"Ah." Jack said, slipping into the Sight. "Interesting." Nothing, save Sliuril, pierced the fog and the darkness.

He shrugged and, because the dark and misty shadowscape streaked with dull outlines shimmering in and out of existence was quite inviting to him at the moment, sat down to stare at the thin silver line which marked the horizon in the Sight, neatly bisecting the darkness.

Didact nodded. "That's good." he sighed and then gave a short, rueful laugh. "So this is that 'luck' they were talking about earlier, huh?" the Forerunner muttered.

Beowulf shrugged. "Make yourself comfortable."

"Oh? Yeah. Yeah, that does make me feel better." Beowulf said, his red eyes glowing brightly under the hood for a second before fading to nothing once more.

Jack simply stopped breathing, since he mostly did it for theatrical effect and being able to fully exploit the usefulness of overly-dramatic sighs. "That's good." he nodded, looking around. "Do you happen to have any idea where we are?" the demon asked. "Only, the colour scheme on this planet?"

He made a quick cutting motion across his neck with a hand.

"It's a no from me."

"Oh. Yay. Do you reckon she'll be any nicer than him?" The AI asked unenthusiastically, marking the Forerunner MIA.

Jack nodded. "Very well." he muttered. Not wasting any time, the demon passed through the portal.

Beowulf dropped the ramp as Faith approached. "Hello again." the AI greeted her somewhat cheerfully, calling up his avatar in the middle of the command space. "Is it wrong of me to assume that you weren't entirely successful on your mission? Only, I can't pick up the Didact's signature anymore and, well, you know how it is. Need to keep the roster up to date and all that. If you could, perhaps, see your way clear to confirming that he's dead...?" he said hopefully.

"That leaves some room for hope, at least." Didact nodded. "Unless... you know... she manages to gather five Guardians." he sighed, throwing his head back against the wall with a loud clang. The following 'ow' was in a very small voice.

Cortana smiled as a slipspace rupture appeared in front of the Guardian. The massive construct drifted into the rupture, closely followed by the Cryptum. As soon as the portal closed, the Knights began disappearing, one by one. Jack got a quick spell off towards Cortana, but by the time it reached where its target had been, the Knight, along with the projection of the AI, was already gone.

"Damn." he muttered.

Didact gave a small huff of laughter. "Perhaps." he muttered.

"I mean... how willing are you to put up with indigestion?" Jack asked, even as Cortana turned to face the new arrivals with a smile and the Cryptum lifted into the air to hover closer to the Guardian.

"We were just getting ready to leave." Cortana said. "I think I have you to thank for rendering the Guardian here useless?"

Didact groaned.

"Do you have any idea how much it pains me that they had me in exile and stasis during the most important war in Forerunner history?" he muttered. "The thought of me sleeping away while my people crumbled..." he lifted his head to rest it against the wall.

"I suppose it is... awkward with the present company but, rightfully, I should have been leading those armies." he said, eyes closed.

"All the same now, isn't it?"

Jack wordlessly got on the dragon, deciding that now was not the time to get into a conversation regarding the limitations of human hosts. He certainly didn't intend to walk, that was for sure.

Didact looked at the Immortal. "Perhaps." he muttered, sinking down against a wall and holding his head.

"Would you be willing to bet the world on it?"

Cortana watched them go and then turned to look pointedly at Didact. The Forerunner frowned and then, with a sigh, holstered the Suppressor. Walking slowly, he followed Copper aboard. Cortana nodded her approval. Didact started at her, resentful, for as long as he could before the ship was sealed shut.

Beowulf quickly rechecked the readouts as the Didact's signature disappeared. Perhaps, he thought wearily, the fool had finally managed to get himself killed. He locked on to another member of the group.

Jack nodded as he slipped in and out of the Soul Sight. "Yes, short on time indeed."

Jack stepped out in the blizzard and was silent for a moment. Then he turned to Sliuril.

"Hey, you... you know people in the Godsphere. Is there someone I could lodge a formal complaint with, because I... I'm just done with this absolute-"

His words were snatched away by the storm.

His shoulders slumped. After a moment, he gave a sigh and palmed one of the augmentations on the hilt of the Sword. Feeling the magic flow through him, he channelled it into warming up a small sphere around the group, largely for Faith's benefit. It was still cold, but it blocked out the worst of the blizzard.

Didact nodded.

"Very good." Cortana said. "Now, I'm afraid that I must insist..." she gestured towards the Cryptum. Didact looked hopelessly at Copper.

"Very well. Thank you." Jack nodded to the construct as he passed, walking purposefully towards the exit.

Didact shuffled uncomfortably. He still had the Suppressor cradled in his arms and he had to remind himself that Cortana was a projection from one of the Knights. Still, it got to him how she was seemingly able to stand there without a worry. The Cryptum hummed slightly, the background noise just about drowning out the whistle of wind. Occasionally, a Knight would click. Very rarely, there would be a few chirps in reply. Other than that, they were still.

"I do so hate to hurry you along-" Cortana began.

For some reason, Didact found her gentle tone and mildly apologetic expression provocative. He took a step forward and found himself in the middle of a ring of guns. Cortana turned to face him. Point made, the Knights lowered their weapons.

"Is he going to be okay?" Didact asked Copper, not taking his eyes off the AI.

