Mattie nodded uncertainly, then glancing over to her drawing. It was hands down better than before, and the swan actually looked like a swan now.

~~~
Cam felt like Theseus was being a little too quiet. Risking a glance, he saw that Mattie was sitting upright again. She seemed to be a little distracted, however.
Mattie nodded slowly and waited for Metis to react. Something slammed against her mental shield so hard, she nearly collapsed into unconsciousness.
"M-metis?" Mattie groaned as her shields cracked.
"Do not fight it! Metis shouted.
"W-w-wha-"
But she was cut off, and she hurtled into darkness. It seemed like eternity before she opened her eyes. But Mattie was no longer in the beautiful garden with her classmates. Bellatrix was nowhere to be seen. Her vision adjusted, and Mattie stifled a scream.
Fires burned everywhere, and the ground was as black as charcoal. Dilapidated huts housed screaming mortals as they tried to escape, but some invisible force struck them dead one by one. One moment they were running, the next they lay dead on the ground. Lightning flickered through the dark sky, and thunder rumbled loudly afterwards.
"This is where it happened," Metis murmured quietly.
"What do you me-" Mattie's question died in her throat as it was answered.
A blue-haired woman had materialized from thin air, right in front of her. She was dressed in the cliche black garments of witches, but a crown decorated richly with glowing black diamonds sat atop her electric blue hair. The woman observed the destruction calmly, as if it were an interesting specimen she just dissected. She turned and her eyes widened when she saw Mattie. Their stormy blue eyes locked.
"Metis?" Mattie was almost afraid.
There was a cruel glint in those eyes. Eyes that looked just like Mattie's. Metis smiled, her mouth curving cruelly.
"You must be my second life. Do tell me. Do I cause as much destruction there?"
"I won't let you," the words spilled out of Mattie's mouth before she could stop them.
Metis raised her eyebrows. "You cannot stop yourself, my dear. I am you. Though I do suspect...with those clothes and that lack of cruelty in your eyes...Yes. You are mortal?"
Before Mattie could reply, Metis answered her own question. "Oh, but of course. Even now puny humans threaten to cast us out of this world. Us magical beings...we're extinct in your time, aren't we? Except for that occasional genetic mutation, when a mortal gains a portion of our magic."
Metis smiled that cruel smile. "They will probably kill my foolish brother as well. But what I do wonder is...why are you here?"
"This is you?" Mattie found herself thinking.
"It was me, before I died. I personally think that I am a much better person dead. Not to be biased or anything, but she was a little too violent for my liking," Metis said.
Past Metis' eyes widened. "So I am stuck as a parasite on a host of my second life? Who could ha- Yes, only my brother could have caused that."
A lightning bolt struck Past Metis' back and she flew right though Mattie's spirit. With a howl of outrage, she splayed her hands and shot lightning of her own at the unseen attacker's direction. The lightning halted mid-air, and was squashed into sparks. The attacker stepped into the light, and Past Metis growled.
Past Theseus stared back defiantly, his silver knight armor glinting along with those unusually cold silver eyes.
"You have caused enough direction, witch," he stated calmly.
"Oh, is it "witch" now, big brother?" Past Metis cooed. "Are you forgetting we have the same mother?"
"You are no sister of mine," Past Theseus said, angrily gathering moisture in the air and firing it as a blast of water at Past Metis.
Past Metis waved her hand, making the water dissolve back into air. Her eyes turned serious. "You could never beat me, brother."
"I cannot take you by force," Past Theseus said, making Past Metis smile. "But I can curse you."
"Ah, our sibling squabbles," Present Metis murmured wistfully.
Past Metis' eyes widened in horror as she took a step back. "No curse works on me, except-"
"Except the ones in one certain spellbook," Past Theseus continued. "We did wonder why you destroyed that island. Our seers managed to salvage the Cross Spellbook."
Past Metis began to dissolve into air, but Past Theseus intercepted the air currents, stopping her teleportation.
"This is the most painful part. We should leave," Present Metis said sadly.
The scene began to dissolve, but Mattie hung on. "Why?"
"Why what?" Metis said impatiently.
"Why did you cause so much destruction? So much that it compelled your brother to turn against you?" Mattie asked softly.
Metis was silent for a moment before answering. "You want the truth, Matilda? I think I became insane and bloodthirsty after my pacifist mother was hung by the mortals."
Mattie wanted to ask one more question, but she hurtled back into the darkness. She inhaled deeply as she shot up from the grass, her doodle pad having fallen from her lap as she was unconscious. She glanced at it carelessly, and picked up her pencil. She understood how to draw now. As she began to correct her sloppy drawing, she realized she understood more than just the simple lines as the strokes of the sword. She understood the destruction one death could cause.
~~~

