Jack reached the doors of the temple and paused, unsure of how to proceed. It would be more along his lines to blow them off their hinges, but he felt that wouldn't be appropriate. It would also seem somewhat stupid to knock and then have a group of Immortals shuffling their feet on the doorstep. He compromised by knocking twice and then opening the door.

"You know, I would have told you to come in if you had had the courtesy to wait another second." A feminine voice said. There was a woman bent over an altar, bandaging the leg of a young child lying on it. Next to her was a collection of herbs and a bowl of water, as well as two cloths. Her face was marked with elegant, light blue tattoos. Her robes were simple and baggy, a faded red.

"The Crawler attacked us yesterday night and I'm quite busy looking after these people." Her command over the Order Common was impressive. Jack glanced around. The interior wasn't too extravagant. The walls had murals on them. There were two smaller chambers to the left and right. Beyond the altar, there was a door with a veil in front of it. Through the light fabric, he could just make out prone figures beyond.

"Was the attack bad?" Jack asked.

"No worse than usual. It's always playing with us. At least it didn't kill anyone this time around." The woman replied, cutting the bandage. With a few sharp words, she sent the child waddling away to the back room. With that, she turned to the group and crossed her arms, leaning against the altar.

"Why are you here?" She asked, her eyes flickering from one person to the next. If she was surprised, she did well not to show it.

"No, he does not often concern himself with matters of other realms. He must be very worried." Jack replied. With slight hesitation, he sheathed the Sword of Aeons and moved forward. They walked down a road, the houses on either side seemingly deserted. There wasn't a soul in sight. After a few minutes of walking, they came to a large sqaure. There was a large pillar in the middle, made of a sandy-coloured rock. There seemed to be a few stalls here, small wooden constructions using pinned up cloths to provide shade. There didn't seem to be anything for trade. Off to the right, there was a huge set of stone stairs, leading up to what looked like a temple. Other roads lead off the square, presumably deeper into the city.

His head turned slowly from side to side, taking all this in. After a moment's thought, he began striding towards the steps.

Jack considered for a moment. "Your presence would be very much appreciated." He nodded. He turned to Redwood. "You are, I'm sure, aware that your usefulness here is... limited. Would you like to be taken with your men or taken back home?" He asked.

"Hold on, I'm on a mission-" Redwood started. He quietened down when he saw literal sparks fly from Jack's eyes. His magic was returning quickly. If Jack had decided that Redwood wasn't staying, then he wasn't.

"Take me to my men."

The King nodded. "Then I shall take my leave. I hope that you are met with success."

Both the King and Redwood disappeared.

Quite suddenly, they were out of the woods. However, they King didn't break step and continued striding forward. After a minute or so, they stepped over an invisible boundry. One moment, a vast and featureless plain, the next, they were at the foot of a massive statue. It stretched towards the sky, depicting a fearsome looking man holding a shield and a curved sword. In either direction stretched what looked like a rockface, until Jack began noticing small things that suggested human construction. Holes in the rock for viewing. Neatly interlocking rocks. Between the statue's feet was a huge door. The King turned to the group.

"Aurora. These are a people under constant seige. They will be wary of you. But they also know best how to fight the Crawler and it's forces. How it works. They've long since been numbed to its illusions. Now, before I leave, there is one last order of business."

He turned to the B Company operatives. All but Redwood vanished immediately. Jack tilted his head slightly at that and glanced at the King. Redwood immediately brought his gun around to bear, and it exploded in his hands. The soldier went flying, in quite a few pieces. The King waved a hand and the pieces flew back together, leaving no evidence of what had been done.

"Where the hell did you take my men?" Redwood shouted after a moment.

"I've taken them back to the Void. The Corruption is in their souls. It can be extracted... with care." He turned to Naomi. "This one, however... the soul is pure, but the body is slowly being Corrupted. The people of Aurora have treated such cases before, with varying degrees of success. In the Void, we have very little experience with such cases. You may decide amongst yourself if you would like her to stay here or come with me. At that, you can also vote on the presence of this one." He gestured to Redwood.

