"Emerald! Are you okay?" Fortem made sure to speak quietly. He scanned the Riolu, making sure he was alright. It was amazing for him to be able to meet him after weeks of being alone...

"...Hello..." Through all his time here, Audax still didn't feel comfortable beginning a talk with anyone. The awkwardness and stress got to him, and his tail drooped. "How are you doing?"

Quickly, Clamor got out his board and chalk, fitting it over his claw in less than a second. He wrote in sharp lines across his slate, saying 'What can I do to help?' No room for excess words, though he'd say them if he could. He had to be concise. He brought it up to Harringale, standing stoicly.

As soon as Fortem got to his room for his break, he doffed his scarf and bits of armor, slipped on a dark, hooded cloak to obscure his image, and slipped out of the castle. This was one opportunity he just couldn't throw away. Careful to seem calm and confident (as he'd learned to be to sneak in and out of places), he made his way to the fountain, and gave Emerald a tap on the shoulder, smirking.

After some contemplation, Audax stretched and heaved his heavy book bag out into the school of magic hallway. He needed to find something to do, or he thought he'd go insane. Head and ears drooped shyly, he scanned around, spotting a couple pokemon, including Thea the umbreon, his mentor, and an absol he'd never seen before.

Sneakily, Clamor slunk into the base. He was ready to do whatever the group needed, and looked around for someone to converse with.

It was Fortem's turn to guard the edges of the castle. Well, he and a few other knights. He was still relatively new, after all. The fighting along the border had been getting more intense as time went on, and even worse, Fortem hadn't been able to contact his friends for a few weeks. Things had gotten so busy that he hardly had time to rest from his knightly duties, and he began to wonder if it was such a good idea to be here after all. As he marched down the castle borders, fearing another fight, he spotted a small blue figure far off down the road. His step faltered as he turned his head and squinted. It was Emerald! Fortem opened his mouth, but suppressed his voice, not wanting to be seen as a bad knight by the other three pokemon in his group.

Audax's eyes were shut as he inhaled and exhaled, meditating in his room at the school of magic. Though he was improving greatly, able to cast magic much quicker than before, it was harder for him to concentrate with the voice in his head telling him to stay vigilant. He was in loyalist territory after all, and didn't fully believe in their ideals. He sighed, breaking what concentration he had, and flopped onto his bed. Even he, a pokemon who loved to be alone, was feeling a little lonely.

Clamor sprang at his target. Using takedown, he slammed its mass down to the dusty ground, and placed a paw on it, his claws unsheathed. Having access to training dummies was just one good perk of being a republican inside the fate arena. He needed to keep practicing if they were to get their message heard. Finished his training for the day, he grabbed his slate and chalk and placed it on his back, padding back to the entrance of the arena.

Fortem
Show hidden content
Name: Fortem

Age: 17

Gender: Male

Pokemon: Lycanroc

Appearance: He's a lycanroc with navy accents on his face, paws and back, but he changes form depending on the time of day. It's a family trait. His eyes are blue, no matter the form.

Personality: He's actually a little timid, despite his name meaning 'brave' (he finds it ironic). He gets anxious a lot. However, he is respectful, and very thoughtful for those who care about him. If you compliment or insult him, he will never forget. He doesn't like to hurt others, but will if there is no other option. He’s just very peaceful and playful in general, and has grown braver through the help of his friends.

Backstory: He's lived in the castle in luminia all his life. came from a long time of Median Lycanrocs, Lycanrocs who's form changes depending on the time of day. His parents took pride in that, and are both esteemed members of the knights who serve Tempest. They put a lot of pressure on him to do well in battling, when he really didn't want to, out of fear, and also didn't know what he wanted to do with his life.

After falling through the portal to the ground (Below the Clouds RP), Fortem became friends with Emerald and Hiro. He gained a little more confidence with help from his new friends, and he's determined to be a good friend to them. On their journey on the surface (Dreams of our Generation RP), he learned basic water magic from the spirit of Tenko the Lucario and helped save Luminia from ultra beasts.

Since then, Fortem made an effort to explore the city of Luminia as well as a few surrounding islands (Private RP), and has grown very attached to them. He has grown more comfortable with the prospect of battling, and, with encouragement from Dainn, the captain of the knights, has become more interested in becoming a knight. He has also befriended Audax the eevee, and wants to attend the school of magic because of him.

He was recently made a proper (though junior) knight, and he is currently in the castle.

