Jack fired off the Vortex spell, which cleared a swathe in through the square. He took advantage if the lull to reposition himself behind a monument, where he had a little cover. He could feel himself tiring out. But that didn't matter. What mattered was that the enemy was regrouping and beginning to attack again and this next Vortex spell needed to charge... right... now.

Growling in annoyance, he peeked around the monument and used a powerful Force Push to keep the shadows at bay.

Jack took the head off a Revenant and lifted himself into the air. From up here, only they could target him. He strengthened the wards around himself and started firing off spells. It seemed that there was no escaping an overwhelming use of magic. He started charging up a Vortex spell in one hand. With the other, he fired off bursts of energy which lit up the square.

Jack prioritised the Eyeless as targets. Perhaps the Revenants were more dangerous, but he needed to cut off the source. He palmed the sharpening augmentation in his swords and began swinging, cutting through shadows, blades and statues. He regretted that there really wasn't any strategy other than keep hacking until there was nothing left to hack at.

Jack felt the effects wearing off. When he knew that he could run out at any moment, he launched himself into the air. Sure enough, just as he left the ground, the mortal took temporary control. However, he didn't have much to control. More or less all he could do was flail about. By the time he reached the zenith of the jump, the Mask was reasserting its power. It was a Jack who hit the ground, causing a small shockwave that sent enemies in his immediate vicinity stumbling. Sword of Aeons in one hand, energy crackling in the other, he got to go work.

The Crawler observed from the shadows. Watching. Waiting. There was eevey possibility that tonight's raid would fail to kill them. It'd already thrown most of the shadows into the fight. It decided to let those left do their damage and not reinforce them any further. He knew the extent of his enemies. It could you with them. And the Crawler loved games.

Kat had issued the order for people to evacuate to the temple. They'd be able to find their way around the fighting, of that she was sure.

Jack was using the shadows the best he could, trapping groups of enemies in spheres and then crushing them within, using high velocity tendrils to skewer and cut them. Wherever he felt the enemies were the thickest was where he went. The near-invulnerability was intoxicating, but he could feel it draining away. And then there would be a lull of a few seconds before he could defend himself again. And it seemed that, in those few moments, he would be completely mortal.

That was a bleak thought.

"I... I don't think I can contact anyone from here." Kat said helplessly

The statue remained unharmed, the darkness around it absorbing the fire. It stood defiantly in the flames and raised its staff at Faith. Just as it was about to attack, Jack collided with it. At a considerable fraction of the speed of light. The impact made a large shockwave and the Revenant went flying. But, as opposed to being sent into orbit as per the laws of physics, it touched the ground only a few meters away. The other Remnant had noticed Jack and was walking over, staff in hand. Jack didn't hesitate. He turned to the fallen Remnant statue and used his Soul Mask. The Shadows flowed from the statue to Jack. The Mask's eyes spewed out darkness. He turned to the Remnant still upright just in time to catch a blast from the staff full in the chest. He didn't so much as flinch.

Tilting his head slightly, Jack summoned tendrils of darkness which wrapped themselves around the Remnant, tighter and tighter until the statue was crushed, enhanced strength and all. While he had been doing this, the Remnant he had partially drained had gotten up. It's punch to Jack's head acheived nothing but to shatter its own arm. Jack pivoted around and a punch to the center of mass caused the statue to explode into thousands of pieces. However, many of the Eyeless had possessed other statues. Several Remnants were converging on the temple and the fight in the square in front of it. Many of the Eyeless and Shadows were streaming down the steps leading to the temple. Jack used shadows to cut them down, but more kept coming. And he had no idea how long he could keep this up for.

Kat stepped outside. "What on earth is going on out here?" She asked.

A path cleared through the Shadows directly in fron tof the group and a single Eyeless approached the barrier. It was impossible to tell, but it seemed to be focused on Kat in particular. Then, it turned and walked down the steps towards the square. It approached the statue of a warrior, larger than life, and then disappeared.

After a few moments, the statue stepped off its pedestal, wreathed in shadows. It looked around, as if searching for something. Then, it slammed the butt of the spear it was holding into the ground. A spire of darkness rose from the ground to one side, obliterating a house. Howeverz it had seemed that it was empty. It moved on to other houses. Slowly, making sure that the group could see them, the other Eyeless, began heading down the steps, from where they could disperse across the city.

It was quite suddenly that the Shadows appeared at the barrier Sliuril had summoned. Most of them were normal Shadows. However, here and there, there were Eyeless mixed into the crowd. And it certainly was a crowd. Hundreds surrounded the temple. However, none attempted to break through, at least not with any real enthusiasm. Other than the few who prodded and poked, they simply stood there, watching. Waiting. They had all the time in the world.

I'll be fine. Jack replied. Is everything fine back at the temple?

Kat finished carving the last of the runes into Naomi's eyes. As soon as the last cut was made, she took a deep breath and sat back. After a moment, she stood up to put the knife and charts away properly. Now all that was left was for the SPARTAN to wake up in her own time. Kat walked into the back room and was pleasantly surprised to see how a good a job Sliuril and Elijah had done.