Cam nodded uncertainly, and with a quick glance at the fountain, he corrected the missing flower carving. He heard a sharp gasp, and turned his head to see Mattie close her eyes and drop her pencil.

Cam had to admit it: he was impressed. The detail was just exquisite, and every curve perfectly formed. "That's pretty good. Do you take art lessons?" He admitted.

~~~
Meanwhile Mattie practiced drawing basic shapes as Bellatrix - rather hilariously - taught her how not to mess up so badly. Eventually, she had a crude drawing of the fountain. The swan looked more like a flamingo, but otherwise it was pretty okay for someone who'd only drawn stick figures their entire life.
[I sweeeeeear Bellatrix is hyper o-o Who gave her chocolate?!]
Mattie leaned away as quickly as she could and exhaled deeply. "O-okay."
Cam nearly jumped out of his shoes when Jora spoke again. Sheesh, he could've sworn she was a ninja. He glanced down at his sketch, which he had just finished a few seconds ago. He could have probably done better with watercolors, but all he had was his pencil. "Um, done," He said hesitantly.
Mattie's face was drained out of blood in a flash. "I have no idea how to draw. That fountain will probably end up looking like a birdfeeder," She confessed dejectedly.
Cam listened attentively to Mr. Alberty, trying to forget who he was sitting next to. He'd had a flair for art since he was a child, and he had finished sketching the base of the fountain in the next second. He risked a quick glance at Mattie, who was biting her lip and saying something to Bellatrix.
"You need not worry. My sister's kind of art includes bloodshed, war, and violence," Theseus tried to assure him.
"This isn't a contest, Theseus," Cam thought tiredly.
"Life is a contest itself! Theseus insisted.
Quickly shaking off Theseus' remarks to the back of his mind, Cam concentrated on his sketch.
[Yeah, art and mythology class.]
Cam nodded, a little surprised that the teacher had spoken directly at him. And joy, he had to work with a girl!
"So her name's Jora," Cam shoved Theseus back into the corner before he could add anything else.
Cam picked up his sketchbook and pencil, then managed to summon up his courage to walk over to Jora. "Um, need a partner?" He blurted out before he could stop himself.
~~~

Mattie idly doodled in some random flowers onto her sketchpad, until something caught her wandering eye. Cameron had walked over to Jora, and seemed to be nervously talking to her.
"He must be really scared of the opposite gender," Mattie thought.
"Or he's just trying to get your guard down so he can kill you," Metis said darkly.
Mattie found herself shaking her head wearily at Metis' paranoia.

Mattie reluctantly withdrew a part of her subconscious from the layers of reality and opened her doodle pad. She was rather a terrible artist, the pad mostly consisting of random squiggles and stick figures. She waited for Mr. Alberty to issue more instructions as she leaned on the wide trunk of the oak.

Cam stood up and brushed his jeans off before quickly seeking shade at a nearby maple. He saw that Metis' host whom Bellatrix had called Mattie had partnered with Bellatrix.
"Odd..." Cam heard Theseus mutter.
Cam settled against the trunk of a young maple and began to sketch while keeping an eye on "Mattie." After a minute or two, he glanced down at his finished drawing and did a double-take. He had unconsciously drawn the girl in the dress from before.
"I have officially gone insane," Cam decided.
"Or you might just-" Theseus started to suggest but Cam shoved him back into a corner of his mind, not wanting another argument so soon.
Cam snapped his sketchbook close and impatiently waited for the teacher to continue talking.

