Locus internally swore. "Mercenaries." Locus said. "Human mercenaries." he wondered how long he had to stay alive. Felix should've been here by now. How long could it take to transverse a few miles in a spacecraft? "The entire village was rigged. Picked us off, one by one. Locke and Glaurug were the last to go. I held them off best I could, but once the mines went off, I was knocked out." he invented wildly.

Locus saw the ship touch down and ran straight at it. "Keep it running!" he shouted, trying his best to look panicked. "Take off as soon as I'm on!" he said, truly hoping they would and not stop to investigate.

Locus stepped out of the boundaries of the village just as the mines went off, taking Washington with them. His job was done. He waited for Felix to come pick him up. Until then, he reflected on the fight. He'd gotten away practically unscathed and allowed himself the tiniest bit of pride in his performance.

Locke charged forward as well, right besides Glaurug. Their attacker stepped out, perhaps twenty meters ahead of them, he camo fading. Locke felt he should have been more surprised, but he supposed it made sense to some degree. Locus was, after all, a mercenary. He momentarily regretted sending the burst transmission earlier as they would never know the nature of the attacker now. That was the last thing he thought before a fifty cal pierced his brain.

Locus bought his rifle around to aim at Glaurug, but the soldier was too close. He threw the sniper to a side and bought out the shotgun. As soon as he was in range, Locus emptied the clip into him.

Locke nodded. "On three. And Wash. If we die, you get yourself outta here. Until then, make sure no one comes down this path."
The Freelancer gave a nod.
"Right, then. Here we go. One..." he started.

Locke sighed. "Right." he nodded. "Okay." There really wasn't anything left to say. He sent a burst transmission to Command, as well as the video and audio logs and a report he had compiled on the way here. The he drew Sliuril's pistol. "You didn't manage to get Jack's sword back to him." Locke said to Glaurug. "He's gonna be pissed."

Dutch and Carolina both charged forward, their armour absorbing the low calibre bullets. Locus backed around a corner as they came, making sure that he was safe from the others. The two soldiers stood before Locus, who had drawn his shotgun. Carolina moved with surprising speed. In a millisecond, she had closed the distance between them and had one hand on the shotgun. She pulled it towards herself, attempting to disarm him.
Locus simply let go of the weapon, leaving Carolina off balance. He fought his leg around in a kick, sending her sprawling, and not likely to get up. Dutch had also attacked, throwing one punch after another, Locus blocking them all. Locus caught his arm and bought a knee up into his stomach. Dutch gasped and fell over, but quickly recovered. Locus was already running for the fallen shotgun, which Carolina had let go of. Dutch raced him to it.
Locus got his hands on the weapon just before Dutch, bought it around and fired, leaving a hole in the soldier's chest. Dutch fell backwards. Locus calmly pointed the weapon and Carolina's head and pulled the trigger.

Locke swore as the two vitals signs faded. "How the hell is this happening?" he asked no one in particular. Washington had tried to run forward upon seeing Carolina's vitals flatline, but Locke held him back. "Getting killed won't do anything." he said. He looked over at Glaurug. "Any advice?" he asked.

Locus aimed at the head of the SPARTAN walking next to a Freelancer and fired a single shot. He took his eye away from the scope before he could see if it had hit and drew his assault rifle, unleashing a barrage of automatic fire on the group.

Locke spared a second to see who was left. Glaurug, The Freelancers and some SPARTANs. Then he noticed that the turrets had stopped firing. "Locke?" Dutch asked. Locke hesitated. "Five meter spread, move in that direction." he pointed towards the tower. They were still near the start of the village. He wondered what other surprises were in store.

Locus rigged the mines to explode in twenty minutes. Either he would be done by that time, or he wouldn't. He watched the timer, made sure his camo was on, drew his sniper and picked a target, a SPARTAN this time.

Locus saw the missile and, no matter how much it missed him by, knew it was time to get out of the tower. He pushed the button. Immediately, every house but the ones he had mounted turrets on exploded outwards, leaving nothing but burning debris. The turrets started firing on the survivors, which, as far as he could tell, included none of the Blood Gulch operatives. He vaulted over the side of the tower and started running. He had loaded five hundred rounds into the turrets, so they would keep the group pinned for the seventy seconds it would take him to reach the village. He drew his shotgun as he ran.

