Jumping in surprise from the sudden voice behind her, Sage turns around to notice Maddy behind her. "This is Morgan" Sage replies simply. "She has been keeping me up to date on Gwen and her army" she explains.

Sage watches Morgan burst through her door and nearly fall on her face. Sage opens her mouth to ask if Morgan was alright, but closes it when Morgan starts talking. This was exactly what Sage had been talking about. Morgan was incredibly useful. She had mistakingly given her critical information. "I'm fine! You don't need to constantly watch me!" Gwen's words drift in Sage's head. This was only a few days ago. Sage assumed it was a lie. But the confirmation was nice.
"I see, thank you for bringing this to my attention Morgan, I'll be sure to talk with her." What was she supposed to do now? Sage had tried everything, the only option left was to be cruel and ignore Gwen's problems. "Is there anything else that I need to be aware of?"

....

Gwen nods, she seemed to quite satisfied with his answer. Were the Cloaks truly gone? Knowing Talla, she doubted it. Still, their silence was quite odd to her. Maybe there was a chance that Talla forgot about them?
"Keep your eyes open. Trouble can lurk anywhere, even within our own ranks." There it was, the haunted look in her eyes. Her own army had once turned on her. She chose to be ignorant of the fact that her army wasn't actually her army, rather, secretly members of the Cloaks.
She may not have anymore motivation to fight, but she was determined to ensure that, that would never happen again. If she could say anything, it was that she was keeping a close eye on the people in her army. Without another word, she rides away from the patrol group and heads towards the barracks. These days, she hung back and watched her army train. They had yet to learn any new fighting tactics from her.

It was almost as if Eric's inner thoughts had summoned her. By accident, Gwen had come across the patrol on horseback. She quietly looks at them for a moment, although she seems to be looking straight through them. After an uncomfortable moment of silence, she speaks:
"Do you guys have anything to report?" Her eyes were focused now and she was looking at Eric. Even though she was addressing the group, it was obvious that the question was directed to Eric. The last thing she needed was for Sage to be at her throat. In order to do that she had to at least make an effort to look busy.

....

Sage hung close to the room that Maddy is sleeping in. She had work to do, but couldn't bring herself to focus on it while knowing that Maddy would be alone. Gwen's paranoia seemed to rub off on Sage. It most likely had something to do with the time Maddy had been captured by the Cloaks.
Sage's jaw tightens in the usual way it does when she thinks of the Cloaks. They had been quiet for awhile now. Gwen had assured her that her patrols had yet to find evidence of the Cloaks, that there were no moles within her army. But Sage couldn't bring herself to believe her, not with Gwen giving nothing but the bear minium. Fortunately, Morgan had proved to be a reliable messenger. She had confirmed everything that Gwen has stated. At times, Sage considered retiring Gwen, but she couldn't bring herself to do that. Not when she had witnessed Gwen's strength countless times. I need your strength, you and Maddy Sage thinks to herself with a sigh.
Speaking of which... Morgan was due to arrive shortly. She hoped her news would still remain the same as what Gwen continued to tell her.

The sun had risen over the land. Although it was hard to tell due to the cloud cover in the sky. Just outside of the kingdom, there is a lone figure standing over a grave. Her eyes and cheeks are wet and her limbs look weak. It almost looked like a small gust of wind could easily knock her down. She had visited this grave every day for the past two years. She could walk over here blindfolded. Her eyes were dazed as she stared at the gravestone of her former lover. She had plagued her mind with thoughts of him. It had gotten to the point where she felt as if she had driven the sword through his side. She could see it now, her sword through his side. His eyes meeting her's, wide and questioning. Blood splattering out of his mouth as he dares to take a breath. "Why?" He asks. He falls back and she tries to catch him, to stop him from falling onto the cold ground, as if that would save him. But her hand just passes right through his and he disappears beneath the ground.

