Locke took a second to check the FoF tags. It almost cost him his life. An armoured figure, the Balvorn in disguise, bowled into him, pushing him out of the ready room. The Balvorn followed him through, with several Balvarines behind it. By the time Dutch had managed to kill the Balvarine he was fighting, there was a long, drawn out scream.

Locke was barely conscious as he hit the wall opposite the Ready Room. He could just make out a figure walking through the doorway, several others behind it. "No." he muttered. But he could already hear the whispers inside his head, the intense cold.
Come. Come. Come. Come
The balvarines knew what was going to happen. Another would soon join their ranks. A matter of hours, a matter of days... it didn't matter.
Come. Come. Come
The Balvorn slowly approached the soldier. Locke tried to reach for his weapon, only to discover it wasn't there.
Come. Come.
The Balvolrn towered over Locke now. Where were the others, Locke wondered. Then he remembered. They had a fight of their own. He looked straight up at the eyes of the Balvorn and tried to express his hatred. Surprisingly, the Balvorn seemed to understand. There was something close to pity in the beast's eyes. Locke was sure that was the last thing thousands of other humans had seen, right before they had been turned.
Come.
Locke screamed

Dutch ran through the Ready Room door. He almost fell backwards when he saw what awaited him there. Locke was slumped against the wall, blood surrounding him. There were several crimson footprints, heading away from the soldier. Locke slowly fell over to his right. No wonder his body was off balance.
His left arm was gone, leaving nothing but a bloody hole where his shoulder had been. A small part of the suit surrounding the hole was ripped. This allowed Dutch to see that the area immediately around the wound was a blackish-brown colour, a hard coating, just like the ones that could be found on all Balvarines.

There was a howl of success as the top of the ramp peeled back and the Balvarine's face appeared. By the time Locke and the others had opened fire, the gap had widened enough to allow several of the creatures to crawl in and shoot towards the group at amazing speeds. The Ready Room wasn't particularly long, about 10 meters long. The Balvarines crossed it in less than a second and were immediately attacking with claws and teeth. Dutch swore as his shield fell to fifty percent from a single swipe of the creature's hand. He quickly emptied his clip into it, but it refused to go down. Locus shot a single bullet into it's head. Somehow, it still managed to give a howl and lunge towards Felix, pinning him down, before dying.
Locke had drawn out a shotgun and was using it to good effect. Still, the howls of the dying Balvarines seemed to be drawing in even more from outside. The creatures didn't seem to care that the ship was moving. It simply wasn't a problem for them. They timed their jumps perfectly, launched themselves several kilometres into the air towards the ship and hooked onto it with their claws.
Even worse, the Balvorn could still be anywhere, ready to strike. It may have already sneaked in and shape-shifted into one of the BG Crew after killing them.

Locke skidded into the ready room with Dutch hot at his heels. He noted that the Freelancers, Locus, Felix and the BG Crew were already there. On the other side of the space, he could make out the landing ramp being ripped to shreds by at least twelve pairs of clawed, bestial hands. None of them belonged to a Balvorn. Locke's guess that the massive creature was on top of the ship, either searching for another way in or waiting for the Balvarines to pry open the door.
"Anyone else remembering another battle?" Someone, probably Washington, asked. "The Second Containment Breach." More or less everyone else in the room chorused. "Great. Then we all know how to kill them." Locke said. "And, umm, what about the Balvorn?" Felix asked.
The room lapsed into silence, broken only by the snarls, snaps and howls of the Balvarines. They were unusually well-disciplined. The Balvorn was almost certainly keeping them in line.
"We'll cross that bridge when we get to it." Locke replied. "Riiiiiiiiight..." the others muttered.