Locke noticed that Caboose had split and run. Good on him. "After him!" Locke shouted at Simmons, who was glad to leave the firefight. It was then that the world exploded. Locke must have blacked out for a moment, because the next thing he knew, he was on the floor, fire filling his vision and automatic fire echoing in his ears. He scrambled for cover, but could find none. He did his best to dig in and try to find the source of the bullets. Upon locating them, he started firing at he turrets.

Locus calmly pushed another round into the chamber and fired, this time aiming straight at Glaurug. Another bullet was sent, this time taking out Church. He looked carefully. Everyone was in cover by now. His hand hovered over the detonator that would turn the village into a firestorm.

Locus aimed through his scope, looking at the group. He wondered how to go about this. He centred his reticle on the legs of one of the Blood Gulch Operatives and squeezed the trigger.

Locke heard the report of a single shot. At the same time, Donut crumpled. "Get down!" he shouted, sprinting for the nearest cover, a crate pushed up against a house. Tucker and Grif both ran to Donut, who was screaming in pain, half his leg gone. There was a soft thud as a grenade landed right next to him. There was barely time to register this before it went off, engulfing the three soldiers.

Dutch swore. "Where is this coming from?" he shouted.

"Y'know, I'm wondering why you work alone. I mean, do you refuse to work with others, or do they refuse to work with you?" Locke asked, looking Glaurug up and down.

(BECAUSE IT WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN CONSISTENT WITH MY 'KILL EVERYONE' PLANS!)

"Err... lack of forethought?" Locke suggested. "Because walks are nice." Caboose said.

The Blood Gulch Crew looked at each other and shrugged. "Dunno." Church offered. "I think he got into an argument with Felix or something. Which would explain why Felix stayed behind." Washington reasoned.

"I love no planning. I love that gulping sound people make when they realise they messed up." Locke nodded. He looked around. It was promising to be a dull trip.

Locke nodded slowly. "So this is the bit where you send us all schematics of the village and everyone draws circles and arrows on it. The resulting mess shall be referred to as a 'plan'." he said. "As soon as we enter the village, we forget about it. So no pressure, 'kay?"

"Wow. That sounds really smart so I'm going to nod and say 'yes'." Caboose said. He nodded. "Yes."
Dutch rolled his eyes.

Locus looked at the village. It had one long, central road with thirty fairly large houses on either side. Several roads led off the main one, leading to houses set back from the centre. He had decided to rig the central road first.

Every scrap of cover he could find had been pushed up against the houses. The idea was that the soldiers would be hiding behind them when he blew the charges hidden in the buildings. He had mounted six auto turrets, three on either side of the road. The road itself was now a minefield which he could activate or deactivate at any given time. He could also set off individual mines remotely. Several grenades on robotic arms that he would control were ready to be aimed and thrown.

He had also hidden several clips of ammo for his sniper, shotgun and assault rifle amongst the various pieces of cover, in case they were needed.

The rest of the village was a maze of motion sensors, flashbangs, grenades and mines. He had set up several barricades to make sure that every path eventually lead to the main road.

He nodded to himself and turned to look at the sniper tower in the east. It was about five kilometre from the village. He knew that the group was approaching the village from the west, so that worked to his advantage. He had reinforced it slightly, but he knew that he would only spend a few minutes of the battle up there. Until then, it was his base of operations with crates of ammo, his weapons, satellite and thermal imaging, readouts from every sensor he had set up and a silent alarm for whenever somebody approached the village using the main road.

He looked back at the village. His work was far from over and he had several other things to set up. Perhaps a couple of blank rounds or decoy figures to confuse the group. He smiled to himself slightly. This would be interesting.

Death did as Sliuril had told him to. Then he turned to the SPARTANs. "Thank you for that." he nodded. He looked at John with a slightly puzzled expression. "You seem to slip through my fingers every time..." he muttered thoughtfully. With that, he disappeared to make sure that the massacre that had been planned would be successful.

"How far are we from the village?" Locke asked, looking at Glaurug.

"He runs a one-way communication system." Death muttered, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Sliuril, this fight isn't going to make me change my mind and isn't going make you change yours. Please, understand my situation. I like the universe. I keep all my stuff here. Not collecting these souls at the right time might well end it. They've done what they needed to do in their life. By not letting me do this, you might be condemning them to an even worse death further down the line, and eternal damnation after that." he said.
