A moment of shocked silence passes between the two before they start laughing. "Take them out. If they won't learn they easy way, then they'll learn the hard way." The smaller one demands. The larger lounges towards the two. Foolishly going after Mare first. He attempts to stab the tazer into her neck to momentarily paralyze her.

The other Peacemaker, the smaller one. Doesn't wait for Meya to reply. Mare had put him on edge, so he was expecting her to fight back with Mare. He tries to tackle her, but falls short, he had miscalculated the distance between them. This had only made him more furious, now he was going to fight for his job and to save his pride. He manages to quickly stand up and race forward. He didn't have a tazer, intead he had a baton, which he raises in the air and was prepared to hit her with.

"I'm glad she likes me." Maci says happily. Feeling much calmer, she takes a seat next to Faith, not wanting to leave right away. "I'm sorry you are here. I feel bad for you and Ariel. Both of you shouldn't be here." She pauses, her gaze sharpens as she shoots daggers at nobody in particular. "The Capitol is truly an evil place."
....
The two Peacekeepers pause by the cafeteria, quickly spotting Meya. "Hey!" The largest one with the squeaky voice barks. "What are you doing out? You know you aren't allowed to roam the halls at free will!"
The second Peacekeeper, who was surprisingly short and thin, takes a step forward. "Leave, now!" He commands. He starts to draw his tazer, flashing it at Meya threateningly.

With Faith's assistant, Maci's worry completely vanishes. She relaxes under Faith's protective demeanor. She finds that Charlie is a good distraction. For a few minutes. She completely forgets about her worries. She gently rocks the newborn in her arms and coos at the child. To her surprise, she finds that Charlie quickly starts to get sleepy, so she hands Charlie back over to Faith. "I guess I'm a natural huh?" She asks light heatedly.

Maci's eyes widen. She has never been asked such a thing before. People steered clear of having her hold their babies. At first she thought it was because they saw her as someone who was too weak to hold a child. Now, in hindsight, she wondered if it was due to her power. She glances down at Charlie and can't help but melt at how small she is. "If that's okay with you." Maci replies nervously. Babies were fragile, she knew that, she couldn't help but feel worried that she'll somehow hurt Charlie.

Maci sighs in relief. "Thank you. That's actually exactly what I needed to hear." Her head truly felt like it was going to explode with all this critical information she was given. But she shouldn't focus on that, at least, not all of it at once. She should look at it piece by piece. Whenever she felt confused, heartbroken, or scared, she would have to remember the things that kept her grounded. She opens her hand, glancing down at the ring. She smiles at it and slips it back onto her finger.
Charlie quickly grabs her attention. She manages to move her hair out of the way just in time, saving her hair from what was probably, a surprisingly strong grip. "Your baby is adorable" Maci comments.

"I would." Maci admits. She strides across the room as calmly as possible and takes a seat Although she only manages to be comfortable for a few seconds before she is standing back up again and pacing around the room. "The Capitol is trying to break me!" She declares as quietly as possible. "Everytime I muster some sort of positivity, it's suddenly taken away from me." She pauses to tear her hands through her hair. Her sudden anxiety is clear on her face. "Everything I thought I knew changed so suddenly... The moment I accept that truth, it changes again! My emotions seem to be displayed on a pendulum. I'm relaxed, then I'm not. Happy, then sad." She clenches her ring, which she didn't even realize she had taken off until now. "I don't know what to do or how to feel about anything anymore!" She reveals. She turns around and looks at Faith questioningly. As if Faith holds the answers to all her unspoken questions.