Moveset:
Bite
Rock Throw
Stone Edge
Sand Attack

Other: Fortem knows the splash spell from the anima water magic section, but that’s about it. He does want to learn more, though.

As for where he stands in the revolution, Fortem is more of a loyalist. He doesn’t see anything wrong with the system currently in place and thinks the system of knights is pretty good, but he’s willing to open an ear to those who do. Really, he just wants the fighting to stop, so that Luminia can be safe, and he and his friends can meet up again.

Audax
Show hidden content
Name: Audax

Age: 16

Gender: Male

Pokemon: Eevee

Appearance: He’s an eevee with gray-brown fur, and dark flecks all over his pelt. He has pensive green eyes. He carried a heavy, book-filled bag everywhere.

Personality: He’s very introverted. He’s logical, but also indecisive and takes a long time to make decisions. He doesn’t like taking risks, and he’s relatively shy and quiet. Knowledge drives him, since he thinks that all good things come from knowing.

Backstory: He lived in the suburbs for most of his life. doesn’t like talking about his past much, and that much is a mystery. What he does tell others is that he’s been working at Remus’s party shop for a while, and he’s been training at the school of magic, learning dark magic. He grew up with a lot of books and a lot of time alone, which naturally led to him being a huge bibliophile and knowledge lover.

After Luminia’s ultra beast incident, Audax joined the school of magic, and befriended Fortem and Emerald (Private RP), though he still doesn’t know either too well. He’s still very shy and quiet, and feels awkward in social situations.

When the tension started between the loyalists and republicans, Audax had to make a choice between his job, or his education. After a long time contemplating, he chose the latter, and the school of magic offered him a temporary room at the school to stay at. Seeing him as a loyalist, he doesn’t feel safe entering the anthian district, though he is neutral. He feels bad about not even telling Remus where he went.

Moveset:
Protect
Swift
Takedown
Double Kick

Other: Audax knows the first two dark magic spells. He is neutral to the fighting, and thinks that the government is good mostly, but has some notable flaws, such as the fact that the people don’t get too much of a say, though (most) authorities try to rule justly. He fakes being a loyalist to keep on learning at the school of magic.

Clamor
Show hidden content
Name: Clamor

Age: 18

Gender: Male

Pokemon: Luxio

Appearance: He’s a luxio with a varied pattern, more tufts of fur all over, and piercing amber eyes. He is unable to speak, and he carries a slate and chalk everywhere.

Personality: He’s inventive and extroverted, always finding creative ways to solve problems. He will gladly talk with whoever can find a way to reach him. He’s a ruthless fighter and is able to use his anger at anything to fuel his speedy attacks. He really, really wishes he could speak like most other pokemon do.

Backstory: He lived with his mother in the suburbs since he was a shinx. She was a doctor at Luminia’s hospital, but also crafty and a part time inventor, and Clamor picked up his resourcefulness from her. It was his mother who came up with the idea to give him a slate with chalk to hit over a claw, so he could write out his thoughts.

Throughout his life, Clamor has had a lot of bad run-ins with the Knights of lumina, some of who treated him unfairly or treated him like he was incompetent because he couldn’t speak. He lost respect for them when he almost ended up in jail during one encounter. He hates that he doesn’t have a say in what the government of Luminia does at all.

Things took a turn for the worst when his mother died during the initial destruction of Luminia when it was hit by meteors and attacked by ultra beasts. He had to adjust to living alone and having no one to write to. The one pokemon who understood him best was gone. To make money, Clamor signed up for a job at the school of magic (he has no mana, but he can still help out) doing whatever tasks were needed.

When the revolution started, he immediately went to the arena to declare where he stood with the pokemon there, and has been helping them out, seeing their cause as noble. He quit his job at the school of magic, seeing as the majority of pokemon there didn’t share his opinions.

Moveset:
Thunderwave
Crunch
Discharge
Takedown

Other: As he has no mana, Clamor doesn’t know any magic, though he does know about it from working at the school of magic. He’s firmly republican, and thinks that Luminia’s government is deeply flawed. He’s happy to finally have a way to voice his opinions about the matter.

Chapter 3

Gyrmr and Skall hesitated a moment, looking at their mother with wide eyes. “Keep going!” Risulf shouted once more. “That’s an order from your alpha!” She bared her teeth as if she was smiling through pain, then turned her attention back to the humans and began to fight.