Mattie patiently let Bellatrix drag her along, while twisting a layer of reality to keep a wary eye on Cam. He had made quite the show with the whirlwind of textbooks, proving he had control over his energy manipulation. As they followed odd Mr. Alberty through many twists and turns that Mattie didn't bother keeping track off, Metis began to regain some composure. They emerged through one last doorway into a beautiful scene of a rippling lake with trees surrounding it.

Cam blinked in surprise at the outdoor sight. He was sure they were still in the school, as they had climbed some stairs less than a minute ago. Mr. Alberty spun around to face them, a content smile on his face.
"This room was created by one of the academy's former students. Beautiful, isn't it?"

Beautiful was an understatement. All kinds of plants grew everywhere, mixing all the smells into one. The grass was soft and healthy under their feet, and the rippling lake lazily danced with the gentle breeze that brushed against their faces. A soft "wow" escaped Cam's lips and he found himself on his knees, examining a nearby flower that swayed gracefully with the wind.

Cam shook his head impatiently, then concentrated on the air currents.
"Not if I can help it," He murmured.
A whirlwind of textbooks slapped Mr. Alberty away from his desk as the textbooks arranged themselves carefully on the desk. A certain textbook landed gently at the dazed teacher's feet. Cam inhaled deeply as sharp pang of pain jolted through his body; it had taken more energy that he had expected.
"Patience is a virtue," Theseus chided him.
"A virtue we can't afford," Cam dismissed him.
Mr. Alberty blinked uncertainly, quickly inspecting the textbook before standing up and brushing himself off. He glanced over to the students. "Thank you to whoever caused that."

Mattie listened quietly to Bellatrix and the boy's conversation. Her pounding headache had been reduced to a dull throb, and Metis' screaming had faded into fearful whimpers. From what Mattie could read, the boy had Metis' brother's spirit in his mind, and the boy was unusually nervous around the opposite gender. His name was Cameron Rochester. Mattie decided it was time to do a little research.

Mattie concentrated, then let her mind delve as deep as it could go in the layers of reality. This was how Metis gathered useful information, but Metis had explained it was very difficult and dangerous, proving even fatal at times. Mattie's consciousness sensed the stray thoughts passing by lazily through the layers, and it picked them up one at a time, dropping them after absorbing the information. The girl in the Victorian dress was from a wealthy family, and her name was Jora. The other girl who disliked plants was called Crystal, and her friend Violet had the gift of seeing through the timelines. Mattie's consciousness dismissed all of this without a single afterthought; it was not was she was looking for. Finally, it grasped a newer thought, and absorbed the information.

The boy's name was Cameron Rochester, as Mattie already knew. He was an only child, and was loved and adored by his wealthy parents. His powers had showed themselves at the mere age of seven, and Theseus had started talking to him soon after. His parents believed he had gone insane, and after many consultations with all kinds of people, decided to send him here. Mattie's consciousness gathered no more information from the thought, and dropped it before returning to Mattie's body.

Mattie blinked, dazed. That had been the first time she had tried that, and she was feeling slightly nauseous. Another student had entered the room while her consciousness was out of her body, and the teacher had finally finished organizing his piles of books.

"At least you don't need to worry about dissipating into nothingness now," Cam thought.
"W-well, um. T-that's nice to know. D-do you think class will start anytime soon?" Cam stammered.
"A fair point, my fellow knight," Theseus nodded.
"I'm not a knight, Theseus," Cam thought wearily.
"Blasphemy! All noble men are knights!" Theseus argued.
Seeing as there was no point in arguing with Theseus, Cam turned his attention back to the rest of the class. He noticed the girl he had met by the door for the first time after entering the classroom.
"H-hey, d-do you know who t-that girl is?" Cam summoned the courage to ask Bellatrix, who was the nearest.