Suddenly, the ship trembled. "What the..." Locke muttered to himself. "What's happening?" Dutch appeared out of no where.
"Balvarines." Jack called out. "Eight... no, make that ten, of them on your tail. They're prying open the landing ramp. There might be more incoming. And..." there was a pause as he did something of a double-take. "By the gods... a Balvorn." he said.
Locke swore and instinctively reached for his gun. "Where to?" Dutch asked, taking out his weapon. "The ready bay. It leads to the landing ramp." Locke replied. "Right." Dutch nodded and setoff. He saw the BG Crew and Freelancers heading in the same direction.
Locus smiled to himself. It looked like his 'large group' problem was about to solve itself. Still, he needed to be seen helping in the fight so armed himself, quite deliberately, with a snipe, knowing that it would be unsuitable for the close quarters. If push came to shove, he could whip out his shotgun.

Locke decided that he'd head over to prisoner's room to see Halsey. Chances were that Dutch was also heading there. Locke tried to recall the directions, failed, and pulled up the ship's schematics. After a few moments, he located the room and set a way-point, a digital flare for anybody monitoring his suit's systems. He doubted anyone would be, but didn't mind if they were. Slowly, he started walking. Perhaps it was simply his imagination, but he thought he heard a long, drawn out howl over the ship's engines. He shrugged it off and continued walking.

Outside, Jack's eyes flared as he spotted something in the forest below. Not a major threat... not right now. Chances were that it would stay that way. Hopefully.

Locke walked around, not doing much in particular. He noticed that they were over the Quarantine Zone. He'd been posted there for a while and remembered that a rookie was sent every month. He hacked into the QZ-1 frequency and looked over the logs. Sure enough, the rookie had reported in today, designation 'Eye-5'.
As he had nothing better to do, he opened a private channel to him. "Eye-5?" he asked. There was a pause. "Err... who is this?" the rookie asked. "I used to be posted in the QZ." Locke replied "First day, huh?" Locke asked. "Yes, sir." Eye-5 replied.
"Reported in?"
"Uh-huh."
"Set your sensors?"
"Yep."
"Pulled up your ladder?"
"Sh-"
The was a long pause.
"Done." the rookie said breathlessly. "Careful out there." Locke said. "Heard that there's been some Balvarine sightings in the area."
"Will do."
Locke closed the connection. He turned around to see Locus standing quite alone. "What's up?" Locke asked. "Not much." Locus replied. Locke wondered. The man was an absolute mystery to him, and the files didn't say much. "I was just looking for somewhere to rest." Locus said. "Right. I'll leave you be then." Locke nodded. "Thanks." Locus muttered.

The BG Crew were standing in a circle and talking in hushed voices about what they were going to do when they landed. Most votes were to stick with Kilo Five. The two Freelancers eyed everyone from a corner.

"Free time?" Locke asked. "It's when you aren't fighting for your life." Felix explained. "No, I know... but have we really done everything we needed to?" Locke asked. "For now." Dutch nodded. "Right." Locke muttered.
Locus stood silently, looking at everyone and accessing files wherever they were available, updating databases when he needed to. It was now a fairly large group... perhaps a little too large. Somebody, or a small group of somebodies, needed to have an 'accident'. A plane offered plenty of opportunities, but he guessed the AI, Black Box, would be watching. It would have to wait until they landed. And he couldn't communicate his plans to Felix in any way. He wondered, and decided he might as well get some shut-eye for the rest of the journey.
As for Jack, he hadn't liked the idea of being inside the transport, probably something to do with the fact that it would be a very tight squeeze, so he was flying alongside.

"Wait, did he shoot someone?" Dutch asked. “What have you guys been doing recently?” Locke asked, looking at the BG Crew.

“Well, after saving Chorus, we decided that we had earned some time off.” Washington said. “We deserved some R and R.” Tucker nodded. “Even Carolina agreed. Oh, and Church is dead in this part of the story.”
“So, President Kimball built us the most awesome new bases on an abandoned yet habitable moon.” Simmons said.
“Except… it wasn’t that abandoned. Turned out that there were some… native life forms.”

Flashback…

Simmons, Grif and Washington were running from something… big. “I don’t want to die as food! The irony!” Grif shouted.