The two foes whirled around each other. Jack swept low with his sword while firing a spell off high. The Shadow flipped over the sword, caught the spell and launched it back at him. Jack rolled backwards just in time to avoid being hit and came up swinging the Sword in a wide arc. The Shadow, which had attempted to close the distance, stumbled backwards and Jack felt the Sword knick it. He pressed the advantage, going in for an upwards slash. The Shadow deflected in and pushed Jack away. He fell backwards and unleashed a targeted burst of energy, sweeping the Shadow off its feet. As it went down, it launched a trail of darkness directly at him. Jack was too slow to move out of the way.

It hit the Soul Mask. The Mask absorbed the energy. The eyes went from glowing red to letting off darklight. Slowly, he raised his arms to his sides. One by one, the stars in the sky were snuffed out, followed by the moon. Darkness flooded through the streets. And then Jack was gone as well. The townspeople of Aurora saw a dome of the purest black engulf part of the Old Quarter.

The Shadow whipped around, trying to find its target. But there was nothing to see. And then there was nothing at all.

Jack watched the Shadow disintegrate around his sword. The dome collapsed, letting in the positively vibrant light of the night sky. The glow in the eyes of the Mask faded to nothing. The man blinked the few times, and then gave a muffled yell, trying to remove the Mask from his face. But even as he fell to the ground, the red glow returned to the eyes of the Mask, and it was the Jack of Blades who picked himself up and dusted off his robes.

Jack was studying the reference charts the priestess was using when he felt his mental tether go taut and he was pulled back into his own body just in time to feel the the shadow blade scratch across his armour. He drew the Sword of Aeons and slashed through the two Shadows which had attacked him. There was another one there instead of red eyes, this one had none whatsoever. It seemed taller and bulkier than the other ones. They stared at each other in the deserted street.

Sliuril, he thought at the Elf, stay at the temple. There may be trouble headed your way.

The Shadow tilted its head and then lunged with amazing speed. Jack dodged and brought the Sword around in an arc, only to find the move easily parried. The two rivals moved apart and sized each other up once again. Jack suddenly fired off a bolt of energy which the Shadow deflected into a building. It closed the gap between the two and Jack was just able to raise the Sword in time to defend himself from a rapid series of blows. He thrust forward and the Shadow danced away once again.

This was going to be interesting.

Kat got to work on the other eye, looking up only to refer to her charts. She would be done soon enough, which was just as well. Her fingers were starting to hurt a little from gripping th knife so tightly to keep if perfectly steady.

Jack leant against a wall with his eyes closed, feeling the city move around him. He projected his conciousness from his body and sent it wandering through the city. It brushed past people, picking up their thoughts. He listened to Elijah play for a few minutes. He could have listened all day, but pulled himself away. He found Faith and then Glaurug. Then he moved through the temple. He observed the operation, pacing around, checking the runes. The priestess was unaware of his presence. And he technically wasn't breaking any rules. No one could reasonably say that he was inside the temple. He looked at the murals on the wall. They depicted the Dark Ages, when the Court had ruled the world. And, from the fires of that world had emerged the Crawler.

These people knew their enemy. They also knew that it was the Court that had enabled it's existence. He wondered if the blamed William Black as much as they did him.

"It is very likely that we will stay here through the night." The man said to Jack. "You may leave whenever you want." Jack nodded. He hung about for a couple of minutes and then quietly slipped away. He wound through the streets, in the general direction of the temple.

Kat was finishing up the runes on one eye. Everything seemed to be fine. If all went well, Naomi would wake up with her eyesight entirely restored. Perhaps even a bit better. She lifted the knife away for a second, took a deep breath, and started carving the last rune on that eye.

As the sun moved past it's peak in the sky, Jack moved with the man, as lead him down the streets. "We all have our own places of mourning. A stall. A door. A tree. Anywhere where a memory may live on." He explained. "But there are communal places as well."

The two emerged into a square. There was a monument in the middle of it, a man pointi g towards the sky. Around it, there were dozens of people clustered around. Maybe a hundred. Some carried candles. Some had flowers, rare in the desert. Many simply stood and remembered. There was no noise. Jack stayed near the edge of the sqaure, with his head bowed. Not many people noticed him. No one questioned his presence.

Kat nodded and gave Naomi some leaves to chew. She waited for the sedative to take effect and then carefully opened the SPARTAN's eyes. She pulled up a few reference sheets and, muttering a prayer, set to work with the knife, kneeling at Naomi's side.

Jack strolled through the streets. Many little things stood out to him. The doors were heavy. The windows were narrow and barred. Throughout the streets, there were small gray slabs, set into walls or the floor. Several of them had writing on them, others simply a mark. Monuments to the people who had fallen there. He stopped when he turned a corner and saw a man kneeling at one of the slabs. He kept a respectful distance.