"Rise." The King said dismissively. "We're not here to stand on formality."
He started walking. Jack followed.
"My King. The Crawler... how can we... it seems like it should be impossible to defeat it."
The shook his head and spoke up so that everyone could hear.
"It is no such thing. The Crawler is powerful, certainly. But I would like you recall where we are currently. We're in a world of its own making. It will be more powerful here."

Jack took a moment to think about this. "So we fight it on our own terms?"

"Yes."

"The luxury of choice is not one we have."

"At the risk of sounding naive, there is always a choice. Why did you go through here as opposed to around? Why walk when you could have flown? Your current restrictions are the humans that accompany you."

"Still here." Redwood muttered.

"A fact that I am acutely aware of." The King growled.

The appendages slowly snaked towards the group. Jack fired off a spell, but it had no effect at all. How were they meant to beat this thing? It was impossible.

Just as he was thinking that, the dark mists of the Soul Sight were lit up, a fiery red washing over the shadowscape. Jack whipped around. There, a monument of flame, beating back the darkness. It was nowhere near as big as the void, but it shone with a brilliant intensity. It was painful to look at.

The darkness drew back from the new source of light. Two lances of energy shot out of the fire and pierced the void. They stuck there for a moment before exploding.

Redwood leaned to steady himself against the sudden earthquake. The world had seemed to get brighter for a second and then it was back to normal, leaving him to suspect his imagination.

Jack watched the void draw back and disappear. He exited the Sight and whipped around to see what had saved them. He immediately fell to his knees upon seeing the muscular, masked figure.

"My King."

"Jack. Come. The Crawler is gone for now, but I think that I will have to insist upon escorting you out of this place."

They were nearing the edge of the forest. Jack knew it. How much damage had been done? Was it permanent? He quickly closed his eyes and once again used the Mask to see. As soon as the image filled his mind, he let out a cry and fell backwards. Ignoring the questions of B Company, he quickly shuffled back, pushing himself away from something with his hands and legs, while staring into seemingly empty space.

It was there.

The Crawler stood before him. But it's physical form had seemed small, fragile almost. But here...

The combined light of the group was nothing in front of it. It would be like comparing a speck of sand to an entire cliff. And it wasn't glowing brightly like the other souls. It looked like the darkness had spread through it, so that it was a nothingness in the fabric of reality, a void. Something that would consume everything. Something with an insatiable hunger.

The Crawler's soul shifted shape, growing long appendeges.

Look at them. Flawed. Mistakes. But the darkness is pure. Stable.

"Where the hell is that coming from?" Redwood asked, scanning the area with his gun while trying to keep an eye on Jack, who had gone completely motionless, still on the floor, still resting back on his hands as if about to start moving backwards again. The Mask hid his face, but Redwood knew raw terror when he saw it.

Jack closed his eyes and saw the world through the Mask. Souls glowed against a dark, misty world. Here were the other Immortals, positive beacons in the darkness. And here was B Company, mere candles by comparison. He observed them more closely. Deep in the light they emitted was a small dark patch. Tiny, but there. Only the Sergeant was missing it. He looked down at himself, seeing through his own soul. The darkness was there as well, albeit almost imperceptible. Curious. He wondered if he'd be able to see such small slivers against the blinding light of the other Immortals' souls.

Other than their own little group, there were no other lights piercing the mist.

He opened his eyes again. What he had seen had... disturbed him. The sooner they left the forest, the better. With that in mind, he swept in front of Redwood and set a furious pace.

I do believe that they will follow their Sergeant, for now. And the man is no fool. He knows what his men suggest is idiotic. However, his squad in particular do have a history of mutiny for personal gain. They attempted to steal two truckloads of gold from the military before they were assigned to Redwood.

Jack casually twirled the Sword while he walked, considering.

They should be okay for the time being.

Redwood glanced back at his squad. Those daft, panicking, little... they were like children. He shuddered slightly, thinking of what would have happened to them had the Immortals heard.