Gwen had gone over Dylan's death thousands of times. Each time, she was desperate to find a way to save him. But she could never find a way. It was almost as if his death was nothing but a cruel fate. No, this wasn't fate. If only Gwen had picked up on his plans sooner! That was the way she could've saved him! Gwen's arms begin to shake as she starts to sob at this realization. She leans onto her sword for dear life, before her despair drives her to the ground. She sits on her knees, her head rested on her sword.
"You dumb fool!" Gwen screams. "If only you told me sooner- everything you were planning! Maybe then I, no, we could've done something to save you!" She takes in a shaky breath, painfully gulping down a sob. "Or you could have been a coward and continued to make me hate you so that I would no longer be forced to burden this pain" she whispers. She reaches a hand out to place it onto the gravestone. It felt warm beneath the touch. She doesn't move until she hears footsteps behind her.
"General? Will you be joining us for the morning announcements?" A voice asks.
"No" she responds curtly.
"We understand you are still mourning, but you should be hesitant to defy Sage's orders-"
"Enough!" Gwen roars. She stands up quickly and meets the eyes of a younger boy, her assistant. He takes a fearful step back, unsure of the situation.
"I won't be around forever, somebody has to take my place when I die. You are the one for the job." It was nothing but an excuse, she wasn't fooling anybody. "Consider this to be practice. Did our patrols find any signs of an invasion?" She asks.
"No" the boy responds.
"Then I have nothing to say to my men and women. You can be the one to catch them up. I'll be joining you momentarily." She turns around now to stare back at Dylan's grave. "You're dismissed."

"Snow... Yes, I'm certain many people feel the same. Payback against him would be beneficial to everyone." He glances out the window and sighs. "I don't know who it is I'm supposed to target. All I know is that there is some person out there who had gotten away with my father's murder. He is going to regret not killing me right away."

"I'm 22 and he is 20" Asher responds. His feeling towards Derek was mutual, it felt nice to know that another person was desperate for revenge against the Capitol. Derek's compliment puts a smile on Asher's face. He was worried that his plans would be met with nothing but arguments, instead it was met with praise. He gives Jaxon a stay quiet, I'll handle this look before returning his gaze to Derek. "So, who wronged you?" Asher asks.

The mention of a grudge makes Asher perk up. "I hear you" Asher mutters. "But I'm not willing to put my hate before Maci. Once they are secure, I can't promise that I'll continue to remain civil" he glances at a surprised Jaxon. "Sorry, but I've been meaning to find and kill a certain someone for years now."

"I appreciate your help. Although I have to admit, I hope that it won't come down to it. I think we can all agree that our goal is to keep this as peaceful as possible." Jaxon adds in agreement.

Maddy's sudden outburst was unexpected, but not surprising. After everything they had been through, there was bound to be sudden unexplainable mood swings. "Star? We should get going. It's late and I'm sure the both of you are going to be busy tomorrow" her voice was light, but her words were demanding. "She is dealing with a lot, try to not pay too much attention to her outburst" she tells Star quietly; so that Maddy won't overhear. She is the first one to step out of the room, but she pauses by the doorway, waiting for Star to follow so that she can close it once Star passes by.

It doesn't take long for Sage to fall asleep. She was keeping herself busy everyday. She could've swore she was starting to feel like her actual age.

"Talla is strong. There is no such thing as getting close to killing her, not without having a knife pressed across her throat" Sage takes a step back, allowing Leaf to check up on her. "You need to stop beating yourself up, all of this is Talla's doing. One day, she'll finally get what's coming to her. You did everything you could to stop her, we all have." Sage tries to make her voice sound convincing, but it was apparent that she didn't believe her own words. They were not prepared for another battle. Their citizens were just holding on and their army barely had a leader.

Gwen was in a similar state as Maddy. She was nothing but a shell of what she use to be. She was once mighty and courageous, now, Gwen looked sickly. Her once muscular body had grown thin. Her sharp and calculating eyes looked haunted. Even her mood had changed. Gwen was usually sad, but sometimes, she would randomly get angry. Those moments were oddly pleasant, because it seemed like, if only for a moment, the old Gwen had returned.

Sage doesn't mention any of this. It was her burden to bear. She was determined to rebuild this kingdom. No, it was her job to rebuild this kingdom. It would be helpful if a few people worked with me she thinks to herself bitterly, thinking of Gwen.

There is obvious confusion on Sage's face. What was she apologizing for? Who was watching her? She could only assume it had something to do with Maddy's dream. Whatever it was, it triggered a pretty big reaction out of her. She was certain that Maddy was continuing to have dreams about the previous battle.

"It's not your fault!" Sage responds fiercely. "None of this is!" She pauses, allowing Maddy a moment to try and calm down. "Let's get you back into bed" she tells Maddy softly as she gently lifts Maddy up high enough for her to be placed back onto her bed. Once Maddy is comfortable, she tucks her into bed. Sage had never had kids, never wanted to have kids when she was younger. But now, she considered Maddy to be like a daughter to her. Maybe that was why her heart was breaking for the younger girl. Maddy, along with her kingdom, has been through so much. When would there be an end?