While awaiting Mare's reply, Maci hears a shrill cry down the hallways. She quietly excuses herself and roams down the hallways towards the sound. Was someone in danger? No, that was a baby... was the baby in danger!? With this random intrusive thought, Maci picks up her pace. She was just about to turn a corner when she is suddenly startled in place by a voice mentioning her name. She presses her back against the wall and holds her breath as if that'll somehow make her invisible.
"...Where is Maci?" The deep voice asks.
"I haven't been able to find her since her private session ended" a new voice, which sounded pathetically squeaky replies.
"She couldn't have gone far" the deeper voice grunts. "Especially since she had managed to evade taking her medicine all day."
"Do you think she-?"
"Impossible. If she learned to reverse the effects of her power, then we're all screwed." The voices were getting close. Too close. It's too late for Maci to flee unless she wants to attract them to her. She'll just have to be prepared to fight... "There's no way she'd find out." The deeper voice assures. "Her uncle was killed for that very reason, we can't have him squeak. If word comes out that she was supposed to be trained to be a Capitol weapon... well, that wouldn't be good."
"What happened to her cousin? I heard he was released and moved far away from her."
"He was, nobody knows what happened of him. Rumor has it that he died. This is a terrible world to be powerless in." Maci holds a hand onto her mouth to muffle her gasp. So that's why her uncle pushed her. That's what happened to them!? She clenches her fists, suddenly, she wants to fight them. The Capitol can't get away with this...
"Maybe she went to get food?" the squeaky voice asks. The two continue talking, but because they are getting further away, Maci can't hear them. Maci is unable to hide her disappointment. She was tempted to race after them, but without the advantage of a surprise attack, it would be foolish to try and fight them. Once again, she was forced to take the defensive. She jumps in surprise to hear the wail again. It came from the room next to her. Worried that the two Peacekeepers will curiously glance in this direction, she leaps into the room, which so happens to be where Faith and the baby are.
"Oh, I'm sorry" she whispers, realizing that Faith was trying to calm the baby. "Um... I can go if you want."
.....
"Hm?" Zahara mumbles. She leans forward, looking just as curious as Lifei. "If it were that easy then what stopped you? Surely you realize that their deaths could potentially save lots of lives?" She pauses. "Hmph, I know I'm a hypocrite for saying that. I only spared the life of that measly trainer because I felt pity for the poor thing."

"Maybe, but the Capitol works in strange ways. I bet their expectations were based upon whenever or not you kept them distracted. They are like children that never grow." She rolls her eyes and plops down on the floor next to them. She accepts the lollipop and smiles mischievously. "I nearly killed an instructor as well. Lucky for the instructor, I have bad aim." She giggles at this. "Hmm-" she hums "we probably should've killed them."

"I'm not good enough yet" Maci tells Mare simply. She turns away from the simulation room and starts punching and kicking a punching bag. She weaves away from the bag whenever it swings her way and kicks and punches it from multiple angles. After a few minutes she catches the bag and pauses to catch her breath. Her skills were getting better, but her strength and endurance weren't that great. She turns to look at Mare, noticing her learning against the pillar. "Is everything alright? Why were you hiding for so long?"
....
Hearing the knock, Zahara opens the door. She looks irritated until she realizes that it was Echo and Lifei who had knocked on her door. "Oh!" She says. "Come on in!" She opens the door wide enough for them to enter. "Well, well. I'm quite surprised you two bested me. I was certain I would get the highest score." The last part was a lie. She was expecting a low score as a punishment for nearly killing that instructor.

She had gotten sicker. So much so that now she was forced to become bedridden. Her skin felt clammy, even though there was a chill in the room from the open window. Her head was pounding; she could barely open her eyes. When she did, she would sometime wince from the blinding lights in the room. Her heart raced for some reason when the lights became too bright. Every breath felt like a struggle, as if she were breathing underwater.
Jaxon sat loyally by her side. They had been together for two years and there was already a promise that they'd be together forever. It was both romantic and childish, built on the falsehood that nothing could go wrong. They got along well, but her constant dance with death sometimes but a damper on the relationship- at least, that's how it felt on her end.
She looked at Jaxon through squinted eyes, smiling at how calm he looked in his sleep. As if he could sense her looking at him, he raises up his head and offers her a kind smile. His eyes were tired, but he was pushing through for her. He walks the few steps from his chair to her bed and holds her hand. She winces when he puts a cold hand on her forehead. "Your fever it's getting worse." He murmured.
"I'm fine" she whispers.
"This shouldn't be fine." He removes his hand from her forehead and grabs her other hand. He leans over the bed to look her in the eyes. "I can help you fight this" he offers.
"How?" Maci asks.
"I can give you my energy. It'll give you the strength you so desperately need to fight this."
"I can't accept something like that, what will happen to you?" Maci asks.
"Nothing" Jaxon lies. "It'll be worth it. I can't stand sitting here and watching you suffer knowing I can help. Maci, I won't do this without your permission but-"
"You can" Maci interrupts. She allows her fear to slip into her words. She knows she can't fight this alone. She was getting weaker by the minute. She could feel death sinking it's cold teeth into her flesh. "I'm scared" she admits. "For the both of us."
"We'll be okay" Jaxon promises. "Love always wins in the end, right?"

