The old Tropius tilts his head slightly, watching Finn with a steady, unreadable expression.

“Do I want you to?” he echoed, the question hanging in the air. "Finn, you've been working here since you could hold a mop. You’ve got a good heart. You work hard. But I see it in your eyes—you’re not meant to stay behind a desk or mop floors forever.”

He finally looked up again, and his gaze was gentler this time. “If you feel pulled to something bigger, maybe that means you’re ready. And if you think you can’t do it alone… well, lucky for you, they don’t look like the ‘leave someone behind’ sort.”

-- (this is for me, CafeFlareon, OrangePopplio, and PenScales)---

As Magic scrambled out of her room, the old Tropius behind the front desk calmly sipped from a steaming cup of tea, his heavy fronds rustling faintly with the breeze from an open window. He watched the young adventurers begin to stir and bustle about, and once the hallway was clear, he turned his gaze toward the back room.

“Finn,” he called, his voice low but firm.

The Tropius narrowed his eyes slightly, setting his cup down with a gentle clink. “I notice you seemed particularly intrigued by the adventurers.”

As Mokito's knocks echoed in the hallway, Magic’s groggy voice muffled through the door.

“Mmm… is it already morning?” she murmured, still half-dreaming, tangled in her blankets. She slowly blinked open one eye, squinting at the sunlight peeking through the window, and then froze.

"Oh no! It’s morning??" she exclaimed, her voice sharp as she shot upright in bed, her fur slightly sticking out from where she’d been lying. Her heart skipped a beat. “Augh, I was hoping we’d wake up yesterday afternoon! We ought to get a move on it!”

As they stepped through the grand, polished doors of the Flamehold Hotel, the warm scent of burning wood and sweet spices immediately filled the air. The lobby was alive with a soft golden glow, casting reflections off the rich mahogany furnishings and ornate stone floors.

A young Simisear, dressed smartly in a crisp red-and-gold uniform, bounded over to greet them with a wide, eager smile. With a practiced flourish, he offered to arrange rooms for Bitzer and his companions. However, it quickly became apparent that luxury came at a price—rooms here cost no less than 15 gold pieces per night. Then again, that was to be expected; the Flamehold was among the finest lodgings Emberhold Town had to offer, where travelers sought comfort and prestige under its storied roof.

As the group crested the last hill overlooking Emberhold, the city sprawled before them like a massive forge built into the mountainside, glowing faintly orange beneath the storm-darkened sky. The scent hit them first—thick and unmistakable. Ash, singed metal, and a tinge of oil hung in the air, carried on the wind from the towering smokestacks that crowned the city’s skyline. The rhythmic clanging of hammers on steel echoed faintly even from this distance, underscoring the unending labor of Emberhold's foundries.

The closer they drew, the more alive the city seemed. Gouts of smoke rose in great plumes from the industrial quarter, while orange sparks occasionally burst from the mouths of open furnaces. Streets that cut through the outer districts were lined with iron-braced buildings, windows shuttering shut as citizens hurried to prepare for the coming storm.

A Bronzong rang themselves near one of the outer gates, its tone deep and urgent. “Storm’s coming in fast!” it called to a pair of Machoke hauling crates. “Clear the yard!”

Traders rolled down awnings, market stalls were quickly packed up, and even the more hardened workers began retreating indoors. A Magmar barked orders from a forge entrance, urging a line of workers to get the last shipment of cooled steel under cover.

The sky behind the group churned violently, flashes of lightning splitting the horizon as the clouds swelled and boiled. A cold wind whipped past, tugging at cloaks and coats alike, and carrying with it the first spatter of rain that hissed as it touched the heated stone of Emberhold’s outer streets.

// a fountain? in the middle of a rocky mountainous path?

The wind picked up sharply, tugging at cloaks and fur alike as the first low growl of thunder rolled overhead, closer this time—too close. A few fat raindrops splattered against the ground, already darkening the dust beneath their paws.

A flash of lightning split the sky behind them, followed seconds later by a deafening crack. The storm was nearly on top of them now, the air thick with the scent of ozone and wet earth.

The path ahead snaked through low hills and jagged ridges. Already, the wind howled through the gaps, carrying with it the sharp sting of rain. With every step, the ground grew softer underfoot.

Behind them, the dark mass of storm clouds crept ever closer, swallowing the horizon in shadow. They didn’t have long—not if they wanted to reach Emberhold dry, or reach it at all.

Bolt's group came to a halt along the winding path, the rumble of thunder trailing close behind. The storm was sweeping in fast from the west—right on their heels and following the same eastward road to Emberhold. If they wanted to beat it there, they'd have to move, and fast.

The trail beneath them was mostly packed dirt, but the loose, dry sediment wouldn’t stay that way for long. One good downpour, and it would turn into a treacherous stretch of slick, clinging mud. Every second counted now.

