"Look, we can take Locus, Felix, the Freelancers and the Blood Gulch guys. That brings 'humans' up to fifteen-ish. And we can keep top brass happy if Sliuril goes with Naomi to the Infinity. Faith can go with her. Jack... you can do whatever the hell you like." Locke said. "But we should really get back to to the ship to resupply first."
"Think about this." Dutch said. "You basically just told the few people who can clear out a village with a blink to go f**k themselves."
"I know. But I'm just a soldier employed by more or less every sector of the military. If anyone tells me to do anything, I need to find a way to get it done and keep everyone happy. This is our best shot."

"Think it'll work?" Felix asked.
"No idea. I need to get there at least a two days before them, clear out the village and set it up." Locus replied.
"You can do that."
"I should get moving. You tell them I got into an argument, went for a walk and didn't come back."

"Yeah, we need to get out of this sector, that much is for sure. We're still not getting any signals... oh." Locke said. "What?" Dutch asked. "We're getting signals. An incoming message from Whitcomb." he replied. He selected the message and played it. "Gentlemen, we have a situation." Whitcomb started.
"How new." Jack said.
"A village about three days east from you has gone dark. There were five squads stationed there and we haven't heard from them. The last transmission said that there were enemies closing on the village. We need you guys to get there to take stock of everything, clear out the village and act as a funeral detail if necessary. Resupply at your ship at head out. One last thing. I only want humans on this mission. I understand that your little group has several vectors which have no particular affiliation. I don't want them there. Whitcomb out."
The message end.
"That sucks." Dutch said.
"We can discuss this on the road. Let's get moving." Locke looked at Glaurug.

Locke shuffled his feet slightly as the array began to glow. He got the slight feeling that something was slowly crawling up his throat. He brought his hand up to his throat to itch the irritated area, but his armour got in the way. He took off his helmet and coughed into his hand. Slowly, the feeling intensified and he half gagged as he coughed. It seemed to build up into a burning sensation and, the next thing he knew, he was on all fours, the ground in front of him splattered with some sort of black goo. He choked as there was another coughing fit. Slowly, the feeling subsided. "That sucked only slightly less than the potion." he muttered as soon as he felt up to it, slowly standing up.

"Real pretty." Locke muttered, stepping forward into the array. He closed his eyes, bracing himself. It hadn't looked particularly painful but he was pretty sure Glaurug was as good as any of them at disguising pain, so he didn't want to be caught off guard. Dutch wanted to say something about how the entire process seemed better than he expected, but decided against it. He wasn't sure if talking would disrupt the process.

Locke looked around at the room, noting every detail and trying to find possible escape routes or places from where an ambush could be sprung. There wasn't much in terms of cover either. Sure, there were pillars but that was far from ideal as they could only cover one diretion at any given time. "What do you think?" Locke asked Dutch. "Dunno man. It's impressive."
"Is your HelmetCam recording?"
"Yeah."
"Marked the location on a map?"
"Two of them."
"Sent it all to Control?"
"Still no signals."
Locke nodded. "What about from a tactical point of view?" he asked. Dutch gave the room a sweeping look. "We're screwed."
"Mmm-hmm. Know what that means?"
"Err... watch-"
"Watch the exit." Locke nodded, following Glaurug with his eyes as he stepped towards the arrays. Dutch turned around to the way they had entered the room, keeping his back to the others.

"Sliuril, if this ends up being a trap or I end up dying because something doesn't work, your a** is haunted. I swear, once I'm done with all the other things I'll want to do as a ghost, I'm gonna come back and haunt you." Locke declared.
"Right." Jack said, not really listening. He was concentrating on making the transition from dragon to human. After a couple of seconds of concentration, it was complete. He raised the red hood over his grey hair, looked around and picked up the Sword, which suddenly started pulsating with a faint magical aura which lit up slightly in one colour, faded, and then returned in another. It cycled through a fiery orange, a dark red, a bright green, a blackish shade and a silvery sheen. "What's that?" Dutch asked. Jack looked at the Sword. "The augmentations in the hilt. Fire, pain, disintegrating and sharpening. The green is an especially rare one which heals the person that wields the blade. The augmentations are, once again, only activated when the Sword is wielded by the bearer of the Mask." he explained. Dutch nodded. "Cool." he said. Jack 'hmph'ed and glanced at Sliuril to see where she had said the arrays were.

"Ah, Weaver. Yes. I didn't expect him to either. It would've been like a father killing his own child, Weaver had practically raised the child." Jack nodded, eyeing the temple. Locke, meanwhile, had picked up the Sword of Aeons and was examining it.
"It'll be a tight fit." Jack finally decided. "Should I stay outside and keep watch, or temporarily turn back to my humanoid form and come in?" he asked. "Don't touch that." he added to Locke, who immediately put the Sword down. "Maybe I'll lend it to you if you ever become Immortal." Jack said.

