“Midnight?” Locke raised an eyebrow. “Wow. Nature is so f**king clichèd.” he muttered. He looked at Sliuril. “Please, lead on.” he gestured in the general direction they’d been going in before being ambushed.
Dutch made to scratch his head, but stopped when his hand hit the helmet. “I’d love some reinforcements, but I swear there was a reason we only had five of us here.” he muttered to himself. “You do realize we don’t have an extraction plan, right? And no way to contact the ship.”
“We have dragons. And, anyway, we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.” Locke replied.
Jack huffed impatiently. Why did humans spend so long on this idle chit-chat, especially when, in a situation such as this, time was in limited supply?

"Our ship got jumped by Balvarines as well. It was a small mercy we had almost twenty-ish people on board at the time. We managed to repel the attack, but me and that guy, Glaurug, got bitten." Locke
replied, pointing. "And Sliuril, the elf trapped in the thing, told us that there''s some Temple in this AO that might save us... so yeah. Am I missing anything?"
"That's about it." Dutch replied.
Jack and his Mage Minions released a barrage of magic on the Protector. There wasn't a lot left to see once the dust cleared.

Locke looked at Glaurug and decided that it was his head. Faith already seemed to have picked another target and Jack and his Minions were already advancing on the third. He'd let them get to it. He turned to Soren. "Who survived the crash landing? And is there anything salvageable on the corvette?" he asked, while holstering Sliuril's pistol and drawing a standard issue one.
Dutch kept his assault rifle trained on the Protectors, ready to open fire if needed. Right now, the last thing he wanted to do was underestimate the threat presented by the Forerunner technology.

“The...err… Balvarines, do you think the turrets will target them?” Locke asked. Dutch didn’t have an answer, but suspected that it was ‘no’. Instead, he asked a question of his own. “Shouldn’t we radio for an airstrike or something? Or, at the very least, call in some backup?” Jack huffed and decided that his magic wasn’t having enough effect. He copied Faith and pounced onto the turret he had been targeting. At the same time, he summoned five Minions, all of them mages, to keep the fire on the other turrets.

"PLEASE. F**KING. OPEN." Locke shouted. By now the rock had been chipped away to about eye level. "Move!" he yelled. Locke ran right while Dutch and Naomi went left. Jack saw Faith lunge at one of the turrets and refocused his efforts on the others. Locke dived into cover behind a sturdy looking oak. He took out Sliuril's gun, popped out of cover, took careful aim at one of the turrets and started firing, praying that it would destroy the turret... hell, even moderate damage would be nice at the moment. Dutch and Naomi had, during this time, found another rock to take cover behind, but not one big enough for them both. Dutch prepared himself for another dash to another rock. "Stay in cover!" Locke shouted. "That's all good, but there isn't gonna be any left in 30 seconds... unless you want me to dig a hole." Dutch snapped back.
"We only need to survive another few minutes!"
"WITH WHAT, HAPPY THOUGHTS!?"
Locke wasn't sure what was going to happen in a few minutes, but he had a feeling that the problem would be solved soon.

"No, you see, when you notice a bunch of soldiers pinned down, you don't join them!" Dutch shouted, while Locke and Naomi moved behind boulders. "Dutch, shut up." Locke said. He checked the newcomer's rank. He was an NCO, which was enough for Locke. "Anything to report?" Locke asked. Then he realised who it was. "The hell?" he asked, but was soon distracted by the turrets.
Jack looked around, found nothing interesting to note in the newcomer and got back to throwing everything he had at the turrets. The effort wasn't affecting him: the Soul Mask was bearing the burden. "Where are the Knights of Blades when you need them? You would've thought the King and Queen would have noticed by now." he muttered, more to himself than anyone else. In fact, any member of The Court would be welcome right now... other than Death, of course.

