"Nice to meet you, Emmie!" Dee called out cheerfully. "Now if you don't mind, as you can see, I really kinda have to go!" She smiled at the girl, before abruptly running into the distance, dragging eno boy by the hand.

"Come on. We'll circle around and flank'em from behind. Between the two of us, we may be able to do some damage."

"...yeah, well emo cookie, I can see that you believe that. Personally, I like a good interrogation, but that's just me." She shot him a wry smile.

"The name's Dee. Dark Chocolate Daffodil Cookie, if you want to be obnoxious." She held out a hand, a slow and precise movement as not to unnerve the shadow.

"I'm Dee," said Dee, raising an eyebrow at the newcomer. An unorthodox appearance accompanied a frightful smell. It was a good thing the intruder had found her first, and not one of the others. She wasn't afraid, more than able to hold her own in a fight. "Who might you be, stranger?"

And then came the shadows.

"Well that was mean. How sexist, assuming a girl can't fight for herself." She put her hands on her hips, pretending to be mad at the scarf lover. Only holding it for a second, she broke into a smile. "Seriously though, thank you. Nice move."

Moon shook her head mutely. There hadn't been much music on her end either. She had always held a bit of a love for New Orleans style jazz (only because her mother and sister had both hated it), but other than sea shanties, she hadn't been exposed to too much music.

"Big band Jazz is okay, I guess... I don't know. I'm with Lydia, I don't listen to too much music." She blushed, embarrassed about the stupidest of things.

Just shut up! Stop talking and just attack them. As an ambush class cookie, Dee knew what it took to successfully spring a trap on an opponent. This was apparently amateur hour. But maybe it was worth a shot.

She decided to let them speak.

Nanami chuckled as she took the proffered knife, her flirtatious demeanor still in place despite Hotaru's apparent distraction. "Oh, thank you! But I might be hoping for something a little sharper... With a trademark elegant beauty..."

Her words dripped with charm, but there was a slight undercurrent of annoyance beneath the surface. She had been trying to catch Hotaru's attention for a while now, and it seemed that her advances were going unnoticed. It was quite unlike her to be ignored in such a manner, and it was beginning to grate on her nerves.

As she admired the knife for a moment, Nanami couldn't help but think that maybe this would finally pique Hotaru's interest. After all, a debate was a game of words, and she was more than ready to engage in one with the shopkeeper. Maybe then, she would finally get the attention she deserved.

"So, Hotaru," Nanami began, her tone light and teasing, "how much does it cost to win your undivided attention? I'm quite skilled at negotiations, you know. I'm willing to pay a favor for a favor." She winked playfully, her eyes sparkling with mischief as she leaned in slightly, waiting for Hotaru's response.

Still looking into the woman's captivating gaze, Dee pointed to her blowgun, a question in her eyes. She didn't even know anyone's name, and she was already willing to be in there, fighting battles with these strangers. Because even Dee had heard of the Dark enchantress's reign, and knew that her followers were deadly and dangerous. They couldn't be allowed to take any more ground. It didn't matter if they retaliated or punished her, Dee did not like bullies.

"We'll be quiet, Doctor Elodie. I-I'm really sorry." She didn't want to get either of them in trouble. And Moon already knew the threat of never seeing Lydia again...

Well.

If someone wanted to manipulate her, that was the key right there.

Dee was curious about the quakingly loud noise, because of course she was. The one who was mumbling about scarves and darkness had disappeared, leaving her with the gingerbread witch and another talkative cookie.

But...

There were other voices, a pair of cookies, sneaking through the woods. Except they were loud and clumsy. Dee put a finger to her lips, and crept behind the corner of the house as to be angled out of sight. Her blowgun was in her hand, a dart perfectly positioned.

She signaled briefly to the cottage cookie, as if to ask who the intruders were.

Then the other one shouted "Leave," and any semblance of the element of surprise vanished. Crap.

"Thank you," Matty whispered, her voice still tinged with uncertainty. She wanted to believe Calmia's reassurance, to let herself be comforted by the idea that she wouldn't mess things up. But the fear of misinterpreting her feelings and causing harm still lingered.

As Calmia's fingers continued to trace soothing patterns through her hair, Matty closed her eyes for a moment, allowing herself to bask in the gentle contact. The warmth of Calmia's presence was oddly reassuring, a stark contrast to the chaos within her mind.

"I just... I want to make sure," Matty began, her voice soft but earnest. "I want to make sure you're comfortable with... whatever this is. I don't want to push you into something that might not be right."

She opened her eyes, meeting Calmia's gaze with a mixture of hope and trepidation. Her heart was pounding, and she felt like she was standing on the edge of a precipice, unsure of whether to take the leap or step back.

"Ghosts may not be able to give, but they can be exorcised. Bliss has already threatened to do it to you." Moon's eyes were wide, full of worry. "I don't... I don't want to lose you so soon."

"...well most of it is out of my control. I'm not responsible for much of my life anymore, as a dog isn't much responsibile either." It was a nonchalant response.

"Geez, okay, okay. I'll be more careful. And for what it's worth, I do want you to stay. I just also don't want you to die either." Moon sighed, facing Lydia, hurt and sadness evident in her eyes. "You're basically my best friend, and I haven't even seen you for a full 24 hours. What does that say about me?"