"Please, friend. Come." The man said. Jack approached slowly. His eyes flared as he replayed what had happened.

"I'm sorry for your family, sir." Jack said, clasping his hands in front of him. The man chuckled and turned to him.

"Why should you be? You weren't here." He said.

Jack stared at his feet. The people here were tough. Resilient."I think..." Jack began. "I think I had a family once."

The two stood there silently. Eventually, Jack put a hand on the man's shoulder. "I won't lie to you. I'm a completely different creature from the man who had a family. But I still sometimes remember the pain. It won't leave us. So it is ours to leave it." He said. The man nodded. They both stared at the ground. Jack wondered why he was doing what he was. It occured to him that he was, in essence, here to help these people. Perhaps, here and now, this was the best he could do.

Kat stepped back, having inspected Naomi's eyes to her satisfaction. "Your friend did a good job. There's very little Corruption left. However, I need to draw it out. You risk it spreading otherwise. And the eyes are the windows to the soul." She walked over to a small box near the altar. From it, she withdrew a tiny knife, with a wickedly sharp blade.
"You shall have to undergo minor surgery. I'll have to carve runes directly onto the iris. Less than a millimeter deep, but it needs to be very precise. So, on that note, do you want to sit or lie down for this?"

Jack made his way through the streets. He noticed people peering out at him from behind walls and through narrow windows. He reached the temple, banged on the door and put the herbs on a slightly raised pedestal besides it. Then he looked around and launched himself onto the roof opposite and sat down, making sure no one else came by and decided to pick them up. He absentmindedly twirled a fireball around his hand.

Kat left Naomi's side and returned a few moments later with assorted herbs. "I have good news and bad news. The bad news is that, given the time and that it was the Crawler personally, your case is somewhat... complicated. The good news is that I have dealt with worse successfully. So you ought to be fine."

She laid out the herbs. "Painkillers, things to make the process more effective and something to help you sleep, should you want it later. Now, if I got get a look at your eyes."

"Yes. I suppose I was under the impression that mentioning Kat's name would get me the herbs for free." Jack chuckled, handing over his brooch while holding onto his cloak with the other hand. The merchant examined it and the rubies set in the gold. He nodded, satisfied, disappeared into his house. While he wa in there, Jack summoned a small shard which glowed slightly and used it to secure his cloak. After a while, the merchant returned with another, slightly larger bag which clinked as he put it into Jack's hand. Jack secured it somewhere under his cloak, ensured thay he had all the required herbs and turned to Glaurug.

"What about you?" He asked.

Kat nodded. "That'll be great. I'm sure you understand, these people are not just hurt. They're scardd. They need some reassurance as well." She turned to Naomi. "Let's see what we can do about you, then. Explain everything. Leave nothing out. Each case is different depending on how it happened. Affected area, if it was the Crawler itself or one of its Shadows, how long it's been."

Jack reached what could have been a marketplace.
"Kat sent me." He boomed. Slowly, door began opening. A man with a small, pointed beard approached him.

"What do you need?" He asked.

"Herbs. Healing ones." He shows the man the dried out ones Kat had given him. The merchant examined them shortly and nodded. He went back into his house and, after a few moments, emerged with a small bag. "Here." He said.

Jack received the bag and nodded his thanks. He was halfway down the street before there was a loud cough behind him. Jack turned around to see the merchant with his hand extended, palm upwards.

"I assume you know how trade works where you come from?" The man said.

Jack blinked. He had very little money on him as he rarely had any use for it. He also doubted he'd have the local currency. After a moment's consideration, his hand went to the brooch that held his cloak to his robes.

The woman stared at Sliuril for a long time. Eventually, she sighed.

"I shall look after your SPARTAN. I would have done it anyway. I'm just... in a bad mood. But if, perhaps, any of you have medical knowledge or, even better, are good with healing spells, I could use you in the back. Except you." She turned to Jack. The demon tilted his head to a side.

"Excuse me?" He asked smoothly.

"You can not stay in this temple for any extended period of time. If you really want to be useful, run down to the shops and grab me some more of these herbs. The people will come out if you shout that Kat sent you. Knock and leave them by the door when you have them." She said, tapping her foot impatiently.

Jack kept his head tilted, staring at her. Then he looked over at Naomi. After a moment of being completely motionless, he whipped around and, crimson cloak bellowing around him, set off down the stone steps.

Something flickered over the woman's face as she looked at Naomi. Anger, sadness, surprise, disappointment... whatever it was, it was gone in an instant. Jack watched her with a sort of mild interest. He silently mulled over their course of action if she decided to not help Naomi.

"I've seen the sort of help your people give us." She muttered, without emotion. Just a sort of... weariness. "You'll have lost your way in the desert. Or maybe you got hurt. You come begging to us for help with promises of salvation in return. And then... nothing." She sighed and shook her head, staring at the ground. After a moment, she looked up and, without moving at all, seemed to straighten up purposefully. "You claim you've come here to help us. Forgive my cynicism, but I assume it's not unconditional?"