Present Time…

“Though we all debated exactly how ironic that was.” Carolina said. “And then, Caboose went and made friends with the dinosaurs.” Washington said. “Because, of course he did.” Grif muttered.

Flashback…

“Who’s a good boy? Who’s a good boy?” Caboose asked. “CABOOSE, THAT’S NOT A DOG, GET DOWN HERE!” Simmons shouted.

Present Time…

“And then Donut somehow managed to burn down BOTH of the bases!” Simmons shouted. “That sucked.” Grif said. “I’m telling you, it was an honest mistake with my vanilla scented candles!” Donut exclaimed.
“Anyway, we needed money for repairs, so we decided to sell our movie rights for a couple of million.” Carolina said. “Which movie?” Dutch asked. “The Ignored.” Washington replied. “No. Way.” Dutch was slightly awestruck. “That was the best war based comedy made in centuries.”
“Tends to happen when you have Caboose as the main character.” Simmons said.
“So, we were rich. But then we realized that WATER PARKS are waaay cooler than bases. So, then we made the world’s… best… water park!” Tucker exclaimed.
“The hell?” Locke asked.
“But then DONUT-“ Simmons started.
“HOW DONUT, HOW? HOW DO YOU BURN DOWN A WATER PARK?” Grif shouted.
“Hey, it was a mistake! And, come on man, technically, I only really burned down the ‘park’ bit. The water was still there.” Donut said.
“Anyway, Sarge was having a tough time adapting to civilian lifestyle, so he made an evil robot army to march down on the valley we were staying in.” Washington said. “But the robots malfunctioned and attacked the dinosaurs instead.” Carolina said in a very flat voice.

Flashback…

The Blood Gulch Crew, surrounded by flashed and roars, stood on top of a mountain, looking down at the valley below. “I’ve seen a lot of amazing this in my life, but this?” Washington said. There was a long pause as the observed the battle below. “This takes the cake.”

Present Time…

“Anyway, most of our rations were destroyed and Grif decided to eat the local flora. Except, it turned out it was basically like crystal meth on crystal meth.” Simmons said.
“Then, Tucker started up a band.” Carolina said. “He said it would, and I quote here, ‘reel in chicks like fish on a rod’.” Washington sighed. “Kinda worked.” Tucker pointed out.

Flashback…

“How about Red Zeppelin?” Grif asked. “How about no?” Tucker suggested.
“I heard you boys were looking for a singer?”
Tucker and Grif turned around to see Carolina standing there.
“Uh, yeah! Female singers are awesome!” Tucker exclaimed. “Can you sing, though?” Grif asked doubtfully.
“Can I… sing?” Carolina asked in a very ‘challenge accepted voice.

Present Time…

“Carolina sings… so good.” Tucker said sarcastically. “Why, thank you.” Carolina replied sweetly. “And we’re not saying that because she could kill us.” Simmons said. “So… good.” Grif’s voice was strained.
“Oh, and then,” Carolina was near laughter, something rare for her, “Grif convinced Simmons that Game of Thrones actually happened.”

Flashback…

“Get outta here.” Simmons said. “Dude, I’m not kidding.” Grif said.
“That’s c- get out.”
“Seriously, dude.”
“Dude?”
“Dude.”
“Dude.”
“Dude, really.”
“Oh my God, that’s awesome!” Simmons exclaimed.

Present Time…

“Oh, and Sarge found a new enemy to keep him occupied.” Washington said.

Flashback…

“Gentlemen!” Sarge shouted. “For too long have we been oppressed, nay, CRUSHED, under the weight… of ourselves! If we don’t stand up against our mortal for, gravity, then, by God, who will? Saddle up. We’re taking the fight to the enemy!” Sarge shouted, getting in the Warthog and riding off towards the cliffs.
“Are we really gonna let this play out?” Carolina asked. “Ah, why not see where it goes?” Washington asked.