"I don't know." She said, starting to get annoyed now. "I asked you to visit me despite the danger. You came. I appreciate that, but I'm still concerned for your safety. If there's anything else, I'm not a mind reader like you. You'll have to tell me." Moon turned away from Lydia. Having people angry at her was a very familiar occurrence, but it still hurt.

"...if you can read my thoughts, then you know I can't oppose Bliss. She is too powerful for me to stand against. The things I've seen her do... anyway, I can build, and I am building. A project that plays to my strengths. I'm using my innovation and trying to find somewhere I fit in. I don't want to be nothing. But right now, I'm not much. The facts are facts." She was still infuriatingly calm. "And I'm selfish. I don't want you to leave. But I do still assert the point that it's safer for you away from the mansion."

"Fine. Kill yourself and her both. I can find myself another fun little host once another deal goes sour." Not-Jack crossed its legs, suspending itself in middair. It was still alluringly beautiful, until one looked closer and saw the shadowy skin and out of place facial features.

"...Lydia, I can't escape. What do you want me to do?" She was so much calmer when she was taking to another person. When her own inner narrator said the same things, they hurt far more. "Again, this was a decision I made to save you and Iteral. You are both tied to people you care about. I knew no one and nothing in this world. Besides, it hasn't been all bad here. Bliss has been kind to me. You can see that Elodie had been kind to me, despite it not being in her best interests. You also cannot say that I'm wasting my life. A measure of fulfillment is relative, and you cannot pass judgement on me without first walking in my shoes. You have not done that. You clearly think differently than me and seen uncompromising at the moment. I can understand where you're coming from, though."

She paused, staring off into space.

"You're very emotionally driven, aren't you?" It wasn't quite a question, not was it a judgement. Moon was impassive in her delivery, giving nothing away.

"Hmm. I don't think I truly realized that you were a displacedish soul. I guess I won't protect you then. Makes my life a little easier. Perhaps I'll have to redo some of my calculations... But it's still not worth it for Elodie to risk the social capital she's built with Bliss to build social capital with me. Bliss has infinitely more power and control. I don't want to die, Lydia. Sometimes I think it might be easier... But that's a whole other issue. I can just see things from a multiple points of view."

Her objectivity allowed her to see the truth. She was a speck of dust on an infinitly fathomless world. She was worlds away from home, out of her league and trapped. Moon wasn't worth it, Moon wasn't enough. Why would Lydia pretend otherwise? And her brother was a university professor; she was supposed to be smart, too. Dying didn't kill braincells, did it?

"Oh, I've heard. Don't worry, Mademoiselle. If anything, it just needs a visit more than anywhere else in these parts; a little love, care and order would do Floraberry a world of good. And I've travelled from beyond Teahaven just to see it!" She smiled angelically, sure of her words and convictions. Her eyes were earnest despite the change in tone. Dee slid a hand inside her pocket, shifting her weight slightly.

"Yes, I'm a person too. But it makes no sense for Elodie to help someone as transient and temporary as me. Incurring Bliss's wrath isn't worth granting me an extra few hours of freedom. It isn't in Elodie's best interests to do that. Same for you: you have been lucky, but it isn't worth it for you to risk capture or death just to see me. You need to stay safe and keep those you care about out of harm's way. There would only be so much I could do to protect you..."

Moon trailed off, thinking of all the concessions she would need to make, of all the favors she would need to offer Bliss in exchange for Lydia's life if she were to be caught. It was not a pretty thought. Yet Lydia had far more going for her than Moon did. Moon was already bound, if not literally at the moment, than figuratively by her word. Lydia had made no such mistake. The choice was easy. This was logic. This was what Moon accepted at. That didn't stop her selfish desires of wanting people to care about her, of wanting people to put her first. She just understood all too well she couldn't expect to people to go against their own best interests to help her. And her interests rarely aligned with anyone else's, it seemed.

She had thanked Iroha, she had read the pages, she had eaten a few bites, and had blown out the fire.

And of course, she had signed the contract without a moment's hesitation.

This time, she was playing for more than just a game; this time she had the opportunity to help an island.

Tossing and turning on her makeshift cot, her thoughts drifted. She had decided not to explore the castle in the dark, and remained in the shores.

The book. The book contained nothing but the ridiculous effing rules, the crap that Paiyoon had already figured out. There was nothing about authors and archangels, Alice or Kojirou. Fate controlled these games, because the participants appeared to selected at random. There was nothing about reincarnation or wings, not a mention about getting stuck in endless loops or how to get out. Paiyoon sighed. The real information would be gleaned from among the numbers of who had held this book before her.

Who was the original author?

Why had they written the book?

What was their original timeline?

Why did they believe that in the absence of war, there was nothing but obscurity?

All Paiyoon knew was whoever was behind this, whoever was selecting the roles and pulling the strings, had screwed her over five times. She had never held a knife, she had never been able to kill. This goblin had had to rely on her wits and her words. Of the four games completed, she had risen to the occasion three times. Her first game was a tragedy, ever so preventable in hindsight.

She steepled her fingers, sitting across legged, entering into a deep meditation, reminiscent of sleep.