It didn't take them long to dispatch the enemies between them. Soon enough, the woods were silent once more.
"Sarge, a word?" Preston asked, moving away.
Redwood glanced at the others and followed him. He noted Jack staring at his hand. "What is it, Marlowe?"
"You saw what I saw in that fight, right?" Marlowe whispered.
"Not entirely sure what you're talking about."
"Respectfully sir, rubbish. This place is taking its toll on them." He dropped his voice even lower. "What do we do when they can't use magic at all? We have to move ahead on our own. It'll be quicker."
Redwood stared at him, his brow creasing.
"I've talked to the others as well. They're thinking the same thing."
"To hell with that." Redwood whispered. "We stick with them. We're almost out of here and, whatever you and the others night have convinced yourself, we're reliant on them, not the other way around. We don't run at the first sign of what may evolve into a problem. Now, I don't want to hear another word on this."
He walked away, presumably to take point, leaving Marlowe near the back.

Jack listened carefully, sliding his gauntlet over the edge of the Sword, which hummed slightly. The woods didn't seem to be effecting it. And the Soul Mask seemed fine. But they weren't magic, were they? One hardly considers forces of nature, earthquakes and storms, to be magic. And yet, in the current situation, so limited in their use. Discardable, almost. Jack paused, assessing his thoughths.

Ah.

He had been wondering what the Crawler was hoping to achieve via sending them through here. The creature sowed doubt and reaped the rifts that it caused. The humans were seeing them at their most vulnerable, and that scaed them.
And a scared human was a very dangerous one.

His feet worked on autopilot as he thought. At least they'd be out of here soon.

Redwood and his men had wordlessly moved ahead of Jack. He hadn't objected. His eyes were pulsing slightly as he turned his head from side to side, scanning the area. A couple of times, he stopped entirely to stare at a patch of darkness that appeared identical to the rest. He was doing just that now. Redwood waited patiently while the demon stared.

When the shadows burst out of the shrubbery, Jack was already swinging the Sword. It sliced five of them in half and they disappeared in smoke. However, they had them completely surrounded, fifty of them at least. Redwood saw lightning crackle between Jack's fingers, only for it to die out. He glanced at his fingers, confused. Then, his eyes flared up with rage and he drew the Sword of Aeons once more and, without hesitation, launched himself into the fray.

"Open fire, check your targets!" Redwood ordered. His men leveled their guns and unleased a storm of lead.

"I shouldn't think so." Jack said, peering into the darkness between the trees.
"Light..." He muttered.
"Hold it right there, card boy." Redwood said, then turned to his squad. "Sweets, tech is up again right?"
Sweetwater nodded.
"Right then." Redwood siad. He flipped a switch and the torch attached to his gun barrel turned on. His squad followed suit. The beams of light revealed nothing but more bramblem and trees. Jack shrugged. "The light was to be for your benefit anyways. Move quickly."
With that, he strode into the woods.

"That would be ideal, but I suspect..." Jack muttered, pressing a gauntleted hand against a tree trunk. Fire spread out from his palm and, in seconds, the tree was engulfed in flames. In a few seconds, however, the fire went out, leaving not a single scorch mark on the wood.
"... that if the Crawler wants us to go through the woods, it is through the woods that we shall have to go." He finished, curiously picking at a bullet hole in the trunk.

"Pass me your weapon." He said, gesturing at Sweetwater's machine gun. The soldier glances at Redwood, who nodded. Jack took the weapon and comfortably shouldered it, aiming down the sights. He fired off a short burst. Someone watching carefully may have noticed that the bullets all fell within a millimeter of each other. They thudded into the tree, piercing a hole clean through. Jack nodded, satisfied, and passed the gun back. He turned to Sliuril.

"The entire woods are draining. The longer we're in there, the less effective our magic will be. I also imagine that the trees will be next to impossible to damage with magic or the effects thereof." He turned away and flickered from his dragon form and then back.

"And, it would appear, completely fireproof. Quite possibly for the specific purpose of limiting dragons." He muttered, drawing the Sword of Aeons.

"Hold up." Redwood said. "They'll be draining you. How quick?"

"At an exponential rate, if I'm not mistaken. Each minute will drain our magic more than the last. If I'm correct, our magic will be entirely subdued within a day. Fortunately, we should be out of there long before then."

Should. he added mentally to Sliuril.