The rockruffs made eye contact, and noticing the uncertainty in fear in each other’s blue eyes, they sprinted off together, trying to ignore the fierce howls behind them. It was scary that they couldn’t distinguish which cries came from the humans and which came from their mother anymore.

After what felt like eons, Skall collapsed under a bush. Gyrmr followed suit, doing the same. The two lay next to each other, just panting and puffing in sync, too tired to think. Eventually, Gyrm struggled up to his feet. “Skall…” There were no words to be said as his sister stood up, dropping the carrots. The stupid, useless carrots that had gotten them here.

Thinking the same thing, they plodded back silently the way they’d came. Both had a sinking feeling in their guts, but they had to know what had happened. Night was falling, splashing the sky with a streak of stars. It was a beautiful scene, but the twins saw none of it. The world felt dark as they walked in a miserable suspense.

The pieces came together slowly. First to arrive were the distant, flickering lights of fires in the human encampment. Then, the far off singing and shouting from the same direction. Finally, they saw it up front: The frosty spot on the ground stained red, the tufts of fur, and an abandoned spear, the tip still coated in blood.

The pair of rockruffs fell to the ground around the scarlet tinted patch of earth, as if they were dead instead. The unfairness of it all hit both of them like a spear. Like the spear that had taken her away. Gyrmr felt tears roll down his muzzle as he covered it with his paws, and he suppressed a howl. His ears were clamped down tightly on his head, and he barely registered the sniffles coming from Skall.

Finally, Gyrmr felt a paw on his shoulder. Halfheartedly, his eyes drifted towards a line, a limb, leading to his sister, wearing an expression painted with a mix of grief, exhaustion, and responsibility. “We have to go.” Skall’s voice was hardly more than a whisper. “The humans might come back.” She gestured towards the sunrise, casting a crimson light over the tundra. It was a colour that both rockruffs wished they would never see again.

As much as Gyrmr would love to stay lying on the permafrost forever, he realised Skall was right. Risulf’s sacrifice meant nothing if he did. Nodding to thank his sibling from dragging him out of the cold, he stared longingly with Skall at the spear and earth once more. Then, slowly, tails touching, the duo stumbled into the dawn.

By chance, Kieran also happened to be wandering near the park. He sat down for a minute, grumpily eating a pear. The school hadn't even bothered to give him payment for the morning... What he'd give to be rich! But he could make do. Suddenly eyeing a figure from across the park, he noticed Melody having a conversation with a man who Kieran deemed as 'rather sus'. Hmm... Just to be careful, Kieran flicked up his canid ears, listening to the conversation from far away.

Kieran obediently exited the building. Knowing this town, the reason of evacuation couldn't just be a simple plumbing accident... but he wasn't keen on finding the monster that had caused it either.

Chapter 2

“Okay, Skall and I will dart in and grab some of the carrots. Gyrmr, you stay here and guard. If any humans notice us, bark. Loudly! Got it?” Risulf quietly ordered the rockruffs, who accepted their roles nervously. As alpha in their odd pack of three, Risulf’s words were commands, so it wasn’t as if they had much of a choice. Still, she was a smart and experienced mother, which calmed Skall and Gyrmr’s nerves, though not completely.

Winter on the tundra was difficult for everyone, and there was no exception for this group of wolf pokemon. Risulf often said that they were lucky to have such few members in their pack, since there were less mouths to feed, but it was really just to improve everyone’s moods.

In truth, there were so few berries around that their pack had resorted to stealing carrots from the nearby human clan. Carrots! The humiliation of it made Gyrmr want to growl. But he knew that it would be his stomach growling instead if they didn’t eat soon.

Risulf hated having to put her pups in this danger too. Sometimes, she regretted leaving her old pack; they would all be far more protected. But there was nothing to do about it now. Putting on a brave front, she nodded at her children, and observed the farm they were going to raid.

“We go when I say,” She instructed Skall. Her icy eyes darted from human to human, until they were all facing away. “Now!” Instantly, their paws were off the ground and flying towards the patch of iceroots a couple bounds away. As they arrived, she grabbed the leaves of one in her jaws and jerked it out of the ground. Despite how dire the situation was, the rush of adrenaline combined with the crisp, frosty air made her feel alive.

Suddenly, a sharp yap reached Skall’s ears. “Their clan is coming!” Gyrmr growled. Sure enough, a handful of humans gripping spears came charging towards the farmland. They wore crude, horned helmets, adding to their intimidation factor. Skall felt her blood run cold. Her paws pounding furiously against the ground, she darted into the woods alongside her twin and mother, praying that the clan of humans wouldn’t follow them.

