"Move up." The King said, urgency creeping into his voice. There was still a long way to go to the Spire and the path was sure to be a difficult one. They couldn't afford to be fought to a standstill. The King began charging up a powerful spell. Within seconds, it was ready. He fired it, a single continuous stream of energy which cut through the enemies. In the temporary lull, he sprinted forward. The Queen and Jack followed suit.

But it wasn't long before more Summoners began stepping into the road.

Death was losing. He knew it. The Crawler fought ferociously, skillfully. Each time he parried a blow, he needed to be anticipating where the next one would come from and get his scythe into position. And all the while, the mad laughter. There wasn't much chance of hitting the creature back now. He'd just have to keep blocking for as long as he was able.

Hunter frowned as he approached the town. Something was off. He strained to see through the fog, trying to figure out what it was. A few Pokémon milled about aimlessly. How strange. It didn't take him long to notice the lack of humans about. When he did glimpse a fe, they were out cold on the ground. The trainer's residence loomed up to his left, looking somewhat intimidating in the fog. He decided to head towards the fountain in the town square to see if there was anyone there.

Jack pulled on the reserves he had absorbed at the Folly and began firing shards towards the armour joints of the closest one. The creature threw its head back. It wouldn't be inaccurate to say that it screamed, but the sound didn't seem to come from it. It simply existed. Jack took a moment to glance towards the Queen. She was engaging one of the Summoners up close. The Summoner swung it's massive sword with astounding speed, but the Queen was nothing but a blur. Within seconds, the Summoner fell to its knees with one of those non-screams. It's eyes began glowing brighter and...

"Of course they explode on death." Jack muttered as the Queen landed besides him. She quickly got to her feet and engaged another one.

The King was attacking up close with his sword and using magic to support himself. He used a spell to hold the Summoner's sword and then lunged his own deep into the joint between the chest plate and the neck. Another spell was used to contain the ensuing explosion, which he launched at a group of the red ones. Those three exploded as well, taking another one with them. Jack noted that. Clusters could be exploited. But now the red ones fired their first volley of spells. He brought up a shield and felt the powerful impacts. It was only with a last second reinforcement that the barrier held.

Death was about to strike again but felt the Crawler pick him up and throw him to a side. He hit a wall and cried out, feeling bones crack. With a grunt, he healed them and got back up, calling his scythe to him. At least his back was against a solid object now.

Kat watched the Shadows flow down the dunes and towards the city. This was it, then.

"Perhaps." Jack muttered. Suddenly, a creature stepped out into the path ahead of them. It was large, taller and broader than the King. It wore heavy, blue armour everywhere other than its head, the bottom half of which was obscured by wraps. The upper half was just a skull, but the eyes glowed blue. In one hand, it wielded a bloodstained broadsword, long as a man. In the other, a spell was charging.

The creature dropped to one knee and fired the spell into the ground. The ensuing shockwave knocked Jack off his feet and even the King took a step back. More of the creatures began appearing from alleys. Many were identical to the first one. Some had red, hooded armour and had no weapons, charging up an array of powerful spells.

"Summoners." The King spat. "Of course."

"How do you fight them?" Jack asked.

"Carefully. The armour is very nearly impenetrable. Aim for the joints. They'll mostly throw projectile spells, so you'll have a chance to dodge or redirect them. And watch the sword. They're very quick with them."

Death landed another blow and the Crawler roared, more in rage than pain.

Death blocked slash after slash, the sound of the impact ringing out through the blinding darkness of the cavern.

"You left them!" The Crawler laughed maniacally. "You left them to die!"

Death gritted his teeth and brought his scythe around once more through the darkness. He felt it impact and heard the Crawler hiss.

"They'll die by my leave, and only then." Death muttered. He pressed his assault.

The Shadows amassed on the dunes in front of the city. They moved noiselessly, not even disturbing the sand, but there was the impression of thousands of whispers. The sun had slipped below the horizon and the last of the light was bleeding out of the sky.

"Agreed." Jack nodded.

"Very well. There would appear to be a direct path." The King said, pointing it out. It was punctuated by areas of silvery light, where ghosts stood, heads bowed. A few Hollow Men stumbled around, but not enough to present any real threat. The Court began walking.

Jack narrowed his eyes. "This seems almost too easy."

"Hmm." The King agreed.

The Queen said nothing. She looked around, making sure there were no unpleasant surprises in store.

"Right," Lear said, stepping through the gate, "this is as far as I'm required to go. I hope you find what you're looking for. You're certainly not like the other ones that come by here."

With that, he turned and walked back to the main gate of the Necropolis.