"It's probably for the best that you haven't had any interaction with Void-dwellers before." Jack said, following Arctic Heights, one hand on the hilt of the Sword. "Most creatures there are... volatile, to say the least." he muttered. "How long have you been here?"

Cortana watched carefully as Copper knelt over Glaurug. Didact decided to stay back, a good distance from the other two, so a sudden attack wouldn't have all of them caught in the middle. Glancing at the multitude of Knights surrounding them, as well as the looming Guardian, he had to admit that it was a bit of a wasted tactic. Perhaps it was just as well that the AI before him seemed to have no intention of doing any more harm than necessary.

"In charge? Beast?" Jack tilted his head. "Most certainly not. Therefore, I can not reliably offer any assurances that you won't be eaten. Who... what are you?" he asked.

Cortana turned to look at Copper, considering. Eventually, she gave a slight nod. "Of course you may." the AI said gently.

Jack rolled his eyes but decided not to say anything.

"You still don't believe me. You think that I'm insane." Cortana said. Didact judged it best not to reply.

"Already, my message is spreading. And people are responding. You're cynical, I understand that. But I will make this universe a better place. I can show you. You can be there for it. All you need to do is..." she half turned and held out an arm to the Cryptum, its doors open invitingly.

"Please. I'd much rather you did this of your own free will."

(I can... try?)

Jack shrugged and followed her through.

Cortana gave a long-suffering sigh. "Don't you see? The Forerunners never had the Mantle of Responsibility."

"Tread lightly, construct." Didact growled.

"What you wrested from your creators was not the true Mantle, for the Mantle can not be obtained by force." Cortana said gently. She ignored the quiet 'hah' that Didact gave.

"While the Forerunners paraded under the banner of the Bearers of the Mantle, the true Mantle had quietly gone to the next most advanced race, as judged by the Precursors. And now, the time has come for it to change hands once more. For too long has this universe suffered and struggled, uncertain. The Precursors were unable to unite it. The Forerunners failed drastically. I, however, will not."

Had Glaurug not been in such a dangerous position, the Didact would have found his patience running quite thin. As it was, he shrugged. "Tell yourself what you like." he muttered. Cortana gazed at him thoughtfully, a thin smile on her lips, as if tolerating a child.

Didact thought about this and then nodded. "Perhaps that's one way of looking at it. However, consider this. Humanity is weak, but proud. Regardless of what they might be as individuals, as a species they lack discipline and control. To them, there is no enemy too strong to provoke or war too bloody to keep fighting." He scoffed.

"They are flawed, just like the rest of us. Despite this, my point stands. There is no helping them. You might rein them in temporarily, you may think you have done everything for them and then they burst forth, cruel and vicious. As for the limiting of weapons production... the quickest way to get these races to destroy themselves would be to hand them weapons capable of defeating a superior foe. You tell me, do you think that, given the weapons to do so, all the races besides the humans would not have gone to war? It is easy for you to say that the Forerunners have abandoned the Mantle. Perhaps we are not as strong as we were once. Perhaps there are cowards among us who would rather take the easier route and keep to themselves. However, the Forerunners, such as remains of them, will relinquish the Mantle once we believe that there is something that can do better than we did. And, I'm afraid, that you have done nothing to instil confidence in me thus far."

"In that case, you would really expect it to open from the inside." he muttered, glancing back at the glass tube. Then he shrugged and turned back to the wall. "Blow it open?" he suggested.

("Kill me or release me, parasite, but do not waste my time with talk!")

Didact shrugged and nodded. "Fine. Let's talk." The Forerunner sighed.

Jack glanced quizzically back at the elf and then, frowning, walked over to Faith. He gently placed a hand on the wall and slid it around, trying to feel if it gave in any way or if his gauntlets would catch on any crack. "What, is there something... behind this?" Jack asked.

Jack squeezed out of the tunnel into the large room. He immediately stood up and moved to a side, leaving the entrance of the tunnel clear for the other two to come through. "Now what..." he began, standing on tiptoe and arching his back, stretching with a groan, "...have we here?" he asked, relaxing and turning in a full circle, rolling his shoulders the entire time. He turned his attention to the glass tube.

Didact kept his gun raised for a moment longer than was strictly necessary. Then he looked to Glaurug, and, shaking his head, lowered his Suppressor with a sigh.

Separated by several thousand tons of earth and rock, Jack and Didact swore at exactly the same time.

Jack followed it up by a sigh of resignation. "Fine. Let's get this over with." he muttered. He considered saying something along the line of 'ladies first' but an especially painful throb from his head lead him to decide that it really wasn't worth the effort of saying it out loud. With that, the demon pulled himself into the tunnel and began making his way down it.

Didact kept his gun raised and glanced over at the Immortal next to him. "Copper?" he asked, trying to keep his eyes on the Knights, trying to make sure that the didn't get into flanking positions. It occurred to him, however, that he would be in no position to stop them if they tried.

"Thank you." Jack said, slipping off Faith and, floating bent almost double, looked down the tunnel as far as he could. "You know, I'm not claustrophobic because that really isn't an option for someone who always wears a mask, but how sure are we about this?" he asked.

Didact gave a low whistle and knew he'd be a lot less confident in his own ship from now on. Whatever Copper had fired, he needed to get his hands on a supply of it as soon as possible. As it was, he felt that she had successfully driven home the point and resumed firing at the Knights.
