"One, as long as I breathe, the Forerunners maintain the Mantle. Your delusions of power are really quite offensive." Didact growled, making it very clear to himself that this was being said to a being in full control of at least one Guardian. That concept alone made him somewhat uncomfortable. "And two, just putting it out there, she probably knows what she's talking about when talking about gods." the Forerunner said, switching from his Light Rifle to his Suppressor as the Knights drew closer.

"Sliuril, please. I have a headache. A headache. I'd sooner claw my way out of here than suffer a magical migraine." Jack muttered, rubbing his temples. "Honestly, even the Hero of Oakvale was less of a bother than this."

"You know, that's not the first time someone's promised me that." Didact muttered, crushing Knight using his powers before firing off a series of quick shots. "Didn't work out so well back then either." He tried moving back slightly to get to a more defended position, but his size worked against him and any cover he got was partial at best. Quietly blessing the armor that the Knights' shots bounced off, the Forerunner opened fire once more.

Jack scoffed. "'Fine' is our natural state. When aren't we fine?" He looked down at the depths below them. Switching between the Sight and his normal senses didn't make too much of a difference. No way out was presenting itself to him.

Jack nodded his thanks and gently manoeuvred himself onto the dragon. "Perhaps I lack imagination," the demon said eventually, "but getting out of here... you know what, never-mind. You always manage."

Didact saw Glaurug disappear in a blur of orange, saw Copper pull out her guns and decided that that was a good time to open fire. He levelled his Light Rifle at the Knights and started squeezing off shots, the beams landing in tight clusters. He quickly brought down one and moved to another. Almost without thought, he used his powers to pick up two Knights and sent them, flailing aimlessly, into their companions.

The dark, misty world of the Sight exploded with light as the three fired off their spells. They converged perfectly on the reactor. Jack slipped out of the Sight and screwed his eyes shut against the blinding light. The roar of sound washed over him like a wave. He used magic to keep himself anchored in place, knowing that he would have been swept away otherwise. Not that he had much magic left to spare. He could feel the exhaustion creeping in.

The light merely grew brighter.

Didact brought his gun around to bear on the ship that bore down on them. He knew it was a futile gesture, but his training as a Warrior-Servant wouldn't let him handle the situation any other way. Quite suddenly, he stumbled as the entirety of the mountain began shaking once more, with greater intensity.

Jack swore. He didn't have a clue how these things worked, but the reactor seemed as good a place to start as any. He slipped into the Sight and saw it pulsating with energy. The Mask began feeding off it automatically. It would slow it down slightly, but he needed to destroy it permanently. After a moment's hesitation, he gripped the Sword's handle and began drawing energy from the augmentations embedded in it. With that, he began charging up a spell. It wasn't any spell in particular. Just something that would launch all the energy he could put into it at the reactor.

"Maybe, maybe." Didact replied to Glaurug. But the idea sat uncomfortably with him. "How likely is it that your friends are dead? Because if there's a chance they're still down there, we stay here for as long as we can. No, perhaps we can't fight that thing, but we can try to weather it out for a while."

Jack quickly dove into the crack behind Glaurug while Didact quickly moved back from it and drew his gun, tracking the Guardian across the sky.

Jack, seeing that Glaurug was already headed down once more, pushed himself to go as fast as he could without smashing into rocks and quickly closed the gap between himself and the falling figures. He muttered a brief spell to slow the dragon down, so that he could slow down as well and actually grab one of them instead of slam into them at full speed.

"Deactivating?" Didact asked. "That doesn't sound very much like deactivating." the Forerunner frowned, making sure that his Incineration Cannon was slung across his back and his Suppressor and Boltshot were at his belt.

"Let her do her thing." Jack said evenly. But the fact of the matter was that he didn't have a clue what Copper was doing and that made him uncomfortable. He held the Sword a little tighter.

"I should hope so." Jack muttered, turning in a full circle. He felt strangely exposed up here. Without really making a conscious decision, he summoned the Sword to his hands and slipped into the Sight.

Didact shrugged. He had never heard of Mt. Sinai before and had not the slightest clue as to what it might look like expect for, if he extrapolated, big and rocky. If he had really wanted to push the limits of creative thinking, he might have put a bit of snow in his mental picture as well. There also didn't seem to be any obvious sign that there was a world-ending machine beneath the mountain. He briefly wondered what such signs might be, but quickly decided that he'd know them when he saw them.