Maci's eyes snap open. She holds a hand onto her heart, flinching at the ache that filled her chest. She was confused, hurt, and appreciated all at once. She was never sick, she was dying, she knows that now, and it was her fault. She was nothing but a parasite to Jaxon, always was, but she did this to herself. Would he hate her if he found the truth? Maci doubts that. He loved her too much to care, just like how she wouldn't care if she were in his shoes. She loved him just as much. He had given her everything, she wanted to be alive long enough to show him that she was worth the risk. Which meant that she would have to get stronger.
She marches back to the training room and activates the simulations. She vows to practice every day and night. She would not be the push over that the Capitol expected her to be! She would show them that her five was a serious underestimation.

Later that night, the scores are finally shown to the tributes. Every room has a conveniently placed TV, which only turns on for these special occasions- seemingly for the torture of the tributes. The Capitol symbol flashes across the screen and the loud Capitol anthem bursts through the speakers, automatically grabbing anybody's attention. After a long speech that drags on and will go unsaid in this paragraph, the scores are finally shown. They range from 0-12, 0 being the worst and 12 being the best. The name and the photo of each tribute is shown first, then the score is shown on the bottom of the screen in a flaming number.

Zahara grins at her score, her eyes had the same wild gleam that was shown during her private session. She was fine with her score, even though it wasn't one of the highest scores. It was better to be underestimated anyway. Pride was a tricky emotion. Both a negative and a positive, depending on the intentions. She could make use out of their pride....
...
Maci's smile fades away when she sees her score. It wasn't the worst, but it wasn't the best. She had worked so hard! She was improving so much! Only for a five? Don't cry, don't cry, it's childish to cry over this, it's not that bad... She clenches her teeth and closes her eyes, blocking the tears from escaping. She takes a shaky deep breath and walks out onto her balcony again. It was muscle memory now, finding the balcony. She spent many nights sitting there, trying to think of home. More importantly, trying to find Jaxon's energy, which seemed faint now. How was she going to get back to him? If her best was a five then she stood no chance against everyone. "Please" she whispers. "Let me wake up from this nightmare." She sits down on the ground and rests her head against the railing. "Please" she whispers again.

Maci smiles. "I'm sorry, I'm also am not making the situation any better. I understand that it may not be-" she hesitates, "possible." She sighs. "You don't need to hide your scars. They are nothing to be ashamed of. All they are is proof that you survived through Hell, wear them proudly."
.....
"Zahara Payne" a friendly voice calls on the intercom. Zahara stands up, giggling to herself as she skips into the room.

"Start whenever you a ready" the Gamemakers calls as they watch her enter the room. Zahara goes silent. She glances at all the trainers, deciding which one she wants to fight.

"I want to fight you!" She shouts, pointing her lollipop at the largest and most muscular one. They all exchange glances, he shrugs and walks onto the mat. Zahara takes a few seconds to stretch and to throw her lollipop to the side. She hopes up and down excitedly. "I'm ready! I won't hurt you too badly! I pinky promise!" A bell rings and the two start fighting. Zahara manages to dodge a few of his punches, but then he lands a solid one at her nose. She backs up, holding her nose and gasping in mock surprise. The Trainer jumps towards her; she doesn't even try to defend herself, she allows him to beat her up. The Gamemakers look at one another with a confused look. Was this all Zahara had? Why she was allowing herself to lose this badly?

