"Wait!" Athena's sword flashed through the air and landed between
Neo/Abyss's hand and Cath's forehead. "How do we know that you're
not going to do anything strange to her mind?"
She flinched slightly. As a scientist, she was fascinated by the
process. As a resistance operative and enemy of the demons, she was
less sure. She hoped she wouldn't regret this.
"My mind is destroyed enough as it is, Athena," Cath said with a
laugh. "Abyss, do I have your word that this is safe and pretty
much harmless?"
What if she reemerged a vegetable? She had a technological back up
of all her memories hidden safely. Because Professor Caerthynna
Elysium had all but written the book on brains. If she had the
paper to actually write a book, of course. But then again, Abyss
had stood against the demons earlier... perhaps there was a reason
why they weren't all dead yet. She closed her eyes, and waited.
She was still nervous.
"I'm not the demon of mind manipulation or
the demon of forgetfulness. I'm the demon of fire and lightning. My
telepathy isn't even strong enough to manipulate one memory, let
alone destroy your mind. This is completely safe."
Athena's sword hung there for a moment longer before returning.
Athena maintained a death grip on her blade, Cath might have
agreed, but she wasn't convinced that this was going to be safe,
not at all. As much as she didn't want to hurt Neo, Abyss deserved
to be cast into his own oblivion.
Her hand trembled as Neo/Abyss reached closer to Cath's forehead.
She was tempted to stop the procedure again, but that would only
make it worse.
Cath let go of all emotion, and waited. She could be patient when
she wanted to be. After all, she had waited a decade to avenge
Professor Kauri, and could wait even longer if she needed to. Her
hands trembled slightly, curled into fists by her sides.
She swallowed. Making brief eye contact with Athena, she raised her
eyebrows, and curled her lip into a smile. She was not used to
smiling. Everything was quiet, and she closed her eyes.
Athena gave a forced smile back. The grip on her sword tightened
even more, until her knuckles turned white and her palms started
sweating. She watched Neo/Abyss's hand get closer and closer...
The scenes flashed through. Blood. Death. Rebirth. The scenes all
showed a battlefield, and a being rising from the piles of dead
bodies. The being staggered up, and the demon left its body. Every
scene showed the same thing, over and over again. 164 times in
total.
Cath looked at him and nodded. She lifted her bow, and notched an
arrow. She would do it right here and now, pulling back the bow
string, aiming right for the perfect artery, a poison for a
painless death-
Some relief flooded through Cath, but she still held the arrow in
position. "Do you know what's happening? What Abyss wants me to
do?" She looked at him intently, and continued in a small voice. "I
don't know if I can... even if it frees you."
Before she could think twice, she let the arrow go, and it buried
itself in Neo's neck. The reaction in the room was instant. Four
pairs of eyes looked at Neo, and then her. Cerberus padded over,
bonking his nose on her leg.
She fell to her knees, watching Neo with concern. He would be dead
in three minutes. Even though she knew Abyss wasn't lying, she was
still terrified.
"Abyss," she said, calling out to the demon. "Are you working with
the Dark Lady? Do you really want us all... dead?" She had to know
why he had helped them.
Nox took Cath's instructions to heart. Once she was certain that
Cath and Athena had everything under control she left the room to
restock her supplies. She really only needed medical supplies, she
was living off of scraps for the longest time. She tries to ignore
the three people. It pained her to leave them behind, but Nox took
comfort in the fact that they would be safe under the careful watch
of Cath's medical bot.
She passes by one of the bathrooms and pauses. Slowly she enters
and lifts down the collar of her shirt to inspect her chest.
Despite feeling like the wound had ripped open yesterday, it
appeared to be perfectly normal today. What had happened?
She shakes her head, deciding that this was something she would
have to think about later.
After restocking she makes her way back to the room, pausing by the
doorway, but not actually entering the room. Based on what she was
hearing, she should give them their space. She rests against the
wall next to the doorway and tries to ignore them, as to not
eavesdrop. It was difficult not to, she didn't trust Abyss, and she
was certain Cath and Athena felt the same. But they could handle
it, although it still made Nox feel better being able to be
close... Just in case.
Athena didn't have time to squeeze her eyes shut before the arrow
buried itself into Neo/Abyss's neck. And now that she had seen, she
couldn't close her eyes or look away. She was frozen in place, the
memories rushing back in a drowning cascade. The blood, the knife,
the crying... And this time, it was all happening to Neo. She knew
that technically, this was saving Neo. Abyss would be gone,
and she would have Neo back. Technically, this was a good
thing. But she just couldn't bring herself to believe it. Her brain
no longer listened to logic, it was running purely on an extreme
hodgepodge of emotions. Anger, guilt, sadness, confusion, worry all
mixing together to form a tornado rampaging in her mind.
Abyss evaporated. That was really the best word for it. One minute
he was there and the next he was gone, a shadowy smoke disappearing
back to the Underlands.
"Neo? Are you there?" I missed you. Come back to us. Please
don't tell me I made the worst decision of my life. But she
could bring herself to say the rest; the words caught in her
throat.
She became intensely aware of the colors of the wall, the hardness
of the ground. All the little things ingraining themselves in her
brain. The guilt, that would forever churn in her stomach.
Neo's fingers twitched imperceptibly.
Athena was ready to pass out. The emotions were still bubbling and
boiling, barely calmed by the fact that Neo was alive. And back.
That didn't seem to have registered in her brain, nothing was
registering in her brain. She was rooted to the spot, staring with
unseeing eyes at the scene playing out in front of her.