Didact blinked away the sudden blur in his eyes. He struggled to swallow down the bile rising in his throat. After a moment, he took a deep breath. "Let's not do that again. Ever."

Jack chuckled. "I'll consider it a favour if somebody ports Didact again." he said.

Didact glared daggers at him. "Okay. Console." the Forerunner began looking around.

Didcat nodded, studying the circle that Sliuril had summoned.

"If you must." Jack muttered, looking away from the Didact for the first time since he'd been told to shut up.

"Oh, do as you please." Beowulf grumbled. "Don't mind the AI."

"Yes, no one asked you." Didact snapped back.

"I can work with that compromise. As for the ship... your call. If it'll require much more effort than just porting us without it, leave it be. Beowulf can keep it on course. He can track my armour, so the ship will get to us eventually." Didact said.

"Oh, so you're leaving me here?"

"While it would break my heart to do so, I'm sure we'll be able to struggle on without your illuminating presence." the Forerunner replied.

"I feel betrayed."

"Turn your emotional subroutines off."

"No." the AI huffed stubbornly.

"Yammering?" Didact asked. "Look, we've been cool for..." he glanced at a monitor. "... several hours now, so I'm going to let that slide. But the Mantle of Responsibility is not something that you should talk of so... carelessly. Could wind you up in trouble. So, one last time, let me make this perfectly clear. We will not just let the humans die. If we fail after doing all we can, so be it. But I'm not settling for anything less." the Forerunner said. "But overlooking that, you're telling me that there's no way we're getting there before Cortana?"

"Oh no, not again." Didact muttered.

"So... do we care about that? I mean, like, really care." Jack asked the room at large.

"Yes." Didact growled.

"It's all the same in the end." the demon shot back, spreading his hands in a reasonable gesture. "Only, you haven't gone through what the rest of us have this month."

"Multiple ways of looking at it." Beowulf said. "It's like the age-old philosophical question. If you have three chairs and six kids, what do you do?"

"Build three chairs." Didact replied.

"Kill three kids." Jack said.

"Kill all the kids." Beowulf prompted.

"Kill everyone so that there'll never be any more kids." Didact muttered sarcastically.

Jack pointed at him. "I like that. How about going back in time and killing everyone so that there were never any kids?"

"That's the sort of thing that we Forerunners... discourage."

"Your society really has no sense of adventure does it?" Jack sighed.

"Tell me about it." Beowulf hissed.

"At any rate, I think we're in agreement that we can't let the mortals die and we should-"

"Well, actually-" Jack started.

"Shut up. Sit down." Didact growled.

Jack resumed the fixed smile, this time with his head tilted in a slightly inquisitive fashion.

"We're not going to leave just because we can. You guys, while all... clearly insane, are probably much better at this stuff than me." He said, addressing the others now. "How long do you reckon we have to stop Cortana?"

"What?" Jack and Didact asked, blinking politely. Under the Mask and helmet, they both wore the sort of fixed smile usually adopted by someone who, having been demoted and having the month's pay docked, has just been asked to stay back after work for a few hours.

"Is that not an issue that could have been raised earlier?" Didact asked.

"Not sure." Beowulf hissed. "EMP still sounds scarier to me."

"I see." Didact said, standing up. He walked to a smaller monitor and crossed his armoured arms, watching the readouts scroll past. "And you say that there's one of these under this- err- Mt. Sinai? How would you go about destroying it?" he asked over his shoulder.

Jack, who had been looking at the Didact while he talked, turned to look inquisitively at Copper and Sliuril. "Hitting it repeatedly?" he suggested.

"Is that how they measure destructiveness in your family? Instigation of genocides?" Jack asked.

"I don't imagine you'd have a swear jar." Beowulf offered.

Didact listened with the attentiveness of someone with a vested interest in the matter. "Policing troublesome worlds... how, exactly?" he asked.

"Explain." Didact and Jack echoed.

"Yeah, just assume I have no knowledge on the topic whatsoever." Jack said.

"I understand the words but they're just not coming together to make any sort of sense." Didact said.

"Yeah. I heard the term 'planetwide EMP' and I don't like it." Beowulf said.

Jack rolled his eyes. "You're no fun at all." He stood up with a grunt and crossed his arms across his chest, drawing himself up. That being done, he was still only came up to the Didact's shoulders while the Forerunner was seated. Didact had the courtesy to lower his gaze and shuffle his feet uncomfortably.

"Learn to control your thoughts better." Jack growled. Then he turned to Copper. "What's this about a Guardian, then?"
