Shock nearly caused Maci to drop the carving. This wasn't her first time dealing with telepathically, it was part of Jaxon's power. Still, this was completely unexpected to her. As far as she knew, telepathy wasn't part of Phenix's power and she was unaware of the fact that he could possibly have the technology to make it a thing.

Still, here she was, looking into this carving and hearing his voice. There was no other possible explanation. Yeah, I can hear you she thinks to herself as she stares intently into the red stone.

Maci tips her in confusion as she accepts the eye carving. Phenix was smart, there was most certainly a good reason for him to give her this carving. Which meant that whatever it did, it was most likely something helpful. She holds the carving up into the window, allowing the sunlight to shine through the eye. It was both disturbing and beautiful to look at. She takes a second to admire it before once again, trying to figure out what it did.

Casting one last concerned glance at Angie, Maci makes her way over to Cherry and Terra, she is careful to ensure that Charlie is still following her. She gives Terra a kind smile as she passes a small bowl filled with fruit over to him. "Are you feeling better now?" She asks.

Maybe it was because she was distracted, or maybe this specific power was extremely difficult for her to read. All she knew now was there seemed to be a dark aura in the air. What was most concerning was she couldn't exactly read where it was directed at. Even more confusing, was the fact that she couldn't find the source of the power. All she felt was a presence.

She looks around, trying to see if maybe somebody was fixated on somebody else. Perhaps she was picking up some sort of illusionary power? Those could be difficult for her to interpret. Still, nobody seemed to hyperfocused on anyone else. Her eyes land on Angie. For a moment, she considers that maybe she is the source. No... Angie couldn't possibly be that powerful, she is too young Maci thinks to herself. Her suspicious gaze softens when she realizes that Angie is alone. She doesn't seem to be afraid though.

Maci's thoughts are interrupted by small movements on the corner of her eye followed by a giggle. She glances down at Charlie, looking surprised that she had made a sound. Now that she thought about it, Charlie hasn't spoken a word yet. Was it possible that she was a mute? Maci doesn't ask that question, she doesn't want to press. Instead, she patiently waits for Charlie to load food onto her plate so that she can return to Cherry and Terra.

Maci nods. "Alright, one bowl-full of fruit coming right up." She carefully stands up, as to not disturb Charlie too much. She takes a step forward before pausing to glance over at Charlie. "You can come with if you want" she tells Charlie before continuing onward.

Again, she tries to analyze each tribute that she passes. Some groups seem to have broken apart, but others still remained. She would have to keep an eye on them. When she makes it to the buffet she grabs a few of each fruit for Terra and then glances at the rest of the options, trying to decide what she'll want for herself. There were plenty of different foods to choose from. But for some reason, all of them made her feel sick to her stomach. It's probably just my nerves Maci assures herself. Yeah, let's just go with that...

Maci jolts in surprise when she feels somethings on her shoulder, but quickly relaxes when she realizes that it's Charlie. What is she, a ninja? Maci wonders with an amused smile. "At least there are positives to his power. I am interested to see what Terra can do, but it's no pressure. I don't want him to overwhelm himself. Enough about that though. Are you three hungry? I can get you some food of you'd like?" She offers.

"That's, a lot of responsibility to place on one person. How'd you get so unlucky as to have a power like that?" Maci asks light heatedly. She glances away from them again to search around the train and look at every tribute. You really need to work on your paranoia Maci thinks to herself darkly. She turns her head back to the two, now satisfied to see that nobody was watching them too closely.

Maci is silent for a moment. This power was a strange one, and deadly, especially given their situation. Would he become unconscious in the arena? Of course he would, it happened twice a day. This was going to make things difficult...

This was worrisome to her. But she tries to hide it. She sits on the floor next to their seat and offers them a kind smile. "That's rather interesting power. I've never seen anything like that before. What happens if you don't keep the void intake?" She asks in a desperate attempt to distract them from the situation on hand.

Maci nods, seeming to accept this answer. "I see... I'm sorry, that must be hard to deal with" she tells him. "I hope that things eventually work out between the two of you." She turns to look at Terra and Cherry and gasps. By the looks of it, Terra seemed to be unconscious. "Is everything okay?" She asks, much calmer than how she really felt. She walks over to them and straightens her back up in an attempt to shield them from everyone else. "What happened? Is everything alright?"