"That's enough!" One shouts. All eyes land on Zahara, who starts giggling like a madwoman. The trainer steps forward and extends a hand to Zahara, who was crouched down and covering her bloodied face. Blood pools between her fingers and drips onto the mat. She hides her eyes under one hand, and with her other hand, she dips a finger in her own pool of blood and draws a smiley face on the trainer's face. Drawing a bloody line over each eye and a smile on his chin. He backs away in disgust, wiping his arm over his face in an attempt to clean it; all it does is smear the blood all over his face. When he drops his arm he is suddenly smiling. Zahara drops her hand, exposing her eyes, which are now a solid black. Her power has been activated.

"Now, you're mine!" Zahara hisses. She stands up and stares at him with an intense gaze. She forces him to start laughing, he laughs so hard that he falls on the ground and can't get up. She skips over to the weapons stand and analyzes each weapon carefully. She grabs a sledgehammer and returns to him.

"Stop!" A Peacemaker commands. Zahara raises the sledgehammer into the air and brings it back down. The Peacemakers, Gamemakers, and trainers all shut their eyes, not wanting to witness the bloody sight. There is a sudden crack followed by a scream. The trainer gasps in horror, momentarily escaping her grip. When everyone opens their eyes, they see that the sledgehammer has just barley missed his head by a few inches. The floor is slightly damaged in the spot she dropped it. "Oopsie daisy." She says with a insane fit of laughter. "I missed!" She says with a pout. She glares at him, which causes him to start laughing again.

Suddenly, she pounces on him and starts punching him. He is laughing the whole time, his face slowly becoming unrecognizable with every hit. Peacekeepers try to drag her off of him, but she bites at their arms and jumps back on the trainer, continuing to punch him. It takes three Peacemakers to hold her down and an additional one to shoot her with a few tranquilizers to finally get her to stop attacking him. They drag her out of the room. The further away Zahara gets, the more the trainer's laughter starts to turn into choked sobs.
.....
"Maci Lam." Taking a deep breath, Maci stands up and strolls into the room. Her training had gone well. She was starting to feel normal again. Lighter on her feet, stronger. Her mind felt sharper too. She had been meditating every night in the hopes of finding her powers.
She never did, but somehow, it made her feel calmer, warmer. It filled the emptiness in her heart. She was quickly discovering that she didn't really need her medicine anymore.
She fixes the Gamemakers with a hardened look, then turns to the instructors, who were still shocked by the last showing. Even for Zahara, her showing was still crazy.
-A bit too crazy, even for her.
Maci and the tall instructor have a rematch. This time, Maci manages to do much more damage. She had grown use to his fighting style, she was almost bored with it. She could anticipate each move and act against it. Still, even with her strong game of mental chess, she was still physically weak. Her punches, while they sounded painful, only stung for a bit. Still, her strength was clear. Her reflexes have gotten faster and she was better at anticipating moves. This alone, made her dangerous.
"Thank you, you can go now" a Gamemaker tells Maci. She nods and leaves the room happily. She was confident that she made a great impression.
The Gamemakers score her performance, then they call the next one up.

Maci had been shocked by Shiloh's scars. But to her credit, she doesn't react. It wasn't like this was her first time seeing scars like these. She had seen worse at the hospital. Still, it was heartbreaking to see that someone that she began to consider seeing as a friend, had suffered this much. She isn't sure what to do to lighten the situation. She simply continues eating and hopes that Shiloh doesn't find the silence to be as awkward as she does.

Zahara grins at the lollipop, immediately recognizing who it's from. She skips over to Echo and Lifei. She jabs Echo with the wrapped lollipop. "Is this your way of summoning me?" She asks curiously as she unwraps it and pops it into her mouth. "You two missed it! I nearly burned down the training room! Ah, the look on that Peacemakers face was amazing!" She begins giggling at the memory.
....
Maci rolls her eyes as she passes Zahara. She does a great job at hiding it, because Zahara doesn't catch it. Noticing Shiloh, she sits down next to her. "Hi" she greets before quietly digging into her food. She had noticed the missing bandages on Shiloh's face, but was too hungry to really take notice and consider commenting on it. Not that she would anyway, if Shiloh wanted to tell her about it, she would. Maci knew not to press. Who knew that working out could make someone develop an appetite? Maci thinks to herself light heatedly.

