Mafia: The Cage of Tearful Rain Above Nakanotorishima

Quote from Plot

You've heard of this mysterious island a lot recently. Nakanotorishima. A phantom island, uninhabited yet full of natural resources and the like.

And so, through pure luck, or perhaps divine intervention, you were selected as part of the eight-person exploration crew to traverse the island, and report your findings back. But the journey had been far more perilous than you could ever imagine.

As you neared Nakanotorishima, the surrounding oceans started to shift. At the blink of an eye, the ship, originally on calm ocean waters, shot upwards into what could only be described as a vast expanse of water above the cosmos. And thus it was dubbed the Expanse.

Many anxious days later, the waters of the Expanse seemed to shift, and slowly but surely the sands of the phantom island became visible. A small, rudimentary settlement was quickly constructed on the pristine beach not long after, as you internally breathed a sigh of relief.

The beach was a calming, relaxing sight. Endless stretches of soft, pale sand, plentiful fauna and flora- envision the perfect beach, and you will see. The forest next to the beach was similarly idyllic. Flourishing plants, lush trees, and a diverse ecosystem.

However, on the third day on Nakanotorishima, it began to rain. And a foul, salty rain it was, unending and all. And it appeared that the island was not uninhabited after all, as the apparent ruler of the island, Amehime, descended upon you and your little group and demanded the rain to be stopped.

To be stopped with a murder game, that is. Housing was not even offered, although she did bestow upon some tools. Namely, a guillotine and a stone tablet. Something about there being two Rainmakers among your group, and them needing to die for sealing "her" precious island in a cage of tearful rain.

...The alternative? Be drowned by her divine powers of freshwater. And you would not want that to happen, lest this picturesque island fall into obscurity.

Although, exploration of the island is only hindered by the rain. After all, it wouldn't hurt to explore a little bit, right? And Amehime's sibling Irohahime seems willing to help as well.

How This Roleplay Works:
Show hidden content
Welcome to this Mafia roleplay, which a variant of the classic party game Mafia. In this roleplay, each participating character is secretly assigned a role that is either associated with the town or the mafia. The mafia eliminates one town member per night while masquerading as ordinary citizens during the day.

The roleplay is divided into two parts: night and day. During the night, mafia members secretly plan to murder a town member and devise a devious day-time strategy.

During the day, the entire cast of surviving players debate who among them is aligned with the mafia and votes to execute someone. The game alternates between these two phases until either all of the mafia are eliminated (town wins) or the number of remaining mafia members equals or exceeds the number of remaining town members (mafia wins).

Notable Landmarks:

The Shores of Nakanotorishima

Nakanotorishima is an island, and as such it is surrounded by sand. Soft, smooth sand, untouched for eons. Sand of the most pristine quality, even. You can only marvel at the transcendent beauty of each granule, flawlessly shaped by the ethereal freshwater waves of the Expanse. I'll spare you the details.

Mussels, clams, shells, driftwood, and the like are scattered across the beaches elegantly. Crabs, (freshwater) starfish, and the occasional tortoise or turtle might sometimes be spotted as well, adding to the already picturesque scenery.

Beside the lazy sands of the shores are the Forests, which make up most of Nakanotorishima's landscape.

The Forests of Nakanotorishima

The forests surround the inner parts of Nakanotorishima with dense, lush vegetation. Trees and plants of all sizes thrive in this idyllic paradise, with narrow rays of sun/moonlight shining through the small gaps between leaves illuminating the forest floor.

All sorts of animals and organisms, from squirrels to mushrooms to birds to deer to even larger animals, but there seems to be an unsettling absence of humanlike animals. Many ponds litter the forest as well, inhabited by amphibians such as frogs and toads, along with many more others.

Beyond the forests lies Lake Kurage, a large freshwater lake inhabited by all sorts of aquatic organisms.

Lake Kurage

Lake Kurage is the largest lake on Nakanotorishima, populated by all sorts of aquatic animals. Fish, eels, turtles, crayfish, and even fabled mermaids reside anywhere from the sparkling surface, to the bright upper layer, to even the dark depths of the lake.

From the surface, it is difficult to discern, but on particular nights where the moon is bright, a spire of sorts could be seen shining radiantly from the bottom of the lake. Perhaps it is some remnant of a past mermaid civilization, or perhaps one that is thriving at this very moment.

But all that is not as important as the main point of interest of the lake - jellyfish. Unmeasurable multitudes of all sorts of jellyfish live in the lake, each one reminiscent of a particular flower: peach blossoms, sakura, hydrangea, you name it.

Nakanotorishima Castle

Nakanotorishima Castle is the only non-natural construct on the island, situated on the very center of Lake Kurage, and connected to the forests through a breathtaking bridge constructed with an odd yet smooth, iridescent, and all around magnificent material.

The castle is constructed out of beautiful jewels and the finest clay and stones Nakanotorishima has to offer. However, as the princesses/demigoddesses rarely, if ever, have guests, the insides of the castle are mostly left to speculation.