Present Time…

“Of course, that meant that Blue team had one more jeep than the Reds, and that was unacceptable for Sarge.” Simmons said. “We decided we needed to be more organized and voted on a government system.”

Flashback…

“Anarchy.” Grif said. “You can’t vote for anarchy, idiot.” Simmons shot back. “Monarchy! Whoever has turquoise armor and is male!” Tucker exclaimed. “Party partyarchy!” Caboose shouted. “Military dictatorship!” Sarge pumped his shotgun. “Matriarchy.” Carolina deadpanned. “Oh, how about malarkey!” Caboose suggested. “Caboose, that isn’t a government system, it just means meaningless talk and nonsense.” There was a long pause as they allowed this to sink in.

Present Time…

“Malarkey won.” Washington said.
“Caboose managed to get stuck in another dimension.” Carolina said.
“Then, through a craaaaaaaazy sequence of events, we rescued Church and ended up here.” Simmons finished

"I... I don't know if I should be happy or sad." Grif muttered. "Well, obviously sad, you sicko." Tucker said. "Moving past that-" Locke started.
"What, moving past Sarge's death?" Simmons asked. "Well, yeah, don't you Blood Gulch guys die all the time. From what I understand, Donut has died five times, Church has killed by Caboose countless times and even Sarge took a bullet to the head once and came back to life because someone gave him CPR. Let's hope something like that happens again." Dutch said. "Yeah. Anyway, where's Concord holed up these days?" Locke asked.

"Y'know, I just feel like standing up and going 'FOR ALL THOSE WHO DON'T KNOW WHAT THE INFINITY IS...' and then explaining the entire thing." Dutch said. "Yeah, that could be like a t-shirt, like, a picture of the Infinity and text underneath saying, 'It's a not so secret sea submarine, don't ask'." Felix offered. Locke and Locus groaned. Washington and Carolina had fallen silent while the Blood Gulch Crew were discussing something. Suddenly, Simmons turned around. "Hey, where's Sarge?" he asked. "Probably dead." Locke replied.

There was a dumbfounded silence.

"Get outta here." Grif said. "Before he left, Sarge declared war on gravity and drove a Warthog off a cliff to 'take the fight to the enemy'. If he can survive that, he can survive anything." Simmons offered. "I'm not kidding." Locke said. "For all essential purposes, he's dead. They've probably put him in cryo-sleep, maybe they can bring him back, but..." Locke shrugged.

The Blood Gulch Crew turned to Glaurug. "They're playing with us, right?" Church asked.

"Damn, we're moving through SPARTAN projects a bit quick, aren't we?" Locke said, pulling out a holo pad and accessing some files . "Let me get this straight. John is alive, with some other SPARTAN IIs, several ORIONs are alive and there is yet another group in training." Dutch asked. "Meh." Washington said. "Frankly, I find that the Freelancer Project was far more effective that the SPARTAN Project." Carolina said. "Biased opinions." Locke replied. "If I remember correctly, the Meta, who was one of your best Freelancers, was killed by Sarge, a 'worthless simulation trooper'."

Washington looked surprised, even through the helmet. "Oh, and Agent South Dakota was killed by Caboose. As well as Agent Wyoming." Dutch added. "The ORIONs were killed by a dragon and Sliuril." Carolina replied. "And most of the SPARTAN IIs died as a result of poor planning."

"Unforeseen circumstances." Locke corrected.

The Blood Gulch Crew didn't seem to know how to react to this situation. "Wait, so... is that good or bad?" Grif asked Glaurug.

"Mmm-hmm, go ahead." Locke nodded. The fact that Glaurug was asking something like that was worrying. Carolina and Washington had leaned forward, making sure they didn't miss what came next. The Blood Gulch Crew seemed mildly interested. Church, at least, seemed to be listening closely.

"Execute us?" Church asked. He took up a menacing stance that Locke could just make out as a joke. "Buddy," Church stepped towards Glaurug, "You have your guns. You have your blades. You may even have all of Order behind you. But we have something you'll never have..." Church took another jokey/ menacing step forward. "We have Caboose."

