Sniffing around as well, Rainfeather dropped down when she smelled
the bird. "Good." Rainfeather whispered very softly, inching
forward towards the scent. She resisted the urge to say something,
and waited for Fernpaw to follow.
Very carefully, Fernpaw followed. Each cautious paw step she took
made her heart beat faster. She inched towards the scent, trying so
hard not to make sound. She cringed when she stomped too hard, but
the bird that she now saw hadn't moved. Busily it pecked at a
berry, its ignorance making the bird an easy prey.
Stopping at the edge of the grass, Rainfeather got ready to pounce,
although her tail was still down as if to say she wanted Fernpaw to
pounce the bird. I hope this isn't a mistake.
Fernpaw cringed. Rainfeather's trusting me to do this? She
pondered. Fernpaw focused on the stuck-out feathers of the scrawny
thrush. Her paws slipped, brushing against the grass as she sprung
towards the thrush. Its wings spread out, and it began to take off.
Fernpaw had missed the leap. The thrush began to take off. No.
Not this time. Fernpaw lifted herself on her hindpaws, grabbing
the thrush's wing in her teeth. It tried to pull away. Easily
Fernpaw tugged it to the ground, holding one paw on it's back. It's
wings flapped wildly.
Swiftly, Fernpaw sunk her teeth into the bird's neck and it stopped
wriggling. She carried it, and turned to Rainfeather. Fernpaw put
the thrush down. "Yeah, it was sloppy... But I couldn't afford to
let myself loose the prey," the apprentice meowed apologetically,
and picked the thrush back up.
"It's okay. Prey is scarce. When prey gets more plentiful, we'll
practice more." Rainfeather thought to herself, If the prey even
gets plentiful She didn't want to put neagative thoughts into
the Apprentice's head. "We need as much prey to keep us alive, no
one will really care if it's sloppy. The Kits and Queens need to
live. We need a-new generations." Ceasing talking, Rainfeather
smelled the air again. Nothing. Mouse-brained Starclan, not
giving us any food. I knew they didn't like us.
Fernpaw nodded, resisting the urge to bite out of the thrust she
had caught. The kits and queens need to live. If I eat this one,
I'll break the warrior code and a queen or kit might starve because
of me. She chided herself mentally, and blocked out the urge.
Why must StarClan curse this season and cease the prey?
Fernpaw questioned herself, looking towards her mentor to see if
she had found anything.
Adderstar reluctantly settled down in a bush to wait for the mouse
to come out of the burrow, ready to spring. I'm not going to
lose something as simple as a mouse!
"I'll take the next kill." Rainfeather said, standing up and
sniffing around. If we find another. She said. I don't
want to put bad thoughts into this apprentices head... That's what
makes a good mentor, right? She kept thinking, before having
her left whiskers brush up against a tree. She turned quickly to
see it, realizing it was only a tree. She let out a sigh or relief,
turning back to walk.
Honeyfeather was hunting, not far from Adderstar. She saw movement
in a clump of ferns, and crouched down, getting closer, she
pounced. A squirel was wriggling under her paws. She killed it with
a killing bite, and the scent flowed all over.
If it would make you happy,
I'll give my most precious thing to you.
Even if it turns out we can't meet for
a second time,
A smile will always bloom in my heart.
Goodbye..
Adderstar smelled a squirrel, freshly caught, and felt his mouth
water. As much as it pained him, he kept his post, waiting for the
mouse to give up hiding.
(Accepted, glotilde2. I'm putting Sweetclaw down as Sweetpaw since
she's an apprentice, and I'm not sure if that was a spelling mishap
or something. c:)
Adderstar brightened as a mouse went his way, and he pounced on it
before it could run away. He nipped its neck and it died quickly.
Adderstar sent a quick thank you to his ancestors and dipped his
head towards Honeyfeather. "Can you bring this back to camp,
please?" he mewed.
Adderstar smelled Sweetpaw nearby and turned to look in her
direction, completely forgetting about his mouse. It slipped out of
the burrow and scurried away without the tabby even noticing.
After walking for a bit, Rainfeather smelled a mouse. She froze,
going into the Hunter's Crouch, and inched forward. The mouse was
in a clearing, near it's burrow, so Rainfeather had to be quick. It
looked like it was nibbling on something, so it was mildly
distracted. She went to pounce, but the mouse darted into the hole.
In an attempt to catch it, Rainfeather swiped a paw at the mouse,
snagging it by the tip of the tail. She bit it's neck, and it fell
limp. She picked it up, and went back to Fernpaw.
