Do I need to evolve a Pokémon to its final stage in order for it to mega evolve? or will it mega evolve from the base Pokémon at 50? just bred my first Mega and want to know if I need to give it a fire stone before hand

It will only mega evolve from the final stage.

Only exception is Dunsparce, as its Mega was added before Dudunsparce was released, so mega-able Dunsparce can still evolve into Mega Dunsparce. (Mega-able Dunsparce cannot evolve into Dudunsparce; Mega Dudunsparce does not exist)