Locus fitted the camo unit back in place and activated it. He immediately turned invisible. Raising up his hand and waving it around didn't make any movements his eyes or his armour could perceive. He switched to thermal. Nothing. Perfect. He took a few steps forwards, stomping his shoes against the metal floor. The sound was much quieter than it should have been. He decided that the upgrade had been successful and deactivated the camo unit.
"That's neat." Felix said from behind him. Locus grunted in reply.
"So about your plan, and let me just clarify..." Felix started.
"Outside the ship. The AI is probably listening."
They both quickly exited the ship and moved to a distance.
"You'll die." Felix said simply. "I will not." Locus replied. "Well, I'm going to be there too." Felix argued. "Absolutely not. It is imperative that we don't both blow our cover at the same time." Locus growled. "And how will you isolate them?" Felix challenged. Locus thought for a moment. "Is the jammer still on?"
"They aren't getting any signals." Felix confirmed.
"Turn it off in an hour."
"Why?"
Locus didn't reply.
"Dude, you are just... CRYPTIC, like... ALL THE TIME." Felix exclaimed, throwing his hands in the air and turning back to the ship.

"Refused to fight? Most certainly not. You see, when he entered through the Gate, I had to transfer my own spirit from the Mask to the dragon's body. At first, I only wanted to kill him. But he had the Sword of Aeons. The Sword, the Sword, the Sword. Don't you see? The only way he could kill me was to put my soul back in the Mask and throw it into the lava behind the Gate. But in those few moments, I'd be able to convince him to wear it. Otherwise, the Sword would never be mine and Jack of Blades would never achieve his true strength. So I let him kill the body and take the soul. He was standing there, looking at it, when Scythe ran to him and urged him to throw it into the fire. At the same time, I tried to convince him to wear it. I told him of the power we would share, how everyone on the planet would bow to us." he scoffed and said something which Locke rather thought was "'us'... hah!". "In the end, he succumbed to the power and put on the Mask. In that moment, I took his body over. His armour was shed and replaced by the robes and hood of The Court. Scythe immediately lunged at me. But the Sword and I quickly dispatched that walking corpse. Jack of Blades walked once more. Here, history will go dark. That is because there was no one left to write it. Everywhere, Minions hunted humans. Forests burned and cities fell. My reign lasted for about five hundred years. But the boy's sister... Theresa... he had killed her, be sure of it. But I rather fancy that she was an Immortal. She returned with an army, the remains of the human race. I was ready to take them all on alone if I had to. But the King told me that it was not humanity's time to die. And one does not argue with the King. So I made my demise... convincing and left the world alone for a while." he thought for a moment and then slipped into the Void. A millisecond later, he returned and two weapons clattered onto the ground. One was a sword, intricately carved with the symbol of the Guild on the hilt. The other was a large scythe. "The Sword of Aeons and William's scythe. The Sword is a useful weapon for anyone, though it only attains it's true power when reunited with the Mask. The scythe is only what meets the eye. But make no mistake, it has claimed more lives than you can imagine." he gazed down at the two weapons.

Jack laughed, a sound that sent a shudder down Locke's spine. "No, no. You see, while Forerunner Oracles were immensely powerful, they only knew what the Forerunners knew and what they observed. The Snowspire Oracle was in fact the joint mind of the four Primal Demon Doors. They knew everything, and I mean everything, about the past and present and when they said something about the future, the were always correct. However, the communication glyphs had been lost for centuries and it had fallen into a hibernation of sorts. So, the Hero went to Necropolis to recover them. Necropolis... it was once a very large town, a major trade centre. Then, a mortal mage tried to open a portal to some dimension or another. He was unskilled and the portal collapsed. It left the town unharmed, but it killed every single living thing in it so quickly and suddenly that they didn't even realise they were dead. Anyone who visits it can see the ghosts wandering the streets, going about their business. Soon, the town became overrun with Balvarines and Snow Trolls. Most people refused to enter. Anyway, the Hero fought his way through the Undead hordes and recovered the glyphs. He then returned to Snowspire to consult with the Oracle, which told him about me behind the Bronze gate. Then, he had to set about recovering three souls to open the Gate. Not just any souls either. In Archon's Folly, you will see three large glass spheres, set in a stones with inscriptions on them. They say 'The Champion', 'The Heroine' and 'The Old One'. Now, the benevolent choices would have been, respectively, to claim souls from the Arena dust, get his mother's soul-and I believe she would have happily done it as she was already dead - and harvest the ghost of Nostro, who would have given it up with a fight as his warrior spirit demanded. But I controlled him through the Mask and he became my puppet for a while. I got him to kill Thunder, Briar Rose and the Guildmaster. He harvested their souls using the Mask and with that, the Gate opened. Only Scythe was alive amongst his allies now. He wished him good luck and sent the Hero to his death."