Unfortunately, this clan was particularly territorial. If they noticed a threat to their power in any way, they wouldn’t just settle on driving it off, they wanted to eliminate it. That was part of what made this mission so risky. Even as the pack loped away, they could hear shouts of fury behind them. And all this for a couple of carrots! Skall looked down at the few she was clutching in her mouth, wondering if it was really worth it.

Despite their armour, the humans were shockingly agile. Slowly but surely, they caught up to the family. Gyrmr wished he had longer legs as the storm of voices behind him grew louder and louder…

All of a sudden, a figure flew over him, casting a long, cold shadow. He turned his head for a moment to see Risulf snarling at the humans, who roared in triumph. She turned her head slightly, and stared at her pups with a determined gaze. “Get out of here!”

"Are you sure?" Kieran asked. "I was at home all night reading." He felt a little guilty lying, but it was better this way... right? He'd be more careful now, and he wouldn't get himself in any more dangerous adventures (he'd look back at this thought later and realize what an absolute lie that was).

Chapter 1

“So there was a young human who lived in Galar. The human-”

“You can’t just start a story like that! You have to start with “Once upon a time”!”

An amused sigh escaped the lycanroc’s muzzle. “Fine, Skall. Once upon a time, when pokemon and humans spoke in the same tongue, there was a young human living in Galar. The human’s clan was at war against pokemon, because of an offense that took place long ago.

“One day, the clan discovered that a gathering of pokemon was happening the next day, and set out to ambush them. Everyone in the clan was given a sword and shield to prepare for the battle. But this human saw no sense in fighting over a forgotten cause. They felt compassion for the pokemon.

“And so, the night before the battle, the human snuck into the woods and warned the all pokemon to stay in their homes the next day. The human offered up their sword and shield as a show of peace, so that the pokemon would believe him. And that’s how the pokemon of Galar were saved from what could have been a fierce battle. There, is that a good enough story for you two?” The lycanroc, Risulf, asked the question to her two rockruffs, a gleam in her eye.

“Thanks, mom,” Gyrmr, one of the pups, responded. “Wow! I think it would be cool to have a weapon like the shield or sword that the human had!”

“We have claws, dummy!” Skall playfully batted a paw at her brother. “And a shield isn’t even a weapon!” “Close enough!” Gyrmr swiped back at her, his paw narrowly missing Skall’s ear. “Settle down! There’s a little more,” Risulf’s stern voice sounded through the den. The rockruff siblings froze mid wrestle, before taking a seat.

“Some say the original sword and shield exist somewhere in Galar. Some explorers are still searching for them, I think.” Rinsulf smiled as the pups’ eyes widened. “Galar’s so big that no one’s discovered them. Some even call the tools the cursed sword and shield, possibly because they’re hard to find, but I’m not sure.”

“Maybe we could find them one day! We could all explore Galar!” Skall exclaimed, as her tail began to wag. “One day,” Risulf promised halfheartedly. “But now you need to sleep. I promised to teach you how to fight tomorrow, and you won’t be able to learn unless you rest up.”

“Fine,” Gyrmr let out a hearty yawn. “Do… do you think there are humans who are nice, like the one in the story?” He asked. “All the other ones you’ve told us about are big and scary!” Risulf thought, an expression of doubt flickering across her face for a fraction of a second.

“...Maybe… but don’t you two get any ideas! Most humans are dangerous and unpredictable. You never know if one is planning to help or hurt you, especially since you can’t talk to them.”

Of course, these warnings couldn’t completely deter the two young rockruffs from being curious, but they nodded anyway. “Good night, then,” Skall mumbled, flopping down to the dusty earth. Gyrmr followed up with his own “Good night”, and the pair of pups dozed off, their dreams filled with images of swords and shields and humans.

Wolves of Galar

Hey everyone, this is just a pokemon fanfiction I'm working on about Zacian and Zamazenta, as you might be able to tell from the title. I'm exploring the idea that the two of them could have started out as Lycanrocs!

I can't guarantee that I'll finish, but I'll do my best to with the motivation I have. I'm hoping to post a couple chapters a week, but we'll see how it goes :)

All I ask is that you don't post in here, please! Giving feedback of any kind at all is also appreciated, thank you!

If you're reading this, I want to thank you so much, and I really hope you enjoy!