Spotting Alana on the corner of her eye, she grins at the girl and says "watch this." Zahara scrapes some stones together. After a few minutes, the sparks fly onto the brush that is sitting in the middle of her log cabin styled ccampfire. She takes a step back as the fire slowly lights. The fire quickly becomes hotter and taller. The wood was stacked about three feet high, which was impressive enough on it's own, it should've tipped over. Tongues of fire nearly as tall as Zahara shoot upwards. It lights the brush around her station that she 'accidentally' forgot to move. The other stations would've caught on fire if it wasn't for a panicked Peacekeeper, who quickly grabs a fire extinguisher and fires it at her station. Zahara was laughing so hard that she was on the ground and clutching her stomach. Tears were falling down her face and she was pointing at the Peacekeeper with a free hand. "Did you see her face!?" She cackles.

There was no question about it, Maci was going to try and fight one of the instructors. But she finds that none of them want to fight her. It takes her a few minutes to actually convince one of them to fight her.
She steps onto the mat and watches her opponent closely. She notices that he wasn't as built as the rest, he lacked muscle on his arms, but had plenty on his legs. She would have to look out for kicks, that was probably his main fighting tactic. He was also very tall, which meant he could easily reach her.
He smirks, already expecting to beat her. A bell rings and he shoots forward, a kick fires out towards her. Maci just manages to duck under the kick. She leaps forward right as his foot comes back down onto the mat. She manages to throw a punch right at the same time as his leg is up again. They hit eachother at the same time. Maci winces slightly as she rises to her feet. She was rusty, that was for sure. But to her surprise, her reflexes were still sharp. She throws herself back into the fight. Everytime she is knocked down, she gets right back up. She was quickly wearing her opponent down as she learned more and more about him. He tended to hop onto the balls of his foot when he was about to kick, the opposite foot would be what he kicked her with. He also over exaggerated his punches, which made his blows powerful, it was necessary with his limited muscle. But that also gave her time to react. After awhile, the two seemed to be evenly matched. Even with Maci quickly becoming tired, she was still a good match for him. She may not have been able to punch or kick him hard enough to cause damage, but she was managing to dodge his blows almost everytime. The instructor started kicking even harder, clearly mad he couldn't get her. This only made it easier to dodge as his moves were much more noticeable.
Finally, they both stop. They were both exhausted. The instructors legs were shaking from having kicked so many times while Maci was shaking all over. It had been years since she had exercised this intensely. She was always scared that it would kill her. But, to her surprise, besides the obvious exhaustion, she wasn't showing signs of being sick. She actually felt good! She thanks her instructor and steps aside to pace around the gym and catch her breath.
....
Zahara watches Maci for a bit. She quickly got bored, especially when Maci and the instructor seemed to be evenly matched and were dodging each blow. It was much more interesting to watch Maci get thrown around. She skips over to one of the fire making stations. She stacks a bunch of wood and sticks together, clearly intending on making her fire as big as possible.

"I wouldn't really care if you remembered my memories" Maci admits. "I apologise for the way I reacted, I was just shocked. I never expected that I'm the reason why I got sick. That I'm the reason why my uncle and cousin vanished." She pauses. "I couldn't control my powers. Apparently I could cancel and disable powers." She clarifies. None of that mattered now. While it still shocked her, she had to look into the future. More importantly, she had to bring her old powers back, if not to use them, to finally cure herself! The familiar spark reappears in her eyes, the challenging look had returned. She eyes one of the training mats. She was itching to spar someone, maybe one of the Peacemakers.

It was eventually time for Maci to get up. She was suddenly eager to take a shower and wipe off her makeup from the previous day. She needed to move just as much as she needed to think. Luckily she could do both. She already knew that she was going to work out today. Maybe even spar. If she was that good at fighting, then she could probably bring back those skills. Muscle memory... As she walks the short distance to her shower, she suddenly feels much more aware of her body. She can feel something missing, she literally felt like a hollow shell. Even more curious, was the weakness she felt. She was so strong, so quick in her memory. But that was gone too. She pauses at her reflection and stares at herself. She finds that she is annoyed by the dark circles under her eyes, displeased with her scrawny figure. I'll find a way to bring the old me back, I'll reverse this spell...
She was quite happy with the tank top and shorts, it was nice wearing something that wasn't a dress. Her pleased smile vanishes when a Peacekeeper enters her room to give her a new dose of medicine.
"What's even in this medicine?" She asks as casually as possible. The Peacekeeper doesn't respond. This only makes her more curious. Whatever it was, it wasn't trying to cure her, it was trying to keep her alive.
She was one of the first to make it to the training room. This surprised her, she thought she would be late. She stands next to Phenix, but awkwardly keeps her distance. She struggles to think of something to say. She relaxes when Alana appears.
"Morning" she mumbles.
.....
"Morning!" Zahara shouts cheerfully. She enters the room, already munching on candy. She takes her place away from them, leaning against the wall and watching all three closely. "Man it's as quiet as a funeral home here!"