"It was then that Scythe contacted the Guild from Snowspire, telling them that there was a new threat in the Wastes. The Summoners, creatures about five meters tall, made only for death and destruction. They sent the boy, who had become the Guild's champion since my death. He went to Snowspire to meet Scythe. Scythe told him that he must go to the Necropolis to retrieve the communication glyphs so that they could talk to the Snowspire Oracle."

"As the Guild burned, I went to it's oldest part, The Chamber of Fate, and started the ritual to summon the Sword. I had both the boy's mother and sister. He ran into the Chamber. I murdered his mother in front of him, but he obviously attacked before I could kill his sister. In fact, I underestimated him. He managed to kill me, and only my Mask was left behind. He didn't wear it, but carried it with him, a mistake. I immediately started asserting my control through it. I got him to kill his own sister and claim the Sword for himself. At the same time, I started forming my new body, that of the dragon you see before you, behind the Bronze Gate in the Northern Waste."

"Well, Maze soon managed to locate Theresa and trapped her in Hook Coast. Let's fast forward three years, during which not much happens. The boy escapes the prison, with his mother, and starts plotting his revenge. He soon figures out Maze has betrayed him and goes to Hook Coast. After a long, drawn out battle, the details of which I won't bother you with, the boy kills Maze and frees his sister. The Guildmaster contacts him to tell him that I'm activating the Focus Sites. For those of you that don't know what those are, they are areas where magic is especially powerful, marked by massive round rocks. He chases me, but I manage to activate all eight over Albion. Then, I went to the boy's precious Guild."

"Now, incidentally, I was trying to acquire the Sword of Aeons at this time. I needed the Blood of the Archons to do it. If the boy had the blood of William Black, it meant he was an Archon. I already had his mother in Bargate Prison and his sister would soon be in my grasp. And, so, I contacted Maze. I showed him the coming war, showed him which side would win and bent him to my will. He issued a general Quest Card at the Guild, one he knew only the boy would take. It was a fairly straightforward one, if you knew how. He needed someone to open the Demon Door which led to the Old Kingdom. The boy took it immediately and went to Lychfield graveyard. He helped Nostro, the dead Gatekeeper, recover his armour. Nostro opened the gates and the boy fell nicely into the trap. I kept him in Bargate Prison, besides his dear mother. Then I set about finding the sister, Theresa."

Locke watched with interest. "The Guild... does it still exist?"
"Only it's ruins. People with the blood of Heroes still visit them. They are beneath Bowerstone Castle, which has grown a lot since the days of the Guild." Jack said. Locke nodded. "Continue the story."
"The boy, now a man, was sent on several quests, increasingly dangerous. Finally, he was sent to Knothole Glade to rid them of a Balvarine infestation, a task he had unprecedented success in. The leader of Knothole Glade sent a request to the Guild, recommending the Hero for the Arena. The Guildmaster accepted and gave him a Nomination. You humans may not be familiar with how the Arena worked. There were ten rounds, each of ten waves. The first round, for example, was Wasps, each one around a meter tall. Then Hollow Men, then Bandits, then Hobbes, then Earth Trolls, then Stone Trolls, then Balvarines. Then, there were two rounds where two Heroes worked together. If both had survived to this point, the final round would be to fight against each other while fending off against attacking monsters. After every round, you were given an option to take a rest. If you did that, your prize money went to zero. The point was to finish all the rounds without a single rests. I believe I have already mentioned the six heroes who managed to do this.
I hosted the Arena Games that one time when the Hero of Oakvale fought. It was my first appearance in Albion after centuries and the fools mistook that as a good thing. Anyway, the Hero won. A guard led him out through the Hall of Heroes, where there stand ten monuments of the greatest Heroes in Albion, though it was a bit inaccurate as it was only people who trained at the Guild. I believe that it was Maze, Weaver, the Hero of Oakvale, me, Scarlet Robe, Scythe, Twinblades, Briar Rose, Reaver and Captain Arkwright.
The guard said that his fighting style reminded him of one of the Heroes who had fought here long ago, Scarlet Robe. The name meant nothing to the guard. But the boy... you see, Scarlet Robe was his mother. He simply stood in front of the statue, staring. It was there that I met him first. I told him that his mother was still alive and how I would love to reunite them. He asked me how and I said 'simply keep on taking Quests at the Guild. I will drop by eventually.' I also gave him the Victor's Seal, a trophy. I had, however, bugged the Seal and it allowed me to see what he saw, hear what he heard and even affect what ever was happening to him. It was through this that I learnt that this was the boy who had escaped from Oakvale. I also learnt that he was a descendant of William Black, making him the last Old King."

