Didact nodded his thanks to Sliuril and then turned to the others.

"<Sorry about THAT.>" he said to everyone.

"Ow." Jack said once the ringing in his ears had faded. He was faintly aware that Copper had said something quite important and, if asked to do so, he could have repeated the sentences word for word. However, he hadn't got the chance to fully process them and could already feel the headache coming.

"Oh, gods... er... saving your presence, of course, I'm so sorry." the Didact said apologetically. Even he had felt the force with which the last word had been delivered.

"Did anyone else feel that bird fall out of the air?" Jack asked, rubbing his temples.

"Seriously, I- I don't know what-"

"Probably an entirely blameless bird-"

"I just suddenly..."

"...little bird children and a little bird wife, they mate for life as well, don't they-"

"Shameful is what it is." Beowulf interjected, having already charted a course for the mountain and brought the ship around to bear.

"He should be put up in front of the International Bird Court of Justice-"

"There's no such thing." Didact said, somewhat defensively.

"A lot of things have changed, you were asleep for a long time." Jack shot back, enjoying himself before he got back to business.

Didact nodded and did as he was told.

"<Like this?>" he ventured after a while, glancing at Sliuril. However, it was Jack who grunted in approval.

"Quick learner." he said out loud. "You've focused your thoughts. The next step would be to send them only to those you wish to receive them as opposed to... y'know... the world."

"<Oh, is that what I'm doing?>"

"<Yes.>"

Jack mentally heard what was, in essence, a string of curses with a question mark at the end as the Didact's eyes snapped open and he sat upright with a jerk, almost falling out of the chair. Mixed with many other random thoughts, one in particular came through quite strongly.

"<Excuse me, what the->"

"<Mental communication.>" Jack told him directly. "<Considering the fact that you seem to be able to communicate via your mind now that those areas of it have been touched, you'll probably end up getting used to it.>"

There was no direct response from Didact, just a general set of thoughts that were loosely curious, questioning and confused. Already mixed in with that was also a wondering at what this newly discovered skill could be used for. Jack switched back to sending out his thoughts to everyone.

"<Emotionally driven Immortals. Because that's never gone wrong before.>"

Didact shrugged, eyes still closed. "It's nice to be wanted again." he said, electing to ignore the 'mostly'.

Jack muttered something that sounded suspiciously like 'were you so lucky'. He had moved away from his study of the displays and had once again sat down with his back against a wall, one arm draped across a raised knee while the other one tapped a small rhythm out on the floor of the ship.

Didact nodded. "Good luck with that, I suppose." he said, stepping back to the main command console and tapping a few glyphs. Then he sat down on the command seat, put his feet up on the console and leaned back, fingers interlaced behind his head. The orange light in his helmet dimmed slightly as he closed his eyes.

"He's aware we could kill him, right?" Jack whispered.

"He's aware that he would be in no position to do anything about it if you decided to do so." Beowulf hissed back.

"I can hear you." Didact muttered.

(I read the Forerunner Saga way too long ago to answer that with backing from canon.)

Didact hesitated. "Well. Yes?" he said. "Kind of. You are aware that this was re-purposed as a prison ship, right? The connection is weak. But," he shrugged, "if anyone can use it, it should be you guys." he said.

"Yeah, because you're just bad at it." Beowulf interjected.

"Shut up." Didact replied.

"I love this working relationship you two have." Jack said. "It must be really healthy for you to spend all your time in this enclosed space with each other."

Didact walked up the ramp and looked down at at Copper. "Connected to what?" he asked distractedly, walking over to the panels and tapping out a quick message to Beowulf. The ship got ready to lift off, but there wasn't any point in doing so without a destination. Jack had idly wandered over to the panels as well and was looking at the readouts. The Didact was content to let him do so, as long as he didn't attempt to touch anything.

Didact nodded and then stopped when he considered what had been said. Then he went back to nodding. "Okay. Gods digging holes and dragons eating people. Seems about right." With that, he turned around and made his way back to the surface.

Jack emerged outside and began walking towards the Cryptum. Beowulf hesitated for a moment before lowering the ramp to allow him to board. It seemed like the AI would be getting used to these new people on what he resolutely thought of as 'his' ship.

Jack blinked a few times. He got down on his knees and cautiously waved a hand in the hole that had been left behind. "How far...?" he glanced at Sliuril, impressed, and then got back up with a small grunt. "You know what, nevermind. You're right, we should most likely be going. Oh, hey. Yeah, no, we're going that way." he said, striding by Didact who had just arrived at the entrance to the vault. The Forerunner's shoulders visibly slumped.

