"Now, Kat. We need a favour of you. I appreciate that your people are fighters. Send a group south. Contact an outpost there. It might be under Order or Chaos control, it doesn't matter. Convince them to send reinforcements to Aurora. Spread the word about the Crawler." Jack said.

"And what if they don't help?" Kat asked.

"Tell them the Court sent you. Threaten them with the murder of their children in their beds for all I care. Get those reinforcements. I'll be surprised if the Crawler doesn't attack while we're up north. Faith will, presumably, have to stay here. Anyone else who wishes to stay is more than welcome to. In addition to that, I expect Naomi will be rearing to help when she wakes up. Just... make sure you have all the support you require here."

The King stood up and leaned over the table, looking at the map. He jabbed a finger at it.

"Archon's Folly. There's a large cache of magic there, and it's only an hour or so out of our way when we leave Snowspire. We should tap into it. It'll certainly come in useful when we work our way through the Necropolis."

Jack nodded and stood up. "I'll try to keep it brief. Of course, the King and the Queen know how the Crawler was made. For anyone present who does not, it is the former Knight of Blades which has been consumed by the Darkness, which was something I introduced into this world. This is after the reign of the Court, naturally. Now, the Crawler is gathering power. It grows stronger. It's already more dangerous than anything we've ever seen before. At any moment, it could launch a fevestating attack on this world, one that we would never recover from. We must stop it."

Jack paused for breath and looked around. The King and Queen both seemed to be listening I'm that distracted manner they had. Death was entirely motionless. Kat was biting her lip, but also listening. Jack approached the table to use the map. He used his magic to move a few levers on the wall. The map seemed to draw back, move around and then focus on a snowy land.

"We need to limit the Crawler's power. To the north, in the Wastes, lies the Necropolis. In it lies the Tattered Spire. In there, an artefact of great power is stored. We believe that that is what is giving the Crawler power."

"So we destroy it." The King said.

"Easier said than done. Neither the Spire nor the Necropolis can be teleported into. In fact, the closest place we can teleport to is a hidden Cullis Gate on the southern coast of the Wastes. We would have a day's walk to Snowspire Village an then several hours from there to the Necropolis. The entire area is extremely dangerous, with the notable exception on Snowspire. It lies under the protection of the Snowspire Oracle, the four Demon Doors. We should aim to confer with them about the Crawler."

Kat sat down and then stood up again as Sliuril entered. Jack arrived a moment later, as the King sat down. He looked around.

"Just waiting for the Queen and the Shade then?" Jack asked, taking a seat opposite the King.

"So it would appear." The King said, tapping his fingers on the the table, studying the map beneath the glass.

It wasn't long before the Queen arrived, deep in conversation with Death.

"I can not make any promises." Death said as they entered.

The Queen looked around and went sat down next to the King. Death made no movement to come any further into the room, and stood besides the door.

The King nodded. "I'll be there. And..." The King sighed, "I suppose that, as long as I'm here and working with this little group, you of all people can drop the formalities."

Jack acknowledged Sliuril with a promise to be there. He began walking into the depths of the Temple.

Kat nodded. "Come on, then. I assume your friends will find their own way?" She lead Elijah through the halls. The Temple was much bigger than it appeared, as most of it was hewn out of the stone of the mountain behind it. The front was limited, but the architects had really expanded it on the inside of the mountain.
Eventually, they reached a door. Kat stepped through, and was surprised to find Faith already there.

"A War Room? Well... I suppose there is the Sanctum. We could meet there. It's at the back of the Temple, set into the mountain. The High Council used to convene there when planning against the Court. The floor is a very handy map of very handy map of the area, layed over by glass. A system of levers on the wall allow you to focus on certain areas." Kat said.

The King looked around the Temple, while Death found somewhere to stand ominously. The clink that the King's metal boots made as he walked echoed along the hallways, louder than it had any right to be.

Jack, Death and the King strode towards the Temple. Jack watched the sun sit unsurely on the horizon for a moment, decide to make a run for it, and begin rising. So they had another day, at least. That was good. They could bring the Court up to speed and decide on a plan.

"Thank you." Kat nodded to Elijah.

The King and Jack were clearing up, with help from Death. The Queen arrived at the Temple and looked around, feeling the souls around her. She hummed an airy tune to herself, high and haunting. It made Kat shudder as she passed. The Queen knelt over one of the patients, closed her eyes, opened them and then moved on, still humming. The patient began breathing a bit easier almost immediately.

Kat sighed and nodded. "There certainly is. Well, I'm going to go check up on some of the patients if anyone needs me." She said.

Jack sat up when he saw Death appear in front of him.

"Why aren't you back at the Void?" He asked.

"Death can be in many places at once." The King and Death chorused.

"Of course." Jack muttered.

"Yes, I decided you needed as much help as you could get."

Kat blinked. "That's... good? I guess. I suppose the Crawler shouldn't be that much of an issue for them." She tried to make it sound like a statement, but she was asking and she knew it.