Redwood began picking off single targets as they began charging forward, but there were waves upon waves of them. The barrier intersected with the enemy lines and the squad opened fire in earnest. Jack shot off the vortex spell. A swathe of enemies was launched away, falling apart as they did. Haggard pulled out his shotgun and advances towards the barrier. The first of the trees were beginning to come through.

"A few more waves before there's a lull." Jack said.

Redwood glanced at him. That hadn't seemed too bad. There bad to be something else at play.

Jack muttered something and took his hands off the barrier. It flared for a moment and then slowly began moving forward. The rest of Redwood's squad broke through and added to the attack. Jack also began shooting off spells from one hand. With the other, he began charging up a vortex spell.

"The barrier will keep out gunfire and spells, but nothing else. They will began breaking through it once we hit the treeline. Be ready for that." Jack said, as the barrier continued to close the distance. It was only a dozen meters or so from the woods.

Jack nodded. He summoned a fireball and shot it into the mist. The glow disappeared almost immediately. With a sigh, he summoned another, larger one but kept it in his hand. With that, he stepped through.

"Hags, point." Redwood said, levelling his gun at the mist.

"Got it." The explosive expert said, walking towards the fog while aiming down his sights. The rest of the squad followed him.

Redwood broke the mist to find Haggard firing full auto while Jack held a magical barrier which was constantly lighting up as it was hit. Redwood looked past the two. There was a wooded area in front of them and there were both spells and gunfire spilling out of the trees. He could also see shadows flitting from tree to tree, waiting for the group to get closer. Jack was holding the barrier, so Redwood looked around. The ground and trees were lit, but there was no apparent source of light. The path went on for a while in either direction and then dropped off into nothingness. There was only darkness above the horizon. There was clearly only one way through.

Redwood aimed and began firing at the treeline.

Sliuril, shadows are approaching us. Jack said mentally.

"Sarge!" Sweetwater shouted. "Equipment's freaking out. It's showing a lot of cold patches up ahead."

Redwood looked from Jack to Sliuril.

"More illusions." Jack said. "And it will be a large one. We'll most likely all be in it together. And it's possible we're in for a fight in there."

He was barely done speaking when a purple-black wall appeared in front of them, stretching endlessly in all directions. Jack looked up, trying to see the top. Redwood peered at it.

"Looks like it's made of that same fog stuff."

Jack turned to the others. "Is everyone ready to head through? There could be anything on the other side."

The King of Blades sat on his throne and watched the group. His eyes blazed red behind his mask as he followed his progress on the Map Table, a massive, constantly updating model. They glowed as small points of light. As he zoomed in, their figures became distinguishable on one end of the desert, under the fiery sun. He could also see the path they would have to take. What he say didn't particularly instill confidence in him.

"They will die... as those who came before."

The King remained motionless.

"You can not stop the darkness. It lies in all of them just waiting to get out. Scrambling to consume the light. Scuttling through their souls. Crawling through their minds."

"You have no power here, Fallen One." The King said, turning around. The Crawler stood there, serrated mouth hung wide open, black eyes gazing at the King. It took a step towards the King. He felt it push up against his wards.

And continue pushing.

He was almost through before the King reinforced his defences and pushed the creature back.

"No power here." The Crawler mocked. "Perhaps. But ask yourself, my King..."

The King began charging up a spell, one that would obliterate this monstrosity, remove this stain from the planes of existence.

"how long will it remain that way?"

The Crawler disappeared just as the King fired.

Redwood pulled up the front with Jack, who had temporarily changed back to his human form, while his men stayed near the middle.

"You see anything out there?" Redwood asked.

"I assure you, if I see something, you will be swiftly informed." Jack replied.

Redwood decided not to push him. Part of him wanted to fall in besides Naomi but he didn't feel like that would be helping in any way.

(Same.)

Redwood paced while Jack watched carefully. As soon as Naomi confirmed she could see, Redwood stopped pacing, nodded once and turned to the sqaud.
"Sweets, you got a bearing on that monument?'
"Yes sir, but there's no sattelite data on it. I only have what's visual."
"I see."
Jack turned away from Naomi. "We should probably get going soon." He suggested smoothly.
