"Good." Didact nodded. "I can give you guys a ride back to... wherever it is you want to go." he muttered.

Jack tapped the side of the Mask, thinking about all that had been said. "I must say, it certainly is useful to be largely indifferent to things such as this. Every time there's a major shift in this dimension, just retire to the Void for a few thousand years. Convenient for all parties involved."

Didact raised an eyebrow. "There would appear to be something fundamentally wrong with that, I just can't quite put my finger on it." he said.

"I wouldn't worry about it too much." Jack told him, stretching his arms above his head. Didact glared at the demon.

"It's all very well for you, you can just head back wherever you came from, can't you?"

"Hey, doesn't that Mantle of Responsibility thing demand that you try to do something to stop this?" Jack asked, his voice making it abundantly clear that he was smirking beneath the Mask.

Didact continued to glare and then gestured towards Sliuril and Copper. "What, stop them? You first, I'm comfortable in my current plane of existence."

Jack shrugged. "It would have been amusing to see you try."

Didact settled back down and closed his eyes again. "Well. This is all quite unfortunate."

"I would have said yes if only for the inter-dimensional war, but it would appear that someone lacks a sense of fun, so..." Jack shrugged, rolling his eyes. "The Key is your problem."

Didcat thought that it would probably be inappropriate for him to contribute to the conversation. He felt that the matters being discussed (far too casually if he was any judge) were a bit beyond him. However, there was a burning question that he needed to ask.

"So, how would the Throne transferring to one of you... change things?" the Forerunner questioned, cocking his head inquisitively.

"Ah. So you're all locked in a constant competition and the winner gets to rule the world?" Didact asked. "Total power and all that?"

Finally, the Forerunner moved, looking from Copper to Sliuril and back.

"I feel so sorry for you." he said.

Jack gave a small huff of laughter from across the room.

Jack shrugged and settled back with his hands behind his head, not wanting to get in between siblings. There wasn't much input he could give at the moment. At least none, he felt, that would be greatly appreciated.

"Hold on, this Key is a... what significance does it bear, again?" Didact asked from the floor, not even bothering to open his eyes as he asked the question. The disc blurred between his fingers.

Jack looked to Sliuril, curious. Perhaps he himself didn't appreciate the full importance of the Key, but he knew a lot hung in the balance. Didact didn't move, nor did he stop twirling the disc, but he listened carefully as well, wondering how much he still needed to figure out about these people around him.

"Very well." Jack nodded and sat down with a sigh. Didact hesitated for a bit before he silently followed suit. After a moment, the Forerunner produced a small disc from somewhere on his armor and began spinning it in between his fingers with his eyes closed, head reclined back against the wall.

"Well. One could possibly make the argument that that's comforting." Didact nodded. Jack raised an eyebrow.

"It's not likely that you'll ever get a better guarantee of protection." the demon said.

"I don't require pro-"

"Oh, okay, you're one of those." Jack waved a hand dismissively. "I've little patience for people who think they can protect themselves better than gods can."

Didact raised an eyebrow, about to argue. Then, he stopped himself and turned to Copper.

"Thank you." the Forerunner muttered. With that, he turned to look pointedly at Jack, who shrugged.

"Honestly, it's like having to teach a kid manners."

Didact decided not to respond.

"Oh, please. Take it from me, you're not living until you're dying." Jack told Glaurug. "Now, about getting back to Earth...?"

Didact gave Sliuril a very small smile and then stopped when he realised it was wasted under his helmet. "Don't take this the wrong way, but I wasn't so much worried about you as myself. I'm... very nearly positive he'll have come up with at least a few new ways to try to kill me by the time we get back." he said.

"Hmm?" Didact half-heartedly protested, raising an eyebrow at Copper. Then he heard Glaurug's question regarding Faith.

"You left your dragon on the same planet as Beowulf? The AI that's always trying to get others to murder me?" the Forerunner asked. After a moment, he shrugged and sighed. "Well, okay. I've never had to face a dragon hitman before."

Jack looked at Glaurug as another one of his own bones slipped quite loudly back into place. "Oh, you do, do you?" the demon deadpanned. "You poor, poor child."

"Oh, you did?" Jack asked. "Lovely. And with that indeed quite short adventure over, I see no reason to hang about." he muttered, walking onto the ship. "Oh and, before I forget to mention it, er... congratulations, you're being rescued."

"Oh, really? Appreciate it." Didact said from his place on the ground, raising two fingers to his forehead in a mock salute.

Jack half raised an arm in confusion and then dropped it with a sigh. "Maybe? I suppose it wouldn't be beyond me to gently tap something." He considered the statement and shrugged. Jack sent a mid-power bolt of energy at the chassis.

Jack opened his eyes and sat up. "Why..." he asked, standing up with several audible cracks, "...do I do these things to myself?" he muttered. The demon looked around at the shield and nodded his thanks to Sliruil. With that, he silently watched the Guardian crash into the ground.

Jack saw the shot fire, but there wasn't much he could do. He fired off the sphere of energy he had collected at the Guardian and tried to dodge to a side, but too little too late. The shot hit him and he went flying back, tumbling to the ground. The demon hit the ground hard, throwing up a cloud of dust.

He groaned quietly as he felt bones beginning to slip back into place.

Jack saw that Sliuril was diverting fire and decided to take a gamble for the sake of speed. He diverted almost all the energy from his shields to the rapidly growing orb of light in his hands. The magical drain was brutal and, already, he was starting to feel slightly tired. On the upside, he was very nearly ready to fire. And, seeing as it would be nearly impossible to miss or otherwise fail to destroy the Guardian, he reckoned that he may as well put everything he had into it.

Jack propelled himself far to the side, away from Sliuril, so that the Guardian would have to divide its fire. With that, he fired off the spell and, not waiting to see if it found its mark, launched himself into the air. Once more, he began drawing on the energy of the Sword and the Mask to start charging up a bolt of pure energy. Seeing as he also needed to maintain the shields around him, it would take him longer than was ideal, given the situation.

Jack muttered something about 'too old for this' and 'long days' as he began charging up a Vortex spell. It was a reliable fallback in almost all situations. Such as when facing down a giant metal construct on an alien planet outside of the Milky Way.

Yep. he thought as bolts pinged off his shields. Just as reliable there.

"Oh." Didact blinked. "Great. I'm assuming, what with you being the creator of a lot of this technology and all, it won't take you long to override Cortana's control?" he asked.

Jack released his own spell, which hit the Guardian centre-mass. It didn't take long for Promethean Knights to start appearing, already firing as they teleported in. Jack raised his shields.

Didact huffed. "Fine, you've got me there." The Forerunner looked around as the explosions rang out. "That would be your friends." he muttered.

"Oh, we're breaking out of a Cryptum?" Didact asked, standing up. "If only you'd taught me how to do that... quite some time ago."

"Oh, lovely." Jack nodded, a spell weaving itself around his fingers. The other hand was drawing energy from the Sword's seemingly limitless supply.

Jack stood up and dusted himself off, alternating between his normal senses and the Soul Sight, his eyes flashing like dim strobe lights. He didn't bother to mask them. "And how do we intend to play this?" he asked, his head tilting slightly to follow the Guardian's flight.

"Hey. Good to see you back up. But, yes, stay down." Didact nodded to Glaurug.