Magic made her way to Room 202 and wasted no time collapsing onto the bed, completely worn out from the long trek to Midspire. As the warm morning light filtered through the window, it gently settled across her scales, lulling her into a deep, well-earned sleep.

Down at the front desk, the old Tropius quietly marked the rooms as occupied, the pages of his ledger rustling softly. He called Fionn over with a low murmur, just to let him know that later, the rooms would need to be cleaned once the travelers checked out.

----------

Meanwhile, Bolt and Bitzer stirred awake to sunlight spilling across their faces, the shadows of the sinister woods long behind them. The route to Emberhold stretched eastward—not as long as the road to Midspire, but rougher and more direct. Ahead lay steeper paths and harsher ground, demanding both caution and grit.

As the trio stepped into The Glimmering Fang, the soft chime of the doorbell stirred an old Tropius from a nap behind the counter. He blinked blearily, adjusting a pair of tiny reading glasses balanced on his snout.

“Welcome to the Glimmering Fang—oh. Magic.” His voice warmed slightly. “Been a while. And... who’s this lot you’ve dragged in?”

Magic gave him a cheerful wave. “We’re looking into the whole map piece mystery,” she said, brushing some dust from her scarf. “But for now, we just need a place to sleep.”

The Tropius hummed thoughtfully, flipping open a thick, leaf-bound ledger and squinting at the pages. “Three rooms?”

“Yes, please,” Magic replied with a grin. “Preferably ones that aren't drafty.”

He snorted, the corners of his mouth twitching upward. “No promises. Place is older than I am. 15 gold, please."

Magic reaches into a little satchel, and gives the Tropius 15 gold, no questions asked, as the Tropius then slides 3 keys across the table with numbers engraved on them, 202, 203, and 204.

"Your rooms are on the second floor, they're pretty close to the stairs so you should find them easily." Tropius then says.

“The thing about berry bread is—it changes depending on where you’re eating it,” Magic explained as they made their way down the winding street toward the inn. “Some places use Rawst and Pecha for that sweet-spicy kick, others go for Oran and Sitrus if they want something heartier.”

She tapped her chin thoughtfully, then added, “The Glimmering Fang? I’m pretty sure they use Mago berries with a hint of Aspear. Gives it this warm, tangy finish that’s kind of addictive.”

“There’s a little inn near the market square—The Glimmering Fang. Clean beds, quiet rooms, and they’ve got this berry bread that’s way better than it has any right to be.”

Magic twirls midair, letting the light catch in her fur. “I always stay there when I pass through. The innkeeper’s a little cranky, but he warms up if you compliment his garden.”

The road to Midspire is cloaked in darkness, the trio skirting the edge of the sinister woods where the trees whisper with every gust of wind. Thankfully, a well-worn path cuts through the gloom—evidence of many travelers who’ve braved this route before.

Beyond the woods, the terrain shifts. A narrow mountain pass winds between the jagged spines of the Mt. Thunder range and the sheer drop of Silent Chasm. It’s a quiet, eerie stretch, where even the wind seems to hush itself.

But then—light.
Little glints of dawn begin to break over the peaks, painting the sky in soft hues of gold and lavender.

Far ahead, silhouetted against the growing light, rises Midspire. A sprawling city of sharp angles and flickering lamps, perched between night and day.

Magic nods, a spark of excitement dancing in her eyes. She bounces lightly onto her tail, letting it lift her into a gentle hover. With a flick of her wrist, she tucks the map away—no need for it on a route she’s traveled more times than she can count.

“I’m ready to roll!”

Magic hums thoughtfully. “Hm. Can’t think of any hard rules—just the usual stuff you probably already know as a guild member.”

She pauses, then adds, “But uh… don’t stare at anyone in Midspire. Or even look too long. Some Pokemon take that as an invitation to throw paws.”

A shrug.

“Best advice? Mind your business, and Midspire’ll mind you back.”

Magic glances at Mokito, a flicker of surprise crossing her face.
“Oh—no need for all that,” she says with a small smile. “I’ve still got coin left from my last job.”

She shifts her bag on her shoulder, then adds, “You’re welcome to tag along, though. We’re heading up to Midspire. You familiar with it?”

There's a brief pause, before she adds

“Wouldn’t blame you if you’re not. Not exactly a hotspot for guild types.”

Magic pulled a slightly crinkled map from her bag and unfolded it, squinting at the landmarks as she hummed thoughtfully.

"Well," she mused aloud, "if we want to figure out why someone would go through the trouble of stealing all the map pieces... maybe we should look into what the treasure is actually rumored to do."

She tapped a paw against the parchment, eyes scanning the northern half.

"We should head to Midspire." She glanced up at Peridot, her expression sharpening with a hint of resolve. "It’s a bit of a hike north, but if we leave now, we’ll get there by dawn—and crash at an inn up there. We can rest up and see if any books or pokemon have got any old records or legends tucked away."