Locke muttered something foul under his breath as bullets hit his shields, quickly dropping them to zero. He stepped back behind Faith's wing and glanced over at Naomi and, beyond her, Dutch. "So... how are things with you guys?" he yelled. "Man, we have some bad luck." Dutch said, ducking back behind the rock. "Maybe Flynn had the right idea, perhaps I should start paying attention to my karmic wheel."
Locke could tell that Naomi had raised an eyebrow.
Jack was firing every spell he could at the turrets, from basic fireballs to alarmingly strong vortex spells. Nothing seemed to be having any effect. "Where's a Spartan Laser when you need one?" Locke asked. In fact, the incredibly powerful, shoulder-mounted beam-based weapon was something only augmented soldiers in full armour could wield, hence the name. That didn't matter. There wasn't one present. At this point, he elected to stop firing in the hope of conserving ammo.

"Told you it was a trap." Locke growled. Dutch, who had dived into cover behind a rock, noticed that. He had actually growled. Perhaps he was being paranoid, but it sounded very Balvarine-ish. Jack roared and let loose a steady stream of fire at the turrets. "That technology... Forerunner." Dutch concluded. "Yeah, no kidding. Here, please pull back the slide on this." Locke said, passing a Pistol to Naomi. She quickly did as Locke had requested and handed the weapon back. With that, Locke popped out from behind Faith's wing and started firing his weapon. Again, perhaps Dutch was simply being paranoid, but it seemed unusually... reckless.
"Y'know, Sliuril did say 'run'." Dutch pointed out. "Yeah, you go ahead." Locke shouted back, reaching for another pistol. Dutch took one look at the air beyond the rock, through which hundreds of bullets were flying, and decided to stay where he was. Suddenly, an idea struck him. "You still have your EMP emitter?" he asked. "I don't think it will work." Locke replied. "Worth a shot." Dutch primed a grenade and threw it over the rock.

"Ah... hello. You must be Mr. Locus." Caboose said. "It's nice to meet you. I was just wandering around the ship looking for something shiny to touch."
Locus made no reply.
Caboose stood there for a while.
"Well, I guess the shiny stuff is through here." he said, moving on in a direction Locus knew perfectly well was towards the engineering bay. Still, he made to attempt to stop him, just kept on working on his camo unit.
A few minutes later, someone tapped him on the shoulder. Locus turned around to see Agent Carolina standing there. He quickly turned off the sound filters in his armour.
"-pare an extra clip?" was all he heard as sound returned to the world. It took Locus a second to figure out that Carolina was asking for ammo. He quickly passed over a few clips for the sub-machine gun Carolina preferred to use. "Oh, and if you see Caboose, tell me, okay? The kid has a habit of disappearing." Carolina nodded. "Right." Locus said.
With that, he turned around, set the sound filter to 'on' and resumed his work.

"Trap. I vote trap. Anyone else think trap?" Locke asked. Dutch shrugged. "I dunno. Might be. Might not."
"Thanks. Real helpful."
Jack sniffed carefully and his eyes flared. He stretched his arm forward. Locke only just managed to see the Soul Mask in his claw. Suddenly, a three or four blue-ish wisps streamed into it. "There were a few Balvarines." Jack said. "Obviously dead now. Other than that... there might be better hidden things."

Locus removed his Camo Unit and got to work. He was upgrading it so that it masked his thermal signature, muffled his footsteps and, most importantly, hid his from magic. He was also adding a resonator, so if, even through all these, something could detect him, it would appear that there were tens of invisible soldiers in the immediate area, all of them with the same shielding and armour-specs. It would take a while.
"What you doing?" Felix asked. "Why do you insist on talking to me?" Locus growled.
"Well, I tried talking to the others. Once I got to Caboose, I kinda gave up. On life." Felix muttered.