Maci glances at Eric with an alarmed look. But the alarm disappears when she realizes that he wasn't trying to be hostile. She opens her mouth to reply to him, but closes it when Zoe enters onto their train. She notices how Eric seems be frightened of her, and steps away. Unlike other tributes, who would try to use this against him, she recognizes this as a sign of a troubled past.

She knows a thing for two about a troubled past. Her instincts scream at her not to, but she can't help but feel pity for him.

"It's alright" she assures him. To Charlie now, "I'm sorry to hear that a tribute scared you like that. You are doing alright now right?" She glances up at Eric again, trying to think of something to say. Maybe something to break the tension? "I saw what happened earlier...- onstage" she quickly clarifies the last part. "Is everything alright between the two of you?" Her question is innocent. But out of a learned habit, she'll try to read between the lines of his answer. In all honesty, she really seems to be asking: will I need to watch out for her? She mentally curses to herself. Prying for information was the last thing she should be doing to this poor boy. But she can't take back her question.

Her back stiffens when she hears the approaching footsteps. Her teeth grit together and she turns her head slightly, eyeing the person. For a moment, one would almost say that Maci resembles a starving dog, huddled over a piece of meat.

Her tension disappears when she realizes that the person wasn't much of a threat. She looked young, about twelve. Her eyes become filled with pity because this girl was far too young to be here. She turns her head slightly, analyzing the girl. Her eyes almost immediately fall on her bandaged hand. She is hurt? Already? Maci wonders. "Are you alright?" She pauses for a moment. "Who did that to you?" She asks afterwards. Her voice held a deadly calmness as she tries to meet Charlie's gaze. Whoever did that to her would definitely be someone she would want to avoid. If they could hurt Charlie, then they wouldn't hesitate to hurt Cherry or Terra. I'll have to have a 'talk' with them...

The train was finally moving. That meant only one thing. The tributes were finally here. The Games had officially started. Maci releases a breath, jumping in surprise when she realizes that it was shaky. She holds a hand onto her chest to feel her pounding heart. She realizes now that she was scared.

She shakes her head, feeling oddly disgusted with herself. She didn't have time to be afraid. She had people she wanted to protect. Speaking of which... Where were they?

Maci pushes herself away from the window and strolls around the train, looking for them. She tries to ignore the multiple tributes she passes. But she can't help but make note of every group. All these groups were possible alliances, possible groups that could go after her. She is careful to not stare at them for long and to keep her expression as passive as possible. She doesn't speak to them. She'll have plenty of time to talk to them during training, she'll just have to hope that they are friendlier than the people who were in her Games.

She relaxes when she finally spots Cherry and Terra. She glares over her shoulder, just in case someone was watching. Being in an alliance with children was dangerous, they could easily become a weakness to exploit. Her jaw hardens at the thought of anyone daring to do that to her. But it could happen. Afterall, the Gamemakers themselves tried to take advantage of the multiple mothers in the arena by sending a trap that resembled toddlers. She can't help but wince at the memory. "How are you two holding up?" Her voice and expression becomes much softer when she looks back at them.