"Life drainer, I told you," Theseus said triumphantly.
"His name's Theseus," Cam mumbled, watching the teacher out of the corner of his eye. Metis had inhabited this girl temporarily?
"My sister's host must've shared contact with her by accident," Theseus decided.
"Wouldn't that be excruciatingly painful for Metis?" Cam wondered.
"It would be, indeed," Theseus said grimly. "Us spirits, we're attracted mostly to hosts with more than sufficient life energy to sustain one body. Life drainers take away that energy, and a part of us gets sucked into them. Albeit it is temporary most of the time, it is enough to dissolve spirits completely. Only those with strong willpower can survive.
[Noooot sure if I used the word "albeit" properly, but eh.]

"It appears your sister's host has a friend," Cam noted with interest.
"Impossible. Metis despises mortals," Theseus dismissed the thought.
Cam feebly nodded at the dark-haired girl with pigtails.
"You are getting better at communicating with the ladies," Theseus said.
"Don't make fun of me," Cam groaned.

Cam froze momentarily before regaining his train of thought. Another girl? How many girls were in this school? Were there any guys at all?
"I'm Cameron Rochester. I just got here a few minutes ago," Cam managed to blurt out while keeping an eye on the teacher.
"Life drainer," Theseus immediately declared.
"You've got to be fibbing," Cam thought.
"No lie escapes this noble tongue," Theseus said seriously.
Cam had to stifle a laugh at this sentence. Theseus had a funny way of speaking. Then again, he wasn't exactly from Cam's time period.

Mattie gritted her teeth and forced her mind into cooperation. Her feet reappeared out of the floor and she inhaled deeply.
"Lost control for a sec. Must be my nerves," Mattie lied easily. No point in involving Bellatrix in Metis' problems.

I have no idea if this has been asked before - I was too lazy to browse through 23 pages of questions - but is there a price guide for items such as mystery boxes/keys and gems? I vaguely recall seeing a guide for it, but not too sure now as I can't find it.

"He's found us!" Metis continued to wail, giving Mattie quite the headache.
"He hasn't killed you yet. Now please shut up," Mattie gritted her teeth, trying to block out the pounding headache.
Mattie felt her temperature rise ever so slightly, the fire inside of her trying to break through the thin veneer of calm.
"Metis, shut up," Mattie growled, barely keeping it together.
Metis, however, ignored this and continued to scream her lungs out. Mattie's concentration snapped, and her boots began to sink into the floor. It was only an illusion though, and Mattie knew it. The problem was, she was so good at making them even she felt like it was real. Whenever Mattie was under a lot of stress, her mind slipped through a thin layer of reality, twisting and turning the layer until the human senses couldn't tell if it was real or not. It wasn't such a cool power when it backfired on you and only muddled your senses.

~~~
Cam wasn't enjoying his first class at all, and it was Theseus' fault. He wouldn't stop shouting angrily about his half-sister Metis, and made it quite difficult for Cam to think straight.
"With all due respect, Theseus, will you shut up?" Cam practically growled.
Theseus was about to reply when Cam noticed that Mattie's boots were slowly sinking into the floor. Her body was tense and she seemed to flicker in and out of existence, as if she were sinking into a different level of reality.
"My sister's host is losing control, probably due to my sister's screaming," Theseus lowered his voice in surprise.
"Wait. I can't manipulate the energies of the layers of reality or I pass out. How come she can do it without even concentrating?" Cam furrowed his brow.
"My sister relied a lot more on her tricks and schemes than on her combat skills. I suspect she passed this on to her host," Theseus guessed. "When Metis used her combat skills though, she was still a worthy opponent. She was a master of fire and earth, with advanced understanding of air and water. Mixed with her cunning and ill temper, she drove fear into the heart of the magical community."
"You never told me this before," Cam stated, surprised.
"I did not want to frighten you," Theseus admitted.
Cam bit back an angry retort and focused on Mattie's sinking feet. She must have come out victorious with a mental battle with Metis, because she stopped flickering and her boots were fixed above ground.
"I'm going to talk to the girl after classes," Cam decided.
"NO!" Theseus yelled.
"If she was as evil as Metis, she'd have killed me already," Cam argued.
"You are putting both our lives at stake! No!" Theseus insisted.
"I'm doing it whether you like it or not," Cam said firmly.
Theseus probably regretted taking the rebellious boy as his host.
[Welp, who's gonna make up the NPC teacher?]