It is, of course where Amehime and her siblings Irohahime and Mirahime reside.

The Roles:
|| A small notice: ||
Once all 8 character slots are filled, you (or rather, your character) will be assigned a Role from the list below in private Palpad. You may reveal or lie about your role at any time you wish.

If you wish to have a specific role for your character, send me a palpad message and I will consider it. Just don't tell it to anyone or make it obvious. If more than one person wishes to have the same specific role, I will pick one randomly.

Town-aligned Roles

The Civilians are regular people without a notable connection with any deity.

- They have no special ability.

The Miko is a person with a strong connection with Norcrosse, the Legendary Sage of Knowledge.

- With their divine connections, they may inquire about whether or not a specific character is aligned with the mafia for their night action.
- The next day, the name of the character whose alignment were inquired about, along with the names of two other random characters, will be broadcasted for all characters to hear.
- Norcrosse is a fickle sage. It would not bode well for them to inquire more than twice (but you can still try)

The Angel is a holy person deemed worthy after their death by Gracia Archangelica, the Goddess of Purity.

- Their holy prowess permits them to shield a character of their selection from all harm as their night action, preventing them from being killed by anyone for the night.
- The first time they themselves are targeted by a kill, the kill is negated as well.
- Gracia is a benevolent goddess. They may shield a character as many times as they wish without reprocussions.

Mafia-aligned Roles

The Rainmakers are "children"/worshipers of Imber Tempestarii, the Dark Goddess of Disaster. They have been sent, for unknown reasons, to flood Nakanotorishima and everything with it.

- Wielding the dark arts of their "mother"/goddess, they have summoned a cage of tearful rain around Nakanotorishima, trapping everything on the island in it with the intent of flooding.
- The Rainmakers know the identity of each other, and meet together to decide on a person to "liquefy" (kill) as their night action.
- Imber will stop at nothing to achieve her goals. The Rainmakers may liquefy as many times as they wish without reprocussions.

The list of roles are below:
Civilian (4)
Miko (1)
Angel (1)

Rainmaker (2)

"The Rules":
(not to be confused with the Roles)
Show hidden content
1. Hate the characters, not the roleplayers. Be respectful.

2. Each post should have a minimum of 3-4 sentences written in Third-person perspective, unless a valid reason (i.e. asking for character interactions) is provided, or you have proven to be able to write sufficiently when necessary.

3. Cursing at a minimum. Alternatives are allowed. "[Gosh darn] it!" or "[Redacted] it!" are both acceptable.

4. I am the admin. The admin is necessary to the game. Respect my power.

5. Any back door detective work, i.e. separate Palpads and PMs, are not allowed.

6. If/when you die, do not reveal any information you have obtained from your role. I will personally reveal your character's role to everyone. You may spectate and interact with the characters as ghosts if you wish.

7. Any additional characters, such as characters that do not have a role and have no involvement in the strategic part of the roleplay, must be cleared out with me first.

8. Respect the rules.

9. Misfortuna will enforce those rules for me because I am completely incapable of doing so and also i bribed him with gummy bears to do it so yeah

10. If anything is unclear, feel free to message me (or Misfortuna) your questions

11. (heh heh) Have fun :)

If you haven't roleplayed with me before - Show a recent RP post that demonstrates your ability to write 3-4 sentences or 1-2 paragraphs. Alternatively, complete the literacy test provided below: (optional for returning rpers)
Show hidden content
1. Type the following sentence. Capitalization, punctuation, and the accented O (Ō) all count.

2. Next, complete the following sentences.
When they get [there|their|they're], [there|their|they're] going to return [there|their|they're] scarf.
[Your|You're] being ridiculous if you think I'm going to follow [your|you're] gut instinct.

3. Finally, you must answer this fiendishly difficult trivia question: What color was George Washington's favorite black horse?

Final notes:

Everyone will automatically be added into a Palpad groupchat. The Mafia-aligned characters will additionally have a groupchat of their own so I can monitor their decisions, and the roles with an action that may be performed at night will also be added into a chat of their own so they may decide on their night action(s).

Roles will be randomly assigned in a private Palpad message once the roleplay starts.

All general announcements (deaths, exterminations/condemnations, etc.) will be made by me.

There may be delays due to life, timezones, or other causes. Please be patient.

Thanks to JustCath for creating the original Pokeheroes Mafia roleplay

Kojirou Inari

Kojirou eventually decided to stop looking around and stalking random people and not acknowledging Paiyoon's existence. Mastix's been a super boring place ever since it burned down anyway, and there wasn't really anything new.

He took off his invisibility cape and began, "So, ahem, I'm not part of this Ōmagatoki game this time, but I feel the need to point something out." Kojirou paused for a moment.

"The current ratio of Humans to Yōkai is 6:3. The Yōkai are able to kill up to 2 people tonight, due to the Djinn's death wish. Therefore, if a person was to be voted today, they must be aligned with the Yōkai, or the Archangel, in order for town to not lose. That is all I will say."

And with that, Kojirou vanished, presumably to spectate more.