Locke grinned and Dutch started laughing and rounded on Glaurug. "Please apply water to the burnt area." he managed to gasp. Locus didn't make any obvious movement but Felix looked around. "Who's this Caboose I've heard so much about?" he asked. "Pray you never have to talk to him." Jack advised.

"Posts?" Church exclaimed. "We're 'posted' in a box canyon. IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE. We don't have anyone or anything to defend, reclaim or fight. Higher-ups just gave us a s**t detail. 'Sit here, do nothing', essentially." he replied. Locke looked at Glaurug. "Let 'em tag along. After all, we could us the extra guns." Then he turned his attention back to the Blood Gulch Crew and counted heads. "Eight..." he muttered. "Caboose?" he asked. "Here." A hand went up. "Damn." Locke muttered. He considered for a second. "Washington and Carolina?" He asked. There was a movement in the centre of the group and the two Freelancers stepped forward. Felix made something of a growling sound in his throat.

Felix raised his hands in surrender, though he did it in a very exaggerated manner, Locus spread his hands to argue, Jack had returned and snarled, but not too threateningly.

And, of course, the Blood Gulch soldiers chose that moment to rush in. The took one look at Kilo Five with their weapons, and the other group with most of their weapons holstered, and made a decision. "Alright, put 'em up!" Church shouted, pointing his gun in the general direction of Kilo Five. The seven other members of the Blood Gulch Crew did the same. "Hey, hang on, they're friendlies!" Locke shouted. The words could've been addressed to absolutely anyone in the room. "Locke?" Church asked. "What're you doing here?"
"Long story."
"Is that the dragon?" another person, Grif asked, pointing at Jack. "He's a dragon. Not THE dragon." Dutch replied.
The rest of BB Crew remained silent, probably talking over their comms. At least they'd lowered their weapons.

Locke nodded at Glaurug. "Consider us patched up, for all it's worth." he muttered. He gestured to Dutch, who followed him onto the ship. Locus glared at Felix for a moment and then followed them. Felix looked at Jack, who huffed smoke. "What's their problem?" Felix asked. Jack shrugged.

Locke, who was still extremely pissed at the dragon and Elf, nodded. "By all means, arrest them." he muttered. Jack looked at the fireteam and blinked. Felix looked at Locus. "Everything is under control. Calm down."
"You are aware that I hate you, right?" Locus asked. "You got the point across... several times." Felix replied. Dutch looked around. "And, err, what about Darkness?" he asked. "I mean, don't see him anywhere... is that a good thing?"

"What is?" Dutch asked. "Sliuril, Faith, the lack of Darkness or this fire-team here?"
"I don't know. All of them." Locus replied.

Locke rolled as he hit the ground and was immediately on his feet, looking for a weapon. No obvious candidates. Dutch was a bit less graceful, but quickly scrambled onto his feet. Locke glanced at the soldiers that had entered and decided that they had no chance if Faith started trying. He did a double take, but before he could confirm what he thought he'd seen, he was on the ground, Felix on top of him. Shots rang through the air, probably from Locus towards Faith. "Let's go." Felix said urgently. Locke ignore him and tried to push him off.

Locus narrowed his eyes. Another group had entered the mountain. This was getting too hot. Time to bail. Darkness could be dealt with some other time and he wasn't even his primary objective. Then he saw Locke struggling against Felix. There was no time for that. "Subdue him." Locus growled into his com to Felix. "Do the same with the other if necessary. We're moving out."

Jack wasn't entirely sure what to do. He'd managed to momentarily satisfy the Soul Mask by draining the remaining Demonspawn. But it was calling out for more. And there weren't too many others in the cavern. The ORIONs, on the menu, Locus and Felix, on the menu, another group of soldiers, on the menu. He doubted the Soul Mask would be able to drain Faith or Sliuril quickly enough.