"Deep in the forests of Albion lay the small town of Oakvale, unchanged by time and untouched by the sword. There lived a boy and his family. A boy dreaming of greatness. Of one day being a Hero. Sometimes he imagined himself as a noble knight... or a powerful wizard. And other times, he dreamt he'd be an evil warrior. But in all his dreams of greatness, he could not imagine the power of the destiny that lay before him. His story began on his elder sister's birthday. He had her present and she was playing down in the Barrow Fields. Naturally, he went to her, near the outskirsts of the town. They were about to head home when a single cry the air. The cry of a man panicked, but trying to be brave. One of the town guards. He screamed a single word." Jack paused for effect.
"Bandits." Jack looked around. "Actually... it was quite close to here. Perhaps I could..." Jack's eyes flared.
Locke jumped as the world around him suddenly changed. They were standing in a field, watching a boy hide behind fence and dozens of hooded men with swords ran towards a town. One impaled a man in a blue uniform on his way down the path. The town guards, ten in total, had arranged a barricade in an attempt to create a bottleneck. The guards let in a single girl, presumably the boy's sister, as she ran up the hill. They were promptly cut down and the bandits flooded into the town. The image flickered and suddenly they were back on the path. Locke glanced at Dutch, who nodded to confirm that he had seen the same thing.
"Bandits had come to Oakvale, wielding steel and flames, leaving only death in their path. The boy watched on as his entire life was torn from him. The bandits broke down doors to steal what was the houses and murder the inhabitants. And yet, they could not find what they were looking for. At last, they reached the last house in the town.
The boy's father fought bravely, killing five bandits and wounding several others, but he was a woodcutter, not a warrior. He soon fell. They fell upon upon the house and ripped out the boy's mother and sister. But they could not find the boy I had sent them to find.
Soon, they left.
It was then that the boy came out of his hiding place and ran through the burning town towards his house. When he found his father's body outside, he collapsed and burst into tears. And it was then that the last bandit charged at him. That should have been it. The boy should have died. But by chance, the bandit keeled forward and died, his back burnt. I imagine the boy was rather panicked by what he saw next. After all, Maze was a very imposing figure. He jumped at the boy and teleported to the Guild with him. There, the boy met the Guildmaster, perhaps one of the most magically gifted mortals I had the pleasure of meeting... and killing.
And from then, the Guild became the boy's home. He spent the days in the grounds, practising under Weaver's watchful eye. The long nights were spent in the library, studying. After ten long years, he was ready to become a Hero and go out into the world alone to seek his own destiny."

Jack thought for a moment. "I suppose I can tell you all of these stories if I start from the very start..." he collected his thoughts. "William Black was the first of the Old Kings - the first Hero, if you will. He was the only human to ever venture into the Void. I met him, however briefly. In those moments, I knew that one of his line would be the one to kill the body I had at that time. However, upon going back to this planet, he got sick with a withering disease, one that would destroy him and most other humans beside. But then he did a profoundly stupid thing: he came back to the Void, the source of the disease. He managed to squeeze it from himself into that plane of existance. And so, the Corruption was born.
Black did not manage to remove the disease before it had done most of its job. He was now nothing more than bones and skin, a mummy. In fact, he did wrap himself up in strips of cloth that only reveals his eyes and his mouth. At this point, he adopted the title of 'Scythe' and joined the Guild of Heroes. Went on to become a legend, taking only the most dangerous Quests. He bacame one of the Six Heroes of the Arena, the others being me, the Hero of Oakvale, Thunder, Maze and the Guildmaster, also known as Weaver. But the story of Scythe will continue later. If I want it to make sense, I will now have to switch to the story of the Hero of Oakvale." Jack paused for a moment to gather his thoughts.

"Well... well, well, well. I actually have far too many stories regarding The Wastes. Tell me, would you like to hear the story of the Necropolis? Or of the Snowspire Oracle? Perhaps the one of William Black- better known as Scythe- will appeal to you. Or maybe of the death of the last of the Old Kings? The last one, incidentally, is also the story of how I got the body that I had when I first met you two soldiers. And all of them are in the same year, about eight thousand years ago. And, now that I think about it, they would make a lot more sense if Sliuril and Faith were present at around the same time. Hmm... never thought about that. But seeing as I am to pretend that you've never been there..." he shrugged.
"Necropolis. Sounds cool." Dutch said. "Scythe." Locke voted. "I've heard about him."
Jack looked at the others for the deciding votes.

Locke completed the transaction and nodded, satisfied. "Good. Nice doing business with you." he said. Dutch sighed and checked his mission clock. "Err... anyone got any interesting stories to share?" he asked. Jack started to speak up. "Is this gonna be anything like the 'crashing into the house' story?" Dutch raised an eyebrow.
Jack glared at him.
"You can... continue if you want." Dutch said. Jack seemed to consider the question. "Has anyone here ever been to The Northern Wastes? Snowspire or Necropolis in particular."
Dutch and Locke both shrugged. "Nope. Sounds cheery." Locke said.