The moment the door opens Maci is practically thrown off her feet by Jaxon, who basically tackles her and catches her in his arms. Maci makes an odd sound in the back of her throat and opens her mouth to speak. The two were finally alone. Jaxon pulls away slightly and faces her. His brows furrow as he gives her a concerned look. She didn't know how long this moment would last. There were matters the two would need to speak of.
"Listen, I was stupid, really stupid, to think that we should've went to the Reaping. I didn't expect to be picked-"
"You would've regretted it if we didn't go." Jaxon points out. "Especially with Phenix's kids being picked."
"I know! Jaxon just listen for a moment-"
"They are expecting us to bolt again." Asher announces as he walks into the room. "There are Peacekeepers everywhere!" His eyes meet Maci's and his cheeks redden in shame upon seeing her glare. "Did I interrupt something?" He asks.
"No" Maci lies. She breaks apart from Jaxon, even though she would like nothing more than to stay with him. She holds onto his hand for dear life and glances at the floor. How do I tell him? She wonders. Would it be cruel to do so? Especially now? She was a fool for waiting. A fool for having gambled her time.
"Maci" Asher breaks her away from her thoughts. "You have a very great opportunity handed to you, you know" he says. Upon seeing her confused expression he continues. "You can break apart the Capitol from the inside" he explains further.
"How do you think I'll do that?" Maci hisses. She throws a wary look at the door, checking to see if a Peacekeeper overhead.
"Maybe you could convince the tributes to form a giant alliance and refuse to kill eachother?" Asher offers.
"Oh yes, I'm sure that'll work out great. We could also weave together flower crowns and bake some biscuits to offer to the Capitol as a peace offering" Maci responds bitterly.
"Stop it. We both know how important a revenge attack is. You've always discussed planning one. This is the best time to do it." Asher snaps.
"I can't do this alone." The defeat in her voice was surprising, even to her.
"But you won't be alone. You'll have us on the outside. You'll also have a pissed off Phenix, who I'm sure will do anything to get his kids back." Asher assures. Silence hangs in the air between the three of them. "I love you, stay strong out there." Asher tells her. He gives her a tense hug and then leaves. Finally leaving Jaxon and Maci alone, if only for a few moments.
"No pressure, but you alone, have to take down the Capitol" Jaxon says with a chuckle and eyeroll. "Just focus on surviving and protecting Phenix's kids. That's already enough to put on your plate as it is." Behind them, there is movement. Peacekeepers have appeared to take her away. Maci's eyes widen, it was too early. There was still too many things unsaid.
"Wait!" She shouts. "Jaxon I-" a hand drags her away roughly. Hoping to buy another second, she punches the Peacekeeper but misses. The now angered Peacekeeper drags her away much more forcefully.
"I know, I love you too" Jaxon responds. He is also trying to fight a Peacekeeper to make his way over to her. Maci's heart breaks as she is practically thrown onto the train and forced to watch Jaxon retreat. "That wasn't it." She whispers to herself.

Maci hesitates, looking obviously confused by what Angie had said. She shakes off her confused look quickly. Quickly assuming that Luke was nothing more than an imaginary friend. "I'm sure he'll be really helpful" she tells Angie encouragingly. "Stay strong." She turns to Cherry, now noticing that she seemed most affected by the news. She gently draws the girl in for a hug. She glares at the others, just in case they read this as a sign of weakness.

She was terrified. But she needed to be strong. She needed to ensure that Angie and Cherry would return to their families. That was one of her main goals she could focus on. Better to pay attention to that rather than her terror.

Jaxon nods and whispers his thanks to Phenix. Both him and Asher visibly relax. Everything was going to be okay-
"Cherry Osiris." Maci gasps at the name. She spins around, her mouth open and ready to object to this cruel fate. But the mayor was already crumbling to the ground in a fit of agony. Maci doesn't hide the cruel smile from her face. For once, she is glad Phenix has such a cruel power.
"I'll protect her!" Maci shouts. "I swear Phenix! I'll protect her with my life!" She shouts out again, just in case he didn't hear her. She glances over at Cherry, her heart drops when a new name is called. A girl, far younger than Cherry stands next to her. She closes her eyes in a sorry attempt to hide her tears. No matter how hard she squints, she can't stop from them coming. Her fists are clenched, and she imagines being able to face Snow one day. Oh how she wanted to hurt him! Hurt every soul behind this!
She opens her eyes, blinking a few times to stop the tears. She crouches down and glances at Cherry and Angie. "Don't worry, everything will be okay" she tells the two. "I'll protect the both of you." She vows.

Maci's eyes widen as she watches the first few girls get picked. She pitied them, especially the first three. They would be going against Scarlett, Lifei, and Zoe, who all seemed to be a rough crowd. Her eyes widen at the sight of the man shouting at Zoe. Did she really do that to him?

"Maci Lam" the mayor reads, his tone was mocking and now, despite the confrontation from earlier, he was smiling.

"What!? No!" Jaxon shouts out in disbelief. He is the first to register the news. Both Asher and Maci are silent. Struck silent by shock. A hand roughly grabs Maci's wrist and tears her backwards. She almost falls on her face, but Jaxon's shouts tears her back into reality. "Come on!" He shouts to her and Asher.

But the Peacekeepers had been expecting something like this to happen. They block the exit so that they cannot escape. Both Jaxon and Asher throw themselves at the Peacekeepers. For a moment, it actually looks like the three will escape, it was obvious that the Peacekeepers were not expecting them to actually attack them.

But the moment they snap out of their shock is when the two are done for. The Peacekeeper's don't bother tazing them. They simply beat the two with batons. To Maci's shock, they still don't give up. When they fall they simply stand back up again with more strength and fury. But she can already see that escape is impossible. There were too many Peacekeepers. Already, more were swarming over to them.