Jack stretched. He and the King had repaired quite a lot of the Western Quarter of the city and they both sat on a plinth, leaning back.

"I'm quite surprised you agreed to come." Jack said.

"I'm surprised you agreed to ask." The King turned to him. "It's interesting how invested you are in destroying the Crawler."

"I suppose I feel somewhat responsible."

The King nodded.

(A fork.)

"I allowed Jack and the Court access to the Temple and any discussions we have about defeating the Crawler in return for their protection of the city." Kat shrugged. "Why? Did I do something wrong?" She asked.

Jack walked besides the King. Where they walked, the rubble shoes away, seemed to somewhat apologetically slump back into standing structures.

"You have Death watching the Court?" Jack asked eventually.

"Of course. One can always count upon Death." The King replied plainly.

"Oh, bloody hell, was that a joke?" Jack asked.

The King was silent.

"Because... I'm not sure, humour doesn't seem to suit you."

"I'm hurt."

The Queen smiled and, though she knew the gesture would be lost beneath the mask, hoped her eyes would convey it.

"It's my pleasure. I let the boys play their war games. I suppose they have something to gain from it. Personally, I lean towards support magic, healing, along with a more... subtle approach to combat. If the King is a hammer, I am a knife. And Jack... a fork perhaps."

Jack tilted his head. "Is that so?" He asked, amusement in his voice.

"Indeed. Now, be a dear and go help the King clear up. We can all meet at the temple in a few hours."

"Indeed." The King muttered. Death disappeared, presumably back to the Void, leaving the Blades.

The King strode off towards the temple, idly waving his arm here and there. Pieces of buildings flew back together. Monuments repaired themselves. Only the Revenant statues were left unaffected.

The Queen watched him go, then turned to Glaurug and Elijah.

"The King is a bit preoccupied right now. I do believe he meant to return your bow." She said.

I didn't.

"He meant to return it." The Queen insisted in a slightly raised voice so that the King could hear her.

Jack watched, bemused, and turned to Kat.

"You sure you know what you're dealing with?" He asked.

Kat straightened up. "I'll do what I must for my people's safety."

Jack nodded.

"Well, Jack here decided to lure me out to talk to me. So I told him that... wait, where did he go?" Kat asked, having turned to look at Jack and finding nothing.

Jack chose this moment to reappear, the rest of the Court with him. The King stood in front, towering over the Priestess by a good three feet, the Queen standing by his side. Jack and Death stood behind them.

"You told him to get us, yes?" The King growled. The Queen held him back, slender fingers tightening around the King's shoulder. He glanced at her and gently brushed he hand off. With a deep breath, the King looked around. Jack heard him mutter something like "...not much left to defend..."

He turned to Kat. "You have your protection. Now, will you cooperate?"

Kat had been completely motionless during this entire sequence of events, eyes wide. She took a moment to compose herself.

"The Jack kept his end of the deal, I shall keep mine." she said, eyeing Death somewhat nervously. "You will all be allowed inside the temple."

Jack nodded at Sliuril when she arrived. Kat looked at her.

"What happened?" She asked. "Is everything okay?"

Jack glanced at Sliuril and shrugged.

I'm headed to the Void real quick. You might notice me flicker. And I may have company upon my return.

With that, he slipped into the Void.

He arrived on one knee, head bowed, in front of the three thrones. His, on the left, was empty. The one to the right was occupied by the Queen of Blades, her plain white mask with high cheekbones completely featureless, sitting straight upright with her hands folded in her lap. The King sat on his throne in the middle, leaning back. Death was standing in the shadows in a corner, leaning on his scythe, eyes glowing.

"Jack." The King rumbled.

"My King." Jack replied.

"I trust everything goes well in the hunt for the Crawler?"

"I may need some assistance in that matter."

The King tilted his head, causing Jack to shudder very slightly. He was sure that, had the King wished, that tilt could have annihilated Jack.

"I was under the impression that I extended quite a lot of help beating back the Crawler in the forest."

"Indeed, my King. But the Aurorans are being uncooperative. I require their cooperation and, quite importantly, their warriors if we are to defeat the Crawler and his Shadows."

"You would like me to... convince them?" The King asked, leaning forward.

"In a way, King. Their Priestess, Kat, promises her cooperation in Aurora comes under the Court's personal protection until the Crawler is defeated."

The King sat back and the Queen turned to look directly at Jack for the first time.

"They demand this of us?" She asked.

"No, not demand. But that is the cost of their cooperation."

"If I could contribute," Death said, stepping forward, "it certainly wouldn't be too difficult for us to manifest there for a short duration. The war here is over. The Void is secure. Venturing the other realms and helping with problems there, especially problems like the Crawler, could send a message. That the King is still strong."

"I don't think anyone doubts that, Death." The Queen replied.

"And yet, the King would receive a lot of support if he was involved in the destruction of the Crawler. You have many loyal people here. They will hold the fort in your absence."