The painful memory resurfaces and Maci quickly remembers why she tried so hard to forget it.

Her, her cousin, and her uncle are back at the gym. Her and her cousin are both eager to have a sparring session. Her uncle joins the two and all three fight eachother. But it quickly becomes a match of them versus Maci. They were unable to use their ability, and both struggled to fight Maci, who was strong and skilled at fighting for her age. Even her uncle, who was going easy on her, had to use his full strength at times against her.
Once the match was done her uncle urges them to fight again.
"Focus on your powers Maci" he coaches. "Your powers are more dangerous than you think. If you focus hard enough, you can totally disable someone's power."
"That's a lie!" Maci says with a laugh. She was only half listening, too focused on dodging a few punches from her cousin.
"Disable his powers!" Her uncle commands, which she ignores. On the corner of her eye, she sees her uncle activate his powers. Like her cousin, he can create deadly bubbles. She doesn't react fast enough and is quickly trapped. She tries to escape but panic takes over, she finds that she can't do anything.
"Stop!" Her cousin shouts. "You'll kill her!" But her uncle doesn't listen. Right when Maci is sure she'll pass out she is finally free. She lands on the ground and desperately takes in mouthfuls of oxygen.
"Do it!" Her uncle roars.
"No!" Maci manages to fire back. Once again, her uncle activates his power and she is too weak to stop it. This time, her cousin tries to help. He tries to use his powers on her uncle. A bubble, which is more purple than black, flies at him. The more solid ball hits him, which makes him go flying. Maci screams in rage, water pouring into her mouth. It suddenly hits her that she is going to die. Right here at the hands of uncle. But before death can come, she is released. Her uncle stands over her with a menacing look. He watches her struggle to breath.
"Do it, ot he'll die!" Her uncle growls. "Don't waste this power Maci. You can become my apprentice. I'll train you to do what your father fears. You can be a solider, the most powerful solider in the world!" She raises up her eyes and does as told. But, instead of using her power on her cousin, she focuses on him. Red light spills out of her, hitting her uncle. She can feel his powers draining. He can too, because he screams out in fear. Her eyes widen, she realizes she can't control this power. With a mind of it's own, the light grabs her cousin, draining him of his power. Then it turns on her. The last thing she sees is a great light filing the room. It was blinding. Even worse, was the feeling of her powers leaving. It felt like her life was draining away as well. Then suddenly, there is darkness.

Sweat pours down Maci's face. The cold was no longer affecting her. Even with the good memories- her and Jaxon, all she can think about was what she just witnessed, what she just remembered. It now dawns on her that she had not seen her uncle or cousin again after that day. Did she kill them?
"Thank you." She whispers to Phenix. She slowly enters her room and crawls into bed. Too shocked to do anything else. She finds that she cannot sleep. Everytime she shuts her eyes, all she sees is that horrible red. Even worse, she hears their screams. She isn't certain that she slept, but she is aware of the light that pours into the room. She doesn't get up right away. Questions continued to plague her mind. Did her parents know? Did they purposely hide this information from her? Was she never sick, but instead, dying? There were too many questions and no possible way to answer them.

"If you wouldn't mind, I would like to take another dive into the depths of my brain" she smiles light heatedly, but her hand was shaking a bit. She wasn't sure if that was from the cold or her nerves. This information was scary, she was learning so much critical things about herself. "I need to know how I got sick" she explains softly. She watches him close waiting for him to use his ability on her again.