"Stop!" She demands. She rushes into the fight and grabs both of their arms, hoping to tear them away from the fight. That's when a baton slams against her the back of her head. For a moment, all she sees is darkness. But then she sees light. She was no longer standing, now she was in Jaxon's arms. Nobody was fighting now, everyone seemed to be watching her. She glances at him with a confused look. Did she get knocked out? What had happened? She could've swore that she was just standing up a second ago.

"You'll regret that!" Jaxon barks out at the Peacekeepers.

"Don't" Maci manages to say. She turns over in his arms so that she can stand now. Jaxon sticks close to her, just in case she falls. "I'll be okay" she whispers to him. She rests her head on the small of his neck and wraps her arms around the back of his neck. "Just like last time, I'll be fine!" She repeats, but at the same volume. "I- I have to be. For-.." She yelps in surprise when hands tear her off of him. The Peacekeepers have grown tired of the sight, and were now dragging her away.

"Maci!" Jaxon shouts. He tries to race after her again, but is stopped by a swarm of Peacekeepers. Both him and Asher don't fight them this time, they simply watch Maci get dragged onstage with desperate looks.

"Great stories?" Maci asks with a chuckle. "He thinks too highly of me, your father saved multiple lives in that arena, including mine, at the beginning of the Games. I hope I can share these tales with you one day. And yes, he was a victor in my Games" she explains.

She stands up when they are approached by Scarlett and Lifei. Maci recognizes Lifei, but she doesn't remember ever interacting with her. She steps in front of Cherry and gives the two a suspicious look. "What do you two think you are doing?" She asks, bewildered. She tries to block the body from Cherry's view.
...

Jaxon nods in agreement. He glances at Phenix, now noticing that he seemed to be a bit distracted. In fact, he seemed to be looking around, as if expecting trouble. Jaxon quickly does the same, although he doesn't see what Phenix is seeing.

Jaxon grins back. "I would never once doubt Maci's judgement, but she was right about you, you are too kind to do this for us. I-" he gestures to Maci and Asher. "We appreciate it." He turns to the stage as well. Even with Asher's reassurance he still was worried that they would be picked. What if Maci counts? Sure there were multiple victors and they didn't receive the money that victor's normally win, but still, that could be used against them. "I just want this d*mn thing to be over with so that I can relax" Jaxon admits.
....

"Practice makes perfect. But your mother is right, that sort of training can be dangerous. But that shouldn't be your reason to refuse to get better. I say you keep practicing, I'm sure there is a safe way to practice flying." She reaches a hand out towards Cherry. "I'm Maci, Maci Lam by the way. I'm a good friends with your father."

Asher and Jaxon exchange a look. Jaxon, as usual, quickly takes Maci's side. He knows that she'd want to accept, although she'd be hesitant because that would mean being a possible burden.
Asher knows this, but still, it's obvious that he wants to refuse. The last thing he wanted was to drag someone else into this mess. It can't hurt, afterall, he did try to send bodyguards after us. Asher reminds himself. It was also be nice to not have to worry about constantly moving homes. He was also desperate for a break, he had finally reunited with Maci, now he had one more life goal, to get revenge for what the Capitol did to him and his father. All he needed was some down time to plan.
"Alright" Asher agrees, shaking Phenix's hand. Maybe Phenix could help. Asher doubted it, Phenix did have a kid to protect afterall.
"We won't be a burden" Jaxon promises. "If needed, we can pay some sort of rent?" He offers.
...

Maci's eyes soften. She quickly understands that Cherry is shy. Her eyes widen slightly at the sight of her wings and she looks at them with a curious expression. "Whoa, can you fly?" She asks.

"You have?" Maci asks. She couldn't help but feel guilty. Phenix must've done a lot of work to be able to protect her, and she hasn't lifted a finger for her old friends from the Games. "I appreciate the gesture, any help is necessary." She glances over at Cherry and offers her a kind smile. "Who is this?" She asks warmly, she slowly crouches down so that she can be at face level with the younger girl. "Hello" she greets.
"We got married after the Games" Jaxon explains, noticing that Maci was now too distracted to fill him in. "Even with everything against us, life has been treating us well. We are all happy and content. Maci is finally doing what she loves- nursing" he explains.
"Happy and content? Maybe you two are, I'm always the one reminding you two of the reality we're both in" Asher responds bitterly.