The King rested his chin on his fist, thoughtful.

(What was hilarious?)

Jack decided that it was time. He made sure the Square was clear and, with a deep breath, he activated the illusion.

Kat looked up as she heard the roar and rushed outside when she heard the screams. She stood at. She stood at the top of the steps and looked out over the square where the dragon was rampaging. There was an old man at the bottom of the steps, trying to get to the temple. As she watched, he stumbled and sprawled across the steps. Kat immediately began descending as quickly as possible. That was all that Jack needed. He dropped the illusion and brought up wards, trapping Kat out of the temple.

"I want to talk to you." Jack said.

Kat frowned, composed again. "I have nothing to say to you, demon."

"Now, really. What have I done to deserve that?"

"Oh, let me see. How about the mass murder of my people?" Kat shouted.

Jack fell silent. Kat stared at him, fuming.

"Well?" She asked.

"That wasn't me. Well, it was. The Crawler is... basically the Court's fault. I can't deny that. But that's not me anymore. You and I, we want the same thing right now. I've always admired the Aurorans. I want to help. Let me. And for that, I'll need to be part of making plans with you."

It was Kat's turn to be silent.

"I'm dropping the wards now." Jack said. "You can leave, if you want." He did as he said.

Kat stood there. "You can enter the temple on a condition."

"And that is?"

"You get the King of Blades to personally extend his protection to Aurora until the death of the Crawler."

Jack blinked.

"I... I can't guarantee that."

"Try. You saw what the Crawler can do. Sliuril and Faith aren't here. I don't think you three will be able to keep us safe."

"For the record, you are inviting the Court into your city?"

"For protection only, yes."

"I'll see what I can do."

Kat gave a half hearted wave back. Faith was missing? Sliuril was worried? She bit her lip thoughtfully.

Good. That's settled. And Sliuril... ESSENTIALLY agreed to this. Practically. By not being here to stop me. That being said, you really should be glad that there's someone taking action against this discriminatory behaviour against immortal and technically evil demon lords. Jack thought to them.

It's, like, a really big issue.

He decided that the illusion was sufficient. He enabled it for a moment to check. He was bombarded with sound and the world shifted around him... but only him. He'd wait for the sun to get lower in the sky before he put his plan into action.

Kat barely had time to register what was going on before Sliuril disappeared. She looked around.

"... Okay." She muttered. Well, it was only an hour. There wasn't really anything to worry about in that time frame.

Jack whistled to himself while he worked. Fact was, he needed to talk to the Priestess. He was sure that the others would eventually be able to convince her and rally support. But that needed to be done as quickly as possible. Besides that, he felt somewhat leftout and a bit useless. It wasn't a nice feeling.

He just needed to lure her out of the temple. He was counting on how much she cared for her people. A simple illusion should be enough on that front.

I'm going to pull a bit of a stunt. he thought to the others in the temple. Either I'll convince the Priestess to let me in or I'll be banished from the city. Either way, don't interfere. It shouldn't take too long.

He continued setting it up.

The kids went into a huddle, a few of them glancing over at Elijah every now and again. Eventually, one of them came forward. "Play it, please."

Jack nodded. "I certainly will if she decides to leave the temple. And, if I think there is sufficient reason to do so, I won't hesitate to go in there. And do inform the others before you leave. The Priestess especially. And don't tell her when you intend to be back. Either that, or tell her that you will be back much, much earlier than you actually will be." He said, crossing his arms.

"City? That'd be either Snowspire or the Necropolis. And a tower?" Jack thought for a moment.

"It could be the Spire. That's very close to the Necropolis. And..." He paused. "I suppose... it might make some sense for the Crawler to house its source of power there. The Spire is destroyed, but it's still flowing with magical energy. That would help it set up a very effective defence against people trying to destroy the source." Jack continued.

Kat nodded at Glaurug, tried for a smile that ended up a grimace and stepped out of the room.

Kat sighed.

"Your help here is what saved the city tonight. It is deeply appreciated. I understand he saved some of our people. You can thank him on my behalf for that. However, we would not need to worry about any of this if it wasn't for the Jack. So, while I may not personally have any history with him, he is indirectly responsible for the repeated murder of my people. The temple is a holy place. It's a sanctuary. How do you think people would react if I let what is, in essence, the enemy roam it freely? You say he is good at healing. Your other friends' help has been tremendous.... and sufficient. Honestly, I see no reason to allow him in. I'm sorry if he feels... weird or awkward... not getting his way." She said.

Jack stood up. "What's the source of power? To the north? There's nothing to the north, it's a wasteland. The ruins of the Old Kingdom. I mean, there's the Bronze Gate, Snowspire Village, Archon's Folly and... well, there's the Necropolis."

The children tired of the green constructs and stared up at Elijah, apparently with the sole purpose of making him uncomfortable. Their gaze would periodically switch to his flute and then back to his face.