Sage doesn't say anything. She simply keeps her distance from Maddy, giving her the space and time that she needs until Maddy realizes that they weren't a threat. The battle two years ago had destroyed her finest allies. While Sage had attempted to do some damage control, her efforts were nothing short of futile. Her people were broken, some more than others. This was something that even she couldn't fix.
"Give her some space" Sage orders Star calmly. "Honey, you need to breathe, deep breaths now, everything is okay," Sage tells Maddy now, she keeps her voice calm, hysteria was the last thing they needed right now.

It wasn't even a question. Both boys nod.
A flicker of excitement flashes in Asher's dark eyes. This is was he has been waiting for, a moment just like this. Sure, a part of him wanted to save Maci. She was his only family afterall. But a much darker part of him was rising up to the surface. All he wanted was revenge. This was his chance to get it
Jaxon on the other hand, had much more pure intentions. All he wanted to do was save Maci and help Phenix get his kids back. He was willing to do anything, even if it meant tearing through the Capitol and fighting every last soul to get to them. "We're ready" Jaxon confirms

It was most certainly a shocking sight to see. Even with Phenix's warning, nothing could've possibly prepared the two for what they were about to see. Derek looked more robotic than human, it was quite unnerving. Still, who were they to judge? They both respectfully nod back at him and shake his hand. Asher stays quiet, allowing Jaxon to speak.
"Are you expecting trouble?" Jaxon asks. "You seem a bit distracted."

Both Asher and Jaxon exchange worried looks. Even though Derek was on their side, they couldn't help but feel intimated by the situation. Just how powerful is this guy? They both seem to wonder as they follow Phenix onto the train and look around for Derek.

It didn't take long for Max to arrive at the station. Especially considering the fact that she was driving over the posted speed limit. She wasn't fooling anybody when she decreased her speed while pulling into the station. The speed limit is nothing but a recommendation she'd usually say.

She can't help but stare up at the magnificent building in front of her. Many years ago, she felt a sense of awe when she looked at the building. Now, she felt an unexplainable feeling towards it. She felt like her job was holding her back. She should be out on the streets, trying to find out who was taking these Gifted people. Instead, she was forced to work. One can't properly investigate without having a bit of cash to rest on.

"You're a bit late Max" a familiar voice calls.

"Late?" Max asks, turning around to throw a forced glare at Marcellus. "I'm actually-" she pauses to roll up her sleeve and glance down at her watch. "Eight minutes early."

"That's three minutes later than usual" Marcellus points out. "Is everything okay?" His tone was light, but his question was honest. Max doesn't respond to it, instead, her eyes fall to her feet. Silently showing how defeated she felt.

"Seventy-two people have gone missing now. Yet there hasn't been any evidence left behind. I don't understand how this is possible" Max admits. She knows without having to see that Marcellus is ever so cautiously moving towards her. "I mean, I would think that there would be some sort of evidence by now! A witness, a fingerprint, a fallen object, or clothing! But there's nothing!" She glances up at Marcellus, her frustration plain on her face. "I'm worried we'll never find them."

"We'll find these people soon Max. You'll just have to patient" Marcellus answers with a measured tone. It was the same thing he told her every time someone went missing. "Keep your head up Max, you can't help these people with that mindset." He adds.

"You're right" Max replies with a sigh. "Well, we should get into work. We aren't being paid to stand around. What do you think the boss will assign me to today? Traffic duty again? Or maybe I'll be stuck doing paperwork?" She asks as the two walk towards the building.

"Don't complain about those duties, you did that to yourself remember?" Max cringes at the memory. They were working on a robbery at a local market when the suspect ran away. Max decided to chase after him while using her wind powers. Needless to say, she caught the suspect, but her wind had cast a few tables aside, causing a bit of property damage. Max opens her mouth to argue with him but closes it when he adds: "you're lucky you haven't been suspended yet." She couldn't argue against that.

Jaxon nods his head as he listens to Derek. This definitely changed things and gave them the upper hand. Jaxon was starting to feel more and more confident about them succeeding in this plan. But he wasn't willing to expect a win quite yet. One should never underestimate their opponent.

"I'm beginning to like him already" Jaxon replies with a smirk. "So how does he fit into our plan? Will he be with us at the Capitol?" Four people, even three could look pretty threatening. If Derek was going to join them, then the smart thing to do would be to let Derek and Asher stay behind when they talk to members of the Capitol. Jaxon decides not to voice his thoughts quite yet, not until he figures out where Derek fits in all of this.
