Sure, they’d hung back a little bit, but they weren’t exactly lazy, per say.

No, Connor and Mel were hanging back for no reason other than that they were ‘conserving energy’. And also because Connor and Mel both hated everything about Kanto with a passion and wanted to take as long as physically possible to avoid as much as possible.

“You know, Amaterasu is technically from Kanto.” Connor pointed out idly.

“No, Amat was born in Kalos so he doesn’t count.” Mel insisted, and the cycle continued.

“How come you’re leaving?” Connor asked, hands in his pockets as he stood by the soft gray car. It was a good size too, big enough to fit at least six people, and that didn’t include the trunk. “And why are you driving?”

Mel dropped her backpack into the passenger seat, closing the door after before turning to face Connor. “Got a call. Something about a lab accident in Kalos. I’ve gotta go see what’s going on. And hey,” She grinned. “I’m an excellent driver, thank you very much.”

Which was true. She was a good driver, contrast to popular belief. And her own belief sometimes too.

Riu was on the roof of the car, legs dangling as he waited for them to finish. ”I think you’re doing okay.” He offered. His eyes were free of the bandages for a change, and they still held their spark deep in them. Though they had a slightly ghosted over appearance, but it was vastly unnoticeable unless you truly knew what to look for.

“Thank you, Riu.” Mel said. Connor stuck his tongue out, and Riu let out a soft snort.

The car was loaded up quickly. Mel driving, of course, Aki was in the passenger seat, and Riu, Dew and Amaterasu were in the backseat. The Growlithe already had his head out the window.

Mel pressed her hands onto the steering wheel and sighed. “Just a road trip, Con. We’ll be okay.”

Connor nodded, interlocking his fingers in his pocket.

Mel looked so guilty. “You know you can come if you want.”

“I know.” And he did. He really did. “I’m not ready to go home yet.”

Blue eyes lit up. “You called it ‘home’.”

Connor smiled. “It’s my home too.”

Mel reached out the window to tussle his hair. “Damn right it is.” She said fondly. “How do you plan on getting back?”

“Plane, probably. I want to explore for a bit first.” Connor shrugged. Pom leapt onto the side of the car and reached in with one paw to pat Dew’s head. The Roserade grinned and the two exchanged a knowing smile.

“So, I’ll see you in Kalos?” Mel checked, pulling her hand back into the car. Connor nodded. “‘Kay. See you soon, Con.”

He stepped away from the car, pulled Pom toward him and waved as the car started up and drove off.

”They’re gonna hit something.” Pom said fondly.

And Connor?

Connor just laughed.

Mel huffed playfully and pulled herself up onto the boat. “That’s good. Hey, sometimes I think Mira’s, like, psychically connected to this boat.” She mused, though it was mostly to herself.

Connor, on the other hand, accepted Snow’s hand and scrambled onto the boat. “Yeah, we uh,—“

“Shh, dont say it—“

“— had a run in with a trainer with a Greninja and Pom and Riu fainted so—“

“— We had to ask a centipede for help and he dropped us in a pond.” Connor finished with a flourish.

”Where are you going?” Connor asked, watching the girl throw things around frantically. “You look like you’re in a rush.”

“Yeah, uh..—“ Mel was cut off by Aki bursting through the doorframe, green eyes wide and startled. “Sorry. It’s nothing. What’s up?”

“Mira’s hatching a party for Tiger. Are you.. Are you going?”

“Maybe later.”

Connor frowned. “Why not come with me?”

“Because I’m a mess.” The girl responded simply. And she wasn’t wrong. Both mentally and physically, she was a mess. Her hair was sticking up in different directions, almost like a startled Skitty. And her blue eyes were blown wide and panicked. “Maybe later.”

He accepted her answer and moved on.

“Happy birthday, Tiger.” Connor called over with a small wave and smile, looking up from where he’d been building a castle out of rocks.
