"Of course." Kat said. She looked straight at Elijah and gestures towards the kids. With that, she lead Glaurug into the empty room, pulled a veil across the door and turned to him.

"Yes?" She asked, crossing her arms and raising an eyebrow.

Jack stood at the steps leading to the temple, hands on his hips. This was stupid. The others were in there, doing gods knew what while he was stuck out here. It was a strange restriction. He idly wondered why the Priestess had singled him out specifically. He was okay with healing. He was sure they needed help up there.

Shaking his head, he sat down on the steps with a sigh.

Jack opened his eyes, pulling himself out of meditation. He got up and stepped away from the statue he had been resting against, brushing himself off. A few of the locals were looking at him, trying to not be noticed. Instinctively, Jack's hand felt beneath his robe for the pouch holding his coins. It wasn't there.

These people really weren't afraid of much, huh?

He shrugged and looked around. He identified the person who had taken it and walked up to them. It was a young boy, late teens perhaps, and he shrank back as the demon approached.

"There's a lot of money in the pouch you took." Jack growled. The kid was biting his lip, looking around for any means of escape. Jack had him cornered.

"Make sure you distribute most of it amongst those who need it."

Jack stalked off.

Kat continued.

"Black soon found the Queen of Blades. Their battle raised mountains and sunk continents. It lasted for a century in the Void, where time flows faster. They fought until there was nothing left in that area of the Void but a wasteland. And, in the end, the Queen fell.

But Black was weak. He was wounded, mortally so. He knew he could not hope to face the King of Blades. In addition, the Corruption that the Jack had put in him was growing. The man was withering from within. He returned to this plain of existence at the Tattered Spire. He clawed his way through the Necropolis. He staggered through the barren wastelands. He stumbled back to Aurora, begging for health.

The Elders brought him to the Temple and the Priestess at that time did what she could. But Black's recovery was not to be. The King of Blades was furious. So, from the Void, he sent the Knight of Blades to hunt Black down. The Knight charged through the land, flattening all in its path. A towering, armoured and helmeted figure, welding a sword the length of three men. The Knight found Aurora. It ripped through the city to the Temple. The Priestess fell. The Elders fell. Black tried to fight, but he never stood a chance. The Knight ran him through and took his gold pendant as a trophy.

However, when the Corruption within Black had realised it's host was dead, it had transferred to the pendant. The moment the Knight touched it, the Corruption moved to it. The Knight had much more power for the Corruption to feed off. It had a much former body that the Corruption did not have to worry about harming. The Knight was consumed in a matter of seconds. It should have returned to the King. However, with the Corruption, it found that the desert was much more appealing to it. And so, leaving death, destruction and shadows in its wake, the Crawler disappeared into the sands. And it terrorises us to this day."

She looked around. The children were silent, staring at the floor.

Kat glanced at Elijah but said nothing. She took a deep breath and began.

"During the reign of the Court, humanity burned. Our cities fell. Our warriors died. There seemed to be no hope. Even the Guild of Heroes had gone into hiding, hoping to ride out the storm. But not all of them were happy with this. One in particular, William Black, felt that Heroes should be doing more to defend the people. He left the Guild and moved from area to area, seeking people who would fight against the tyrrany of the Court.

His search eventually brought him to our city. He came in robes of royal blue, wearing a golden pendant and carrying a scythe. He asked our leaders how he may enter the Void to fight the Court. They directed him further, to the Northern Wastes. There, lies the Necropolis, the city in which all life was extinguished so suddenly, the dead still roam, unwary of what had happened. It is said that the city was destroyed by a mortal mage attempting to open a portal to the Void. Black sought out the soul of the mage and, after some time, he learnt of the Tattered Spire. A massive structure of the Old Kingdom that would grant the user a single wish. Unfortunately, the Spire had already been used. It was damaged. Black did not have time. So, he compromised. He took a company of mages to the Spire, where he got them to channel its power to open the portal to the Void.

Entering the Void, Black was met by the Jack of Blades. They fought for weeks, leveling towns and forests, but in the end, the Jack fell. However, he realised the potential of Black as an enemy, the threat he posed. So, before retreating, he put a sliver of darkness in Black's soul, one which would grow and consume him.

His first enemy defeated, Black went in search of the rest of the Court."

