Truly, living long in isolation would do that to do, he thought to himself crossly as he regained his composure. "Greetings to you, too, sir." He nodded. "It would be my greatest pleasure to pour you a glass. Please excuse me for a moment, Miss Ying." He took a nearby bottle, nearly empty he noted, and poured the gentleman a glass.

Still lingering in the corner, she felt the familiar pangs of nervousness creeping up on her—no, not just a bit nervous—she was very, very nervous. Her gaze flitted around the room, taking in the overwhelming number of people. It felt like too much, far too many faces, voices, and movements all at once. Moments like these made her wish she could speak English fluently, confident and smooth, without second-guessing every word.

Earlier, she had mustered the courage to socialize, steeling herself with rehearsed phrases and imagined conversations. But that resolve hadn’t lasted long. Doubts overtook her, and she retreated into the safety of her corner once more.

After a moment of internal debate, she forced herself to try again. With a deep breath, she stepped out of her little sanctuary, summoning every ounce of courage she had. Almost immediately, she was greeted by a stranger—someone she didn’t recognize.

She gathered the courage to approach the bar, determined to ask for a glass. But as she took a step forward, the thought of having to socialize again made her feel a wave of anxiety. She hesitated, unsure of how to navigate the social atmosphere, and found herself retreating back to the corner where she felt safe.

Socializing was always a challenge for her—an endless cycle of self-doubt and uncertainty. She had no idea how to begin a conversation or what to say once it started. The thought of mingling with strangers made her chest tighten, and so, she stayed where she was, watching the crowd from afar, unsure of how to break the invisible barrier between herself and the rest of the world.

Her pale blue gown flowed gracefully around her as she smoothed its fabric with tentative hands, seeking a moment of composure.

Rather than diving into the crowd, she gravitated toward a secluded corner, preferring the quiet vantage point to observe the lively festivities. The room was alive with vibrant colors, shimmering lights, and the soft hum of laughter mingling with the music. She glanced around, her nerves betraying her earlier resolve.

She had spent hours practicing her English, rehearsing conversations in front of a mirror, determined to engage with the other guests. But now, faced with the reality of it, her carefully prepared words seemed to vanish like smoke. A foreign girl walked through the halls, looking a bit lost. She approached a few people but couldn't speak the language and ended up walking away. Eventually, she stumbled upon a small room filled with books of all kinds, and she was instantly drawn to it. She rummaged quietly through the shelves until she found a book she liked. Sitting down in a nearby armchair, she smoothed out her pale blue gown before immersing herself in the story. she wasn't aware of the time by then only hearing the small chatter of guests and the rustling of pages.
