"Oh, who wouldn't crave the life of a performer, of an actor? To present yourself to a sea of people and showcase your brilliance? To shine under the spotlight and flourish! It'd be such an honor to act! I swear on my life I'll become an actor, I swear it."

about the fic

this fic focuses on anderperry and is set in the dead poets society (movie) universe. generally canon compliant with some added scenes, tweaks to the plot and character relationships... some kind of tragedy. no side ships are explored (at least, for the plot now? i may try to do some others. it depends) so... yeah.
enjoy reading. actually, even better if you loathe me for writing it because that means i did good writing angst( ^ω^)

a pat on the back from his father, a shove towards the dorm rooms, and more new people todd anderson hadn't seen in his life. sure, there was some ceremony with banners and bagpipes and an old, distinguished man reciting a speech he'd probably memorized decades ago—yet it never really occurred to todd anderson that this esteemed academy would be where his life would truly begin.
todd was neither the brightest boy or the most talented boy. sure, he could write a sonnet if he was told to, but it would rival neither shakespeare nor baudelaire. perhaps it'd be better than an eigth grader's amateur work, but nothing remarkable. he grew up with expectations on his shoulders that weighed him down as if he were the great atlas, and he could only wish to meet them. the principal told his father that he had "great shoes to fill" because neil's brother once walked these prestigious halls.
originally, todd studied at balincrest; he was quite used to life there, too—he'd established a routine, a schedule that he followed to the very second. was he organized? no, or not quite, but he does—and always has—enjoyed routine. and with such a shift, he simply didn't know where to start with getting used to all of this.
getting used to it was clearly harder than anyone could make it look. somehow, boys were wedged in each nook and cranny giggling to each other. it was a labyrinth of people, each one so absorbed in their own little world they didn't seem to notice todd was trying to inch his way through. todd breathed out his apologies as he shimmied through a crevice of students. the wood beneath him creaked the slightest bit as he dragged him and his belongings through.
farther than him, though, was another boy. he seemed unbothered by the chaos of all these people, pushing yhrough them and making his way without much of a fuss. watching him, it struck todd that perhaps he really was simply fussing over nothing. with how relaxed the boy looked, todd felt his problems shrink in comparison to him.
his hair was straight and brown and well kept—his eyes were radiant. inspiring, even. todd was no writer, but those eyes made him want to put pen to paper and compose a thousand melodies. he had a grin on his lips as he glided through the crowd with ease, hauling over his suitcase; polished brown leather in decent condition, save for the dents and scratches 'round the corners. todd followed behind him. the crowd was thinner were the boy walked, and there, todd could manage. the world felt warm when todd followed behind him, unlike the coldness that swallowed him whole when he scurried in his brother's footsteps. who was he? some scholar?
the boy entered a dorm room, and todd had almost lost him in the crowd. making an effort to retrace both his own and the boy's steps, he followed where there were less people. his footsteps could finally be heard, no longer yelled over by the pointless ramblings of some other students, until...
"neil, study group tonight?"
a voice rang, catching todd's attention, completely snapping him out of his "peace", or what could be considered "peace", in todd's standards, at least.. he looked up to the origin—it was a boy with orangish locks, styled upwards. he had some cocky smirk on his face, and he was leaning on a doorframe, chatting to someone. todd couldn't help it. he turned to look. it was only instinct to be curious.
"oh, and i heard you got the new kid. looks like a stiff!"
the boy froze awkwardly when he spotted todd eyeing him. "...oops," he smiled bashfully, ducking away and walking back into the hall, blending in with the rest of the crowd. todd turned to look inside the room now that the guy was gone, and...
he almost had to hold back a yelp. it was the same boy from earlier, grinning back at him with a smile so bright it'd melt icarus' wax feathers all over again. he tilted his head, eyes thinning as his smile spread across his face.
"hey," he greeted, his voice welcoming as his posture straightened. todd didn't take much notice of the way he pulled his sleeve a bit further up his wrist—or any other movement, on that note—he was too focused staring at both his radiant new roommate and the dorm. "i hear we're roommates. i'm neil—neil perry."