Kat paused, looking around to make sure she had the children's attention.

Kat sat back, exhausted. Without those immortals helping, she would have been entirely overwhelmed. The eldest and youngest had fallen asleep. But some of the children were restless. They'd start annoying people soon. That'd need to be taken care of soon. She sighed and got to work gathering them. A story would hold their attention. Realistically, it would have to be a pleasant story, to distract them. But she also felt that would be inappropriate right now. She needed something sobering.

"Gather around, children." she said. "Let me tell you a story about... William Black and the Court."

Jack nodded to Glaurug. "See that you do."

"Perhaps." Jack nodded. "But I remember a time when these people would bow to no one, were afraid of nothing. Back when the Court launched its attack on this world, this was the last area to fall. Time after time our forces were beaten back. I saw their anger. I saw their pride. I admired it. Now..." Jack sighed and shook his head.

"That Priestess of theirs. You have to convince her to rally her people. Take the fight to the Crawler. I'm not sure what sort of leadership system they run here now, but she holds power. Figure out how much. Right now, the Crawler is..." Jack paused and looked around. Then, he stared straight into Glaurug's eyes.

"The creature is immortal. I need you to understand me. Not immortal like you or me or Sliuril or the rest of them. We can't harm it. What the King did back in the forest... it was a literal god catching another one off guard. And not gods as we understand them. I speak of the Primal forces. I'm sure that had that altercation taken place on this plane of existence as opposed to the Crawler's, and the Soul Realm within that, this world would be nothing but an ember."

He paused for a moment, giving Glaurug a bit of time to understand.

"A creature like the Crawler... it was not born as it was. It was created. It will have to source it's power somewhere. And, considering how active it is here, its reasonable to assume the source must be in this area. Obtain the trust of the Priestess and figure out where it is."

Jack nodded at Glaurug and sat down, back against a statue.

"Look at these people." He gestured back to the temple. "This place used to be the center of all activity in the Northern Hub. The biggest city in the region. At one point, the biggest in the world. That was before the rise of the Old Kingdom, further north. There were five guilds in this area alone."

He sighed and looked around at the destruction, highlighted by the early morning sun.

"Now look. They can't step outside for fear of being consumed by the shadows. What kind of life is that?" He muttered, absentmindedly weaving a small orb of fire between his fingers.

8/10

Short and sweet. I like it. I'm on phone, so maybe it's just me, but the panel layout seems a bit weird.

Jack nodded. He could wait until things had settled down a bit. People would need some time to mourn. But then he would need to bring up how to destroy the Crawler once and for all. Perhaps it wasn't a topic people would want to talk about so soon after an attack. One would imagine that anger would fuel these people in trying to destroy the creature, but a lot of them just seemed... resigned.

Kat ran from person to person, trying to cater to everyone's needs. A few people with medical knowledge were helping her, but the sheer number of people that required their head threatened to overwhelm them.

"I have heard nothing to the contrary. And making a plea would require me to step into the temple grounds, so I don't really see a way out of this one." Jack shrugged. "I suppose I'll be in the square in front of the temple, should anyone require me."

He began strolling back towards the square, casually swinging the Sword. The Soul Mask was glowing a bit. The horizon wa beginning to brighten very slightly.

"I agree. Let's go." Jack said. He picked up his cloak, fastened it and then turned to Glaurug. "Back to the temple or somewhere else?" He asked.

Kat was rushing from person to person, trying to cater to everyone's needs. A few of the people with medical knowledge had joined her in helping, but even they were starting to show signs of stress. It was made worse by the multitude of inconsolable babies cryin through the hallways.

"Thank you." Kat said. "I'll see to them immediately. Please, see what you can do about the poeple trapped in the building." With that, she moved off to assist the two women.

Jack looked at the new situation. This one wasn't nearly as easy. For one, there probably wasn't enough air trapped in there to move the rubble. And, even if he had the energy to do so, levitating the blocks away would be risky. So then what?

"Have you heard..." Jack said, removing his cloak, "of the Northern Monks? A delightful bunch. But their discipline is one to take very seriously. You see, they have a modicum of control over time. They keep it, they move it around, they make sure it doesn't accumulate in one place and cause any disturbances. It's all very fascinating. Now, I never got to study under them but I do believe that I understand the theory."