Jack looked over the vast, snow-covered city. A maze of streets and alleys between the countless buildings. In the distance, a massive palace stood out, being constructed out of white marble as opposed to the black stone. The Spire was clearly visible.

"The glyphs will likely be in the palace. The pendant will be near the top of the Spire. How do we want to play this?" Jack asked.

Lear got back to his men.

"Well?" Al asked.

"I'll give them longer than the rest." Lear replied, lighting a pipe.

"An hour, then?"

Lear considered. "Make it two."

Death stood in the darkness, head bowed.

"You have come... to die?" The Crawler asked.

"Perhaps." Death said. He held the scythe diagonally, in a defensive stance. The first strike came out of nowhere. Death just managed to parry it and swung the blade around in an arc. Nothing. The skeleton sighed.

"You have come... to die." The Crawler stated.

Kat nodded. "Of course. I'll see to it."

"Well, ma'am, there's obviously the monsters, but none of my lads have problems with those." Lear said, a tad proudly. He lead them through the door and turned the corner, revealing a few houses, built of the same stones as the Necropolis wall. They were still in remarkably good shape. Behind the houses was another wall, with a smaller door. This was presumably an area where the Old Kingdom guards would have stayed and checked people entering the city. Through the doorway, Jack could make out the city, spreading into the distance.

"No, the problem... well, it's a bit hard to explain, but..."

At this moment, a woman, perhaps in her twenties, came through the doors of one of the houses. She didn't open the door and step out, she came THROUGH it.

"Good evening, Mr. Lear." The woman said. Her voice echoed slightly. Her pale form was transparent.

Lear hesitated. "Good evening, Amy. Husband home yet?"

"No. But he won't be long now. Went down to the markets just a few hours ago. Just a few hours..." She looked down, frowning. But she suddenly looked back up, smiling again. "Who are these? Visitors?" She asked.

Lear nodded. "They just wanted to look around the city."

Amy practically jumped up and down in joy. "Oh, you'll love it here! There are the bridges and the markets and the... the..." She looked down again, frowning as if she had forgotten something.

"Why don't you head back in, Amy?" Lear suggested softly. "You'll catch your death out here."

"Yes.. yes, thank you, Mr. Lear. I hope you enjoy looking around the city."

Still frowning, she walked back through the door.

Lear sighed and shook his head. "Fifteen years, I've been posted here." He muttered. "It never gets easier. The poor buggers don't even know they're dead. Most of them are just... lost or... confused, I guess. It's sad. Sets the lads on edge. There must be thousands of them in there. Millions. They'll only be seen when they want to, but they're in there, trying to live the city life the best they can. But some of them... they're angry. Very angry."

He sighed again and began walking forward. "I'll take you as far as the second gate, this one over here. The city proper is through there."

Death nodded. "I'll go try to find the Crawler, while there's still light in the sky. Only way I'll stand a chance to hold it off." With that, Death disappeared and reappeared in the Shadelight Cavern. If the Crawler went anywhere during the day, it was here.

"I can hold it, for some time. But not for too long. Certainly not till the dawn. If the Crawler decides to make an appearance, there's not a lot we can do." Death fell silent.

"Unless I go seek it out. Attack it away from the city. Hope to weaken it enough so that we are spared tonight." Death suggested. "In the end, we're just trying to buy time for the group up North. On the upside, there shouldn't be any Revenants. Just the Shadows and the Eyeless, which I'm confident you can hold off on your own."

The wall of the Necropolis strecthed upwards, blotting out the sky. The double doors were massive, almost reaching the top of the wall, occupying a space that fifty men could march through abreast. Closer up, Jack could make out how thick the wall was as well. You could comfortably fit several dragons into that space. Ten guards, kitted out in the Snowspire grey but with black trimming as opposed to blue, stood, dwarfed by the massive structure behind them. One of them held up a hand.

"I'm Captain Lear. This is the Necropolis. Don't want to head in there. Snowspire is an hour and a half back that way."

"We know what this is. Excuse me, why are you posted here?" Jack asked.

"Things try to leave the Necropolis from time to time. Balvarines, Hollow men... other things. We take care of them."

Jack noticed that there were several half buried Balvarine corpses and bones off to a side, away from the road, besides a row of three proper graves for the guards who had fallen. In the pile of corpses, Jack made out a large, heavily armoured hand. He wondered what that had once been.

"We wish to enter the Necropolis." Jack said.

"Looters, eh? Well, you're welcome to what you can carry, but be careful. You're not the first ones who came to the Dead City looking for treasure. But, if we see you again, you'll be the first ones to make it back."

He turned to one of the other guards. "Lead them in, then."

"Not my turn." The man said gruffly. "It's Al's."