"Right here, I've... oh- oh, sh-" Dutch stammered, reaching for his side and finding that the pistol wasn't clipped there. "Sorry 'bout that." Felix said quickly, holding up the pistol. "I've always found stuff with runes so bloody interesting. I was just wondering." he said. "About what, the re-sale value?" Locus challenged. "Nah, about what sort of runes they were." Felix replied, handing the pistol to Locke, who accepted it.
Dutch was half-angry, half-impressed. Felix had managed to remove the pistol from him without anybody noticing. That being said, he was also pretty pissed because, for a second, he had been sure that Sliuril was about to smash his face in for losing the weapon.
Locke made sure that each of the pistols, especially Sliuril's, had interfaced with his HUD. He'd be relying on the Heads Up Display for aiming, because his balance was way off right now. Dutch was filling him in on the plan.

Washington raised his gun as the bushes rustled. "Hi!" Caboose exclaimed. stepping out of the shrubbery. "The hell? Caboose? Weren't you with Sarge?"
"Yeah, I was in a helicopter and the view was nice, so I was leaning against the door and suddenly it opened and I fell out and, you know, I hit the ground and stuff but I landed on my head, which is the part most used to it, so that was fine."
Washington was trying to get him to slow down, but the blue soldier ploughed on.
"And I was in a weird forest with lots of mean puppies that tried to eat me, but then they started jumping and I didn't want to be left alone but I couldn't jump that high so I grabbed one of them and it took me to a ship with lots of mean puppies and you guys were fighting them and I didn't want to interrupt so I stood there quietly. Then one of the puppies jumped on Agent Carolina and she fell into me and we fell out of the plane. She landed on top of the puppy and I landed on top of her and she was sleeping and I didn't want to disturb her so I stayed there and then she woke up and pushed me off and then we started walking and here we are."
Carolina emerged from the bush and seemed overjoyed to see Washington. "You will not believe how hard it is to spend ten minutes with him." she groaned, hugging Washington. "Okay, back up." Wash said.

"I'm gonna assume that people with any measure of access are less likely to die than the people who don't have access." Dutch muttered. Locus 'hmph'd. Felix looked around. "So... isn't this the bit where you guys," he gestured at the people who were going, "march out the ruined landing ramp spraying bullets, magic and fire?"
"Actually, it's fairly clear out here. There were only a few Balvarines in the surrounding area. Needless to say, the Soul Mask enjoyed devouring them." Jack, who seemed to have landed alongside the ship, reported.
Locke, meanwhile, was no longer unconscious and was struggling to his feet. "That sucked." he observed. "That is correct." Locus said. "You okay?" Dutch asked. Locke did a quick self assessment on his HUD and was slightly confused to find that the sensors in the armour that surrounded his left arm were non-responsive. He looked over and quickly looked away. "Right. My arm's gone."
Dutch waited for the inevitable freaking out. It didn't come.
"Load a couple of pistols and give them to me." Locke told Church. The soldier quickly got to the task. Locke looked at the others and noted that Glaurug was also injured. He turned to Sliuril. "Should I assume you've already come up with a convoluted plan to save us that's just as likely to get us killed?" he asked as Church tried to hand him ten fully loaded pistols at the same time. He took them one-by-one and clipped them onto his armour. "Why so many?" Church asked.
Locke looked at him sternly and the soldier seemed to shrink away. "I'm not gonna be reloading with one hand."
"How do you even know you need to fire at something?" Dutch asked.
"Please. I'm Jameson Locke. I always need to fire at something."

“Great. Please remember that us mere mortals don’t know where it is and, hence, can’t judge where the grounds begin and end.” Dutch muttered.
“That’s not the point.” Locus said. Dutch turned to him. “The point is that, no matter what we do, you’re going to have to fight through at least ten kilometres of Balvarines.”
There was a pause.
“Damn, I’m glad most of us are staying here.” Church offered helpfully.

"Okay." Dutch nodded. Jack, who had been listening from outside the ship, said nothing. It seemed like a plan. A plan likely to get them all killed, but a plan all the same.
Church didn't seem to have much to say on the matter, and he had tactical command over the BG Crew. Felix was fine with not walking into the Balvarine Temple, though he didn't admit it. Locus merely huffed.
"So... where do we land?" Dutch asked. The Balvarines were still outside the Ready Room door, but seemed to have given up trying to get in. With Sliuril here, they probably wouldn't be a problem.