With that, he picked up a small pebble, cleared his mind, and let it drop. He thought of time as a single stream, moving in one direction.

He split the stream. He did it again. And again. It went on like this for a while. He kept doing it until it was slightly hard to breathe, the air molecules moving too slowly to give the usual impression of being everywhere at once. When he opened his eyes, the rock was suspended in the air. It was moving, but imperceptibly so. Jack wa moving in a greater time frame. That meant that he had a massive acceleration. And, by extension, it meant that he could exert great amounts of force with very little effort. He approached the rubble and carefully picked it apart. Dust hung in the air, casting a haze. He gently tapped at the collapsing ceiling and watched it fly away for a few seconds, only to slow down and then stop altogether. He couldn't risk touching the people, in case he inadvertently pulverised every bone in their body. Instead, he just cleared the area and went back to where he had been standing. With a deep breath, he moved back up the stages of time.

It looked as if the rubble that had been trapping the people had just decided to explode. Jack cast an extremely weak shield around the people, just to protect them from any stray shrapnel.

"Yes, yes, I don't doubt it." The demon replied equally unenthusiastically. He looked around and shrugged. He might as well see if he could help any more.

"I'm going to tag along with you. Not like I'm doing anything else." He told them.

Jack walked around the rubble, looking at if from every angle. He completed the full circle and crossed his arms, head slightly tilted.

"What constitutes acceptable casualties?" He asked.

"Sorry, that was in bad taste." He added after moment.

He concentrated on the points where the pieces of rubble met. He felt the air to see how much space the civilians had. There were a lot of ways to approach it. He went with the simplest one. He created a vaccum around the rubble, leaving the air pocket the survivor's had where it was. The rocks flew outwards and there was a clap of thunder as new air rushed in. The survivors would be a bit out of breath, but otherwise unharmed.

Jack nodded. The Revenants had presented an interesting and, more importantly, entirely new, problem for the group. "I'd be glad to help." He said. "Just point me in the right direction. I'm sure I can still lift some rubble."

He wasn't all that sure, but like hell he'd admit it in front of everyone. He was having to ask the others for the survivor's location because he was to weak to use the Soul Sight that the Mask offered. Oh well. If push came to shove, he could always change into his dragon form and push the rubble aside.

"... a few thousand." Kat replied eventually. She began biting her lip again.

Jack saw Glaurug and Elijah emerge from the temple. He floated over to them.
"What's new?" He asked, offhandedly.

Jack bent down, hands on knees, breathing heavily. It had certainly been an interesting night. If he had needed sleep, he was pretty sure he would have gone to find somewhere to doze off. As it was, he remained in the same position for a few moments, strained up and dusted himself off. He started walking up the temple steps, then remembered what Kat had said and did a 180 degree turn. No use aggravating the locals. He quietly sat down on a rooftop, knees brought up to his chin and arms wrapped around them, looking out over the city.

Kat glanced at Elijah and sniffed. "I-I guess. Thanks." She stared at her feet. "Do you- do you know how many made it to the Temple?" She asked eventually.

All that was really left was to kill any stragglers. There were only a few Revenants and Eyeless left. In front of them, the regular Shadows didn't really pose a threat. The two Vortex spells had exhausted Jack, so he simply strolled towards enemies with his Sword, beating back anything that decided to attack him.

Kat looked up at Elijah. "I... I'll be fine." She kept looking at him for a moment, then shifted her gaze to her feet. "It's just that... they're my people. My responsibility. And then all of this happens. I turn to others for help and they betray me. And I try to be strong for them but I just feel..." her voice cracked and she buried her face in her hands.

Jack just about dodged the spear of a Revenant, only to be thrown aside by another one. He quickly it to his feet and pulled up a shield around himself. The Shadows clustered around it, trying to break through. He felt the impacts, felt them fegin to break through, felt the shield fall...

The Vortex spell was ready.

Jack jumped into the air and fired it straight downwards. It annihilated everything directly below him and then spread out, killing and disorientating enemies in the entire area.

Kat was sitting with her eyes closed and her hands clasped in front of her face, biting her lip. She rocked gently back and forth. She wasn't praying, simply worried. Every now and then, shed glance up at a particularly loud sound from the battle aside, only to go back to her previous position.