"Is not." The man protested.

"Oh, shut it, the both of you." Lear said. "Follow me." He told the group and began striding through the giant gates.

A rasping breath suddenly echoed through the air. Kat looked around.

"Who made you?" The Crawler asked. "Who crafted such slight flimsy forms? You rip like insect wings in our hands." There was a long, drawn out chuckle. "All that you love will become shadow. All that you see will become death."

Suddenly, Death was standing there, besides Kat, his scythe drawn.

"Aye, that's true enough." He said. "But not today. Back to the darkness with you."

There was another chuckle, but it faded away to nothing. Death turned to Kat.

"Tonight. He might even show up himself."

(Good to hear.)

"Very well." The King muttered once he was done. "Getting to the Necropolis won't take long at all."

Jack nodded, feeling the energy course through him. He'd need to keep a kid on that. He wondered exactly what the King expected to encounter in the Necropolis to warrant something like this.

"Good." Kat nodded. She looked towards the temple entrance as the horn blew. "That will likely be those reinforcements. And in good time as well."

They got to the Folly. Jack could feel the energy. Sparks flew from his fingertips.

"I'm assuming you know how to siphon the magic?" The Queen asked. Jack nodded.

"Take as much as you can handle, then. Don't worry about depleting the reserve. Even the King wouldn't be able to drain it in one go."

Kat looked up at the argument and back down when it was resolved. "On that note, if all went well, the delegation should be coming back soon." She said smoothly. "And as for my patient..." She stood up and walked towards Naomi.

"Are your eyes fine? Any dizziness? Pain?" She asked.

The snow got deeper the further North they headed. The King walked at the front of the group, the snow melting instantly wherever he set his foot. His figure was steaming slightly as snowflakes evaporated on contact. The Queen and Jack followed behind.

Jack knew about Archon's Folly. The structure was a single, circular room with no walls and a domed roof. Thirteen pillars supported it. Inside, it was empty save three large glass spheres set into three of the pillars, surrounded by inscriptions. Not many people today spoke the language, but the inscriptions demanded souls. And, according to the King, there was a ridiculous amount of magic stored there. He shuddered, wondering what the King would be like supercharged on third-party magic.

"Well," Kat began, "there was an attack. The Crawler. So, after your friends fought it off, the Jack and I reached an agreement. He brought the Court here. They helped repair the city and are now gone with Sliuril up North to the Necropolis to try to destroy the source of the Crawler's powers. Glaurug and some of my people have gone south to try to get reinforcements while the others are gone." She said.

"Let's forge on to the Folly, then." Jack said.

He turned and walked out of the town gates. The Court followed.

"Hey!" A guard called. "Hey! You're forgetting your..." he tapered off as the Queen gave him a cheery little wave, holding a dagger. The guard checked the stash to see that the weapons were gone. He decided that that was well above his pay grade and would spend the rest of the night getting extremely drunk in the tavern.

"So. Glyphs, huh?" Jack asked. The King shrugged.

"The Old Kings were many things. Careless was not one of them. They would have wanted to make sure not just anyone could consult the Oracle."

The members of the delegation nodded and quickly got on the horses.

"Well, I was hoping to talk to the Oracle before we went to the Necropolis, but I suppose it doesn't matter all that much. The way I see it, we have two choices. We can continue to the Folly and then the Necropolis, destroy the pendant, retrieve the glyphs and then talk to the Oracle. Or, we can stay here for a while before flooding Plan A." Jack said.

The King shrugged, noncomittal.

"Well, we're a delegation from the city. My name is Cyril. I'm not sure if I'm at liberty to tell you the name of the others."

"No." One on the women said, observing the assembled mass with crossed arms. "You're not."

"We were sent here by the Priestess of Aurora." Cyril continued. "Pleasure to be working with you."

The Court also relinquished their weapons. The Queen had had quite a few knives hidden on her person, but she gave away all of them, to the best of Jack's knowledge. He looked at the town. Guards in blue-grey uniforms were going around, lighting lamps. Large fires blazed in covered sheds to try to give some warmth to the town. There were several people clustered around these, often listening to an elder telling a story. He heard snatches of conversation, boasting of taking on the monsters that dwelled beyond the city walls. There were several stalls, but the wares had been packed away from the night.

To the left and straight ahead lead further into the town, with houses built with heavily sloped roofs. From there came the voices of many people, almost drowning out a steady clink; it was not a blacksmith's place to turn down a customer, whatever the time of dat.

To the right was a large, open circular area. One half of it was raised, with stair leading up. Opposite the raised part were four massive faces carved into the rock: the Snowspire Oracle. The eyes of each face glowed, but dimly, as if dormant.