Dutch wondered if Locke wouldn't rather bleed out than accept help from Sliuril. He decided that once Locke woke up, he'd tell him what had happened and let him punch whoever he wanted to punch. Until then...
"Fine." Dutch muttered, getting up. "Err... okay, are we going to have any part to play in this whole 'get-the-dying-soldiers-into-the-heavily-guarded-place-that's-their-only-hope-of-survival' scenario?" Church asked, gesturing to the BG Crew.
Locus wondered. He'd never heard of such a Temple before, and his search had turned up empty. "This Temple. Has it got a name?" he asked. He sifted through all the stories he knew about Balvarines in his mind. "Balvarine Order..." he muttered absentmindedly, though he doubted that this Temple was related to it.

Dutch whipped around to face the door, gun at eye level. Upon seeing Sliuril, Faith and Phillips, he decided that the assault rifle could stay there. “Oh, it’s you guys again!” Felix exclaimed. “Last time I saw you,” he said, gesturing at Faith, “you were in collaboration with HER,” he gestured at Sliuril, “trying to kill US.” He gestured at more or less everyone else in the room. “Shut up.” Locus advised. Deciding that his gun wasn’t going to make a difference, Dutch went back to attending Locke. He was feverishly patching up the hole where his arm had been. The bandages were already soaked with blood and more kept coming. As for Locke, he was drifting in and out of consciousness. Dutch could tell that he was going into shock because of blood loss. “This Temple in the QZ… can it be approached from air?” Dutch asked Glaurug.

Washington stood up, breathless. He’d landed on top of the Balvarine, almost crushing it. Still, the creature had insisted on putting up a fight. He checked his location in relation with the other FoF tags. Then he checked again. Upon checking a third time, he was forced to conclude that he was screwed. He was right in the middle of the QZ. Still, Carolina seemed to have been knocked off the ship as well, as her FoF tag put her only a few miles away.

"What Temple?" Dutch asked immediately, turning to Glaurug. Meanwhile Jack was flying behind the ruined landing ramp. There were around twenty Balvarines tearing at the door that lead to the Ready Room. He was tempted to launch a fireball, but reminded himself that it would probably destroy the ship. Locus stood to a side, quietly pleased with how things had gone. Both Freelancers were off the ship, Locke was out of the fight and it was possible that quite a few others would soon be turned.
"By my readings, there're around fifteen Balvarines up and down the ship." Felix said. "They seem to be travelling in groups of three."
"We should resupply and start hunting them down." Locus said, grabbing a handful of clips of ammo from a crate.

Three Balvarines chose that moment to round the corner in front of Phillips. They all saw Faith and him at the same time. The one at the front let out a howl and ran straight at the two.

Dutch wasn't sure what to do. How long would it take for Locke to turn? Was it safe to move him? Was there any way to slow down the infection? He only knew one thing. There was no known cure, not amongst Order at least... but perhaps Chaos had one. Already, he was working on a last ditch attempt in his head. Behind him, someone closed the ready room door. "Sealed." Locus said. "Stay alert. Several made it through the door."
The Balvarines on the other side of the door were already working on tearing it down.

"Damn it, fall back!" Church shouted. The entire BG Crew started heading for the Ready Room door, spewing bullets all the way. Locus and Felix were close behind. The ship was going to be overrun. Already, there were several Balvarines loose up and down the length of the craft.

Washingtom bought down another Balvarine. But the problem was, Dutch had been unknowingly covering Wash's back. Now, Dutch was no where to be seen, a Balvarine slammed into Washington. The two of them tumbled out of the open landing ramp. "Damn it!" Locus shouted, switching to his shotgun. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a Balvarine practically on top of Glaurug, but he was too preoccupied to save him. At least, that'd be what he said later. In fact, he could just turn invisible and quickly kill it before returning to the fight.