"Of course you are." he muttered, glancing wearily at the others and then the hole. "Do I want to know?" he asked.

Jack gave a small huff of laughter and leaned forward to look at the liquid more closely. "How about I don't and we all just assume I could get through the barrier with no problem whatsoever. That way, I don't have to make a fool of myself by trying and failing."

Didact nodded. "Er, sure." the Forerunner said, putting the gun across the magnetic holster on his back. After a moment's hesitation, he twisted sideways to squeeze past Faith.

"Ah." Jack nodded. "I see." He stared silently at the Key for a moment. "Well, I certainly wouldn't have expected it to be kept in a box canyon in the middle of nowhere, regardless of the protection the spell provides. I don't suppose it can be moved?" he asked.

Didact nodded to Faith. "Is everything okay down there? There were a lot of energy flares going up."

"For once, I'm right there with you, Glaurug. I don't have the slightest clue what they're talking about." Jack said, looking questioningly from Sliuril to Copper.

The Cryptum landed silently and the Didact ran off, doing a quick sweep while aiming down the sights of his gun. Once he was sure that there was nothing to be seen, he headed inside the base.

Jack looked around Sliuril and Faith, electing not to step into the small space. "And what exactly would that be?" He asked, looking at the bowl.

"Okay, that's it." Didact said as a new energy signature appeared suddenly. "Take us down. I'm going in after them."

The AI wordlessly began the ship's descent.

Jack fired off his spell. With a resounding crash, it ripped through the steel. The dust that had settled in the hallway jumped into the air, all but obscuring his vision. He coughed once and patiently waited for it to clear, already charging up a second spell in case the door needed more persuasion... or if there was something inside that wasn't too friendly.

"Energy spikes." Beowulf said. "Inside the base."

Didact sat up. "Do we recognise the signitures?" He asked. The AI nodded it's avatar's head in affirmative. "Your friends are getting busy down there. Nothing else on sensors though."

Didact hesitated and then decided that if they needed him, they'd contact him.

Jack nodded. "Everyone move back, I guess." He shrugged. With that, he retreated down the hallway and began charging up a vortex spell. So, there was something inside the vault, something Cortana had wanted. He was somewhat wary of opening the vault without knowing what was inside. The wards could be masking something quite dangerous for all he knew. But, the fact was, nothing would ever get done if they kept second-guessing themselves.

"Can we force it?" Jack asked, slipping into the Sight to look at the door better. In the dark, gloomy and misty world around him, the vault door shone like a beacon. There was, indeed, a heavy aura of power on it.

Returning to using his normal sense, he looked down at the footprints. "And what about these? Order boots or what?"

Jack nodded, looking around one last time before walking back down the hallway. "And there's an identical base across the canyon. Maybe the weren't both fully staffed, but that's probably between, say, forty to fifty men. Maybe sixty, who knows?"

They reached the intersection and Jack looked down the middle path with a sigh. "If our friend down in the office... wait no, forgive me, in Faith's stomach is any indication, I don't think we'll have to worry about any interference from them."

He stood silently for a few moments. Then, shaking his head, he began following the path down.

The Didact had slumped against the wall and had closed his eyes, waiting for the others. Beowulf was monitoring the canyon and the AI seemed fond enough of the group down there. He'd alert him. The Forerunner idly played with the idea of sending down a Knight which he could control remotely, but decided against it. Whatever the others were doing could be of a delicate nature and they may not appreciate the interruption. Especially, he thought grimly, seeing as they were technically gods. He shook his head at the idea. It'd take a bit of getting used to.

Jack nodded thoughtfully as Copper replied, letting himself into the room. He gave it one sweeping look, used a quick spell to pull the letter to himself and then walked out.

"How many people would you say would have been posted at a base like this?" He asked idly, glancing down at the name on the letter and then at the other doors in the passageway.

"Ah. Well, I suppose that makes sense." Jack replied, looking around at the doors. "Surely Copper of all people would know of any weaknesses?" He asked, glancing at the Mech while casually opening up one of the doors to peer at the space within.

"Good. Let's go." Jack said, walking down the hallway, flames flickering in his hands. He glanced at the path headed downwards once they reached the intersection and then continued past it. He was sure that they'd be exploring down there shortly enough. They may as well explore the entirety of the surface before they began their descent deeper into the abandoned base.

"It occurs to me that if Cortana isn't here, she may well have already retrieved what she had come for and left." Jack said, making the statement sound more like a question.
